Top Cat Begins Trailer – The cool feline returns with his own CGI animated origin story

March 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

top-cat-begins-slideI think it’s safe to safe having watched the trailer for Top Cat Begins, that the digital artists at the likes of Pixar, Dreamworks Animation, Illumination and Blu Sky aren’t going to be worried that the makers of this new movie are going to blow them out of the water with the quality of their CGI. In fact all the background characters look oddly like zombies.

However, that doesn’t mean the kids won’t like this new take on the classic 1960s cartoon, and it’s a step up from the odd part CG, part hand-drawn world of 2011’s Top Cat: The Movie. It might also be a surprise that both these recent Top Cat movies are actually Mexican production.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tracing the roots of the famous animated series from cartoon legends Hanna-Barbera, get set for this ‘purrfect’ feature adventure that tells the ‘tail’ of how our hero, T.C. created his infamous, Manhattan alley cats gang. Poor, lonely and living on the streets, Top Cat is one sad cat, until a chance meeting with Benny, a naive and good-hearted cat looking for adventure. The pair quickly become best buddies – and partners in crime – pick pocketing their way out of poverty and quickly believing they are the real cats’ whiskers! Setting their sights higher, they decide to steal from Mr. Big, a mysterious diamond-stealing henchman who rules New York’s backstreets. As Top Cat and Benny hatch a plan to take the diamonds for themselves, little do they know, success is just the start of their problems. Along the way, our heroes meet fellow alley cats Choo Choo, Fancy-Fancy and Brain, and together they’re a formidable bunch. However, when Mr. Big catches up with them and captures Top Cat, can his new friends save the day?

‘Staring Jason Harris (Top Cat: The Movie, Rio 2), David Hoffman (Bridesmaids) and Chris Edgerly (Happy Feet, The Simpsons) and director Andres Couturier, TOP CAT comes to UK cinemas May 27.’

RainBRO Film About Homophobe Sent To Gay Conversion Camp Seeks Funding

March 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rainbro-slideIt’s time for another crowdfunded movie campaign, this time for RainBRO, which is seeking $50,000 cover all the pre-production costs and hopefully convice financiers to take a chance of the movie. And if you do help out, you could even get some RainBRO underwear!

The movie is about a homophobic high school bully, who is ‘accidentally sent to a gay reform summer camp, he must find a way to escape before his bad boy reputation is ruined forever. On his hilarious, yet heartfelt journey, he meets a diverse host of characters that ultimately challenge the way he sees the world, and himself.’

The makers add that, they see RainBRO as, “a coming-of-age teen comedy that highlights important issues that everyone – straight and gay alike – deals with, while embracing a heartfelt message of love, acceptance, and tolerance. With kids and teens still struggling to find a way out of the metaphorical closet, a movie like this needs to be made! The true power of this movie comes from showcasing an array of characters from different walks of life. Being cognizant of how gay people are often portrayed in the media, we as filmmakers also felt it was time to redefine the stereotypes behind the so-called “sissy” character and put an end to the notion that feminine qualities in a boy are a negative trait. In the film, our protagonist learns that sexuality is only a small aspect of who you are and that it doesn’t define you…

“Our mission is to have audiences walking away with a sense of optimism and hope that inspires change in today’s social climate. With the right mindset and by creating a meaningful dialogue, it can get better. While society has improved and made significant strides, there are still deeply closeted teens that could benefit from a film like this, as could their straight counterparts. Help us be an ally for human rights by supporting the next great teen comedy!”

A self-described ‘funny movie about a very unfunny subject’, the crowdfunding campaign is open now, so take a look at the trailer below, and if you want to help out, head over to Indiegogo. [Read more…]

Mark Hamill Says ‘Of Course’ Luke Skywalker Might Be Gay

March 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

luke-skywalkerWhile there’s been a lot of comment about whether Finn and Poe Dameron might end up being the Star Wars movie’s first gay couple (based on their bromance in The Force Awakens), it’s not really been mentioned that the franchise could have had a gay character long before that – Luke Skywalker. Although he was shown having some interest in Leia, before he found out she was his sister, he never really had a romance of his own, and seemed as interested in men as women.

So is he gay? Well, The Sun asked the actor who plays him, Mark Hamill, that question in the light of the fact JJ Abrams has recently said he expects there to be LGBT characters in the films in the future. Hamill says, “But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out’.

“They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

It’s a great way to look at it, as Luke was always designed to be an archetypal hero – someone who comes from a humble background and must work to find their destiny – and who the audience is supposed to relate to. In the past in the movies, relating to him would automatically mean he was straight, but it’s good we’ve moved past that.

However, it’s easily possible Luke isn’t completely gay, as many believe he is Rey’s father, and in books and comics he was given a wife and child (although the new movies are mainly ignoring those). We’ll have to wait and see if his sexuality is further defined in future movies.

21 Jump Street/Men in Black Crossover Gets Director James Bobin

March 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-bobin

When Channing Tatum came up with the idea for a crossover between 21 Jump Street and Men In Black, it seemed like the sort of crazy thing where a studio would do some work on it, just to keep the star happy. However, it appears Sony is taking it very seriously, as Variety reports that Muppets and Flight On The Conchords director James Bobin is in talks to helm the movie.

While Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both expected to be involved, don’t expect to see Tommy Lee Jones or Will Smith, as the makers are apparently looking for ‘younger, fresher faces’ to put on the black suits and help keep the fact aliens are living amongst us a secret. There’s no other info than that, and we’ll have to wait and see how Schmidt and Jenko get caught up in alien shenanigans, and whether the movie will see them going undercover to deal with some sort of sci-fi nasty.

Expect to hear more info soo though, as Sony is hoping to shoot the movie this summer. It appears that once they’ve tied down Bobin, they’ll be looking for actors to play the new Men (and possibly Women) in Black. Who knows, perhaps after the lacklustre Men In Black 3, this could be a good way to revive the franchise.

Take A Look At The New Power Rangers Line-Up With The First Official Pic

March 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Power-Rangers-movie-pic1

Yep, the Power Rangers are coming (back) to the big screen, this time with a bigger budget and presumably fewer people in robot and monster costumes, or CGI that looks like it was made on a Commodore 64. The movie version has just started shooting, and to give us a look at the new lineup of heroes, the first official pic has been released.

They’re not in costume, but the pic via EW shows us, R.J. Cyler as Billy (the Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott as Kimberly (the Pink Ranger), Ludi Lin as Zack (the Black Ranger), Becky G as Trini (the Yellow Ranger), and Dacre Montgomery as Jason (the Red Ranger).

It appears having a multi-ethnic team was important to them, with Dean Israelite telling EW, “From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process. We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”

He’s also excited about having Elizabeth Banks involved, saying, “It’s very exciting that we got [Banks], and I think what she loves is the opportunity to really embrace the insanity and deliciousness of Rita Repulsa in terms of how weird and wonderful that character was, and really dive into and consume that character. You should always be off-balance when you’re watching her. Is she insane? Is she totally calculated? Does she know what she’s doing? Elizabeth can toe that line really well.”

The film is due out March 2017.

Will Smith & David Ayer Reuniting For Max Landis’ Fantasy Bright

March 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith

Will Smith and director David Ayer must have decided they liked working together on Suicide Squad, as Variety reports they’re thinking about getting together again for Bright, based on a script by Max Landis. It doesn’t look like any deals with Smith have been signed yet, but he is interested.

However, it appears Ayer is more committed, as Landis recently tweeted about Ayer rewriting his spec cript for Bright, saying, ‘David Ayer translating a whole script of mine into Ayer-sian is a huge, bizarre honor. Like reading the same script from an alternate dimension.’

There’s not a vast amount of detail known about the script, but it’s suggested that it will be somewhat similar in tone to David Ayer’s End Of Watch, but set in a world where the likes of Orcs and fairies live alongside human. As both End Of Watch and Landis’ Chronicle went down the found footage route, there’s a decent chance this will do the same.

While Smith and Ayer are expected to make a sequel to Suicide Squad, that’s not due to start shooting until 2017, with the hope they can fit in Bright this year.

Ghostbusters Trailer – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig & co. are out to beat the spooks

March 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ghostbusters-2016-slideEver since it was announced that Sony was reviving the Ghostbusters franchise with a new, all-female team, there have been some grumblers out there saying it shouldn’t have been done. However, now the first proper trailer is here, which gives us our first proper look at the movie. While slightly different in tone to the original, it does look like it’ll be a lot of fun.

This time around the people fighting the ghosts are Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Previous reports have suggested that the film would be set in a parallel universe where the events of the earlier movies never happened, but the trailer suggests that’s not true, although it doesn’t full explain why the actors from the original movies, such as Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts, will be in the film but apparently playing different characters (it’s also notable that they were left out of the trailer).

Other new faces include Charles Dance, Michael Kenneth Williams and Chris Hemsworth (who’ll be the women’s hunky secretary. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) directs, with a July release set. Take a look at the trailer below.

Eddie Redmayne Speaks Out For LGBT Youth Following Visit To Youth Center

March 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

eddie-redmayne-psaWhile in LA for the Oscars, Eddie Redmayne took time out to head the Los Angeles LGBT Youth Center, where he met some of the users of the service – something he’s described as shocking, such as learning that 40% of Los Angeles’s homeless youth are LGBT. He also took the time while there to record a video in order to help raise some funds.

Redmayne of course played Lile Elbe in The Danish Girl, about one of the first people to undergo gender confirmation surgery. Following a few comments that raised eyebrows – such as his suggestion that his movie had single-handedly thrust transgender issues into the limelight – it appears he decided to go and see what the real issues are for himself.

The LA LGBT Youth Center is the only place in the city to offer 24/7 support to young LGBT people, including housing and other services. It relies on the public for support, so if you want to help out, head to http://www.lalgbtcenter.org/donate. Take a look at Eddie PSA below.

New Finding Dory Trailer – Ellen Degeneres’ forgetful fish gets her own adventure

March 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Finding-Dory-slideWe’ve had a couple fo brief looks at Pixar’s return to the sea for Finding Dory, but it’s only now that we’ve got a proper trailer, which gives us a good look at the movie, with Ellen Degeneres’ forgetful fish finding out about her past.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory” reunites everyone’s favourite forgetful blue tang, Dory, with her friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?’

It certainly looks like it might recapture the magic that made Finding Nemo the highest grossing animated film ever at the time of its release. The movie will be in cinemas this summer.

Sam Smith Apologises to Dustin Lance Black Over Oscars Speech (While Black Says His Tweet Was Meant To Be Funny)

March 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

sam-smith-oscarsIf only when he was winning, Sam Smith had said he was an openly gay man and proud to be part of the LGBT community, and left it at that. However, his mistaken contention that no openly gay person had ever won an Oscar (plenty have, but no openly gay actor has) resulted in anger, ridicule and a lot of people wincing at his faux pas.

He caused some more wincing later in the night when he was told he wasn’t the first openly gay man to win and Oscar, as people like The Little Mermaid lyricist Howard Ashman had gone before him. Not knowing who Ashman was, Smith joked, ‘I should know him. We should date.’ Unfortunately Ashman died of complications from AIDS in 1991, shortly before he won a second Oscar for Beauty And The Beast.

Smith’s Oscar speech also caused a reaction from Dustin Lance Black, boyfriend of Tom Daley and an Oscar winner for his screenplay for Milk, who tweeted, ‘Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.’

People weren’t sure whether Black was really annoyed, being sarcastic, whether he was jealous about Smith and Daley’s friendship, or if he was genuinely annoyed that someone he appears to know personally forgot that he’d won an Oscar. However, it quickly seems Black wasn’t too angry, as the next morning Smith tweeted, ‘Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack I’ll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x’

Black replied, ‘@samsmithworld Congratulations. Drink water. Rest. But do check out some of the other Gay Oscar work out there. Some truly wonderful stuff.’

Smith also attempted to put his Oscar speech in context, tweeting, ‘Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn’t my point… My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly.’

But was Black initial Tweet serious at the time he posted it? He’s now tried to set the record straight, tweeting, ‘Well this has proven to be a lively day on Twitter. From humor to anger. The former my intent… in defense of history. Much love to all… Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh.’

The words ‘storm in a teacup’ spring to mind, but it certainly would have been good if Smith could have done a little more research before his speech.
