Gay Short Film Showcase: Dog Meet Goose – A meeting between a teen and an older man gets ever more morally complex

March 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dog-meet-goose-short-filmI was all ready to dislike Dog Meet Goose, partly because it has a daft name and partly because it opens with the rather pretentious text, ‘The following presentation was designed as a cinematic experience. Please consider dimming lights, using the best available sound, and watching in full screen’.

When a film gets passive-aggressive before it’s even started (although I’m sure the filmmakers didn’t view it that way), it doesn’t give the viewer much hope.

However the short itself surprises with some great characters and interesting ideas.

The brief synopsis says: ‘A troubled teen seeks help from his neighbor who has a secret.’

The teen knows that there are rumours and speculation about the older man, who’s on ‘the list’ and most people think he should therefore be avoided. The man is initially reluctant to have the teen around, knowing what people will say, but the younger guy says he needs someone to talk to, and as they do, they both reveal more about themselves and the picture gets ever more complex.

It’s an edgy film that sits on the cusp between what is acceptable and what isn’t, as well those things which are legal and aren’t, and whether those things always make perfect sense in the arena of sexuality. Some will find it somewhat disturbing, partly because its about a young man and a much older gent, and partly because it’s the younger person ‘grooming’ the older one in a way that gets to the edge of being a ephebophile’s (someone attracted to teenagers) fantasy.

Indeed overall Dog Meet Goose is difficult one that sits on the cusp of morality, not making judgements but asking a lot of questions of the audience, even if it goes a little over the top at the end. You can watch the full short film below.

Crush Of The Day: Mark Paul Gosselaar Gets Naked With A Friend

March 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-paul-grosselar-crossfitQuick, someone shout ‘no homo’! In the last few days Paul Paul Gosselaar has been proving that while he left Zach Morris behind a long time ago he’s still keeping fit and looking buff with the odd but pretty hot pic below.

He  tweeted the image along with the message ‘Teaming up with @Piketoon for the @CACrossFit #pairpower competition. @CrossFit. Some would say we’ve already won.’

Gosselaar and Ben Ceccarelli actually look like they’re preparing for something other than fitness, although it would be something that would make them sweat.

Whatever the hell is going on, the 41-year-old Franklin & Bash is certainly looking good. Oh, and if he wants to release a version without black bars, we’d certainly be pleased to take a look (and we have to say, we think the length of those bars is unbelievably boastful). [Read more…]

Queer As Film at National Student Pride Offered A Great Evening Of Gay Short Film Entertainment

March 9, 2015 By Scott Elliott 1 Comment

queer-as-film-student-prideIrreverent LGBT film mini-festival Queer As Film made its long-awaited return last weekend, in partnership with National Student Pride, with a special showing and party at the Departure Lounge in London’s Heaven nightclub.

Tickets sold out well in advance but the room felt neither cramped nor overcrowded, with a full bar open between films. As usual, resident Queer As Film compere Tom Allen tickled the audience’s collective funnybone with wry observations and witty comments between each short film, and chaired the Q&A sessions with each of the filmmakers, offering prizes of DVDs (“From the cover, I’d say it’s the story to two boys who couldn’t afford shirts”) to the audience as rewards for the best questions. Effortlessly riffing off of elements in each of the shorts as we watched them, it’s obvious that Allen’s talents with witty one-liners is one of the things that helps Queer As Film set itself apart from the more serious and stuffy film festivals.

Another, of course, is the films it shows. And as always, Queer As Film delivered on that front, too.

First up was A Little Bit Country, directed by Amy Coop, starting the night off with a fun, light-hearted twist on the traditional coming out story, swapping out being gay for something far more shameful: Being a Country Music fan.

As a contrast the second short, Brink by David Hastings, tells a short, sharp story of a homophobic attack that is brutally and graphic in equal measure.

Cupcakes, by students from Sawston Village College, lifted spirits once again, with a joyful and touching exploration of different sexualities and baked goods. Written, directed and starring a group of teenage college students, the raw talent shown in this short was for me the highlight of an already high calibre evening.

Translucent was the only documentary addition to the event’s lineup, telling the story of Director Emily Steele’s sister Diana coming out as Transgender. Sweet without being cloying, a family discussion about love, change and intimacy is interspersed with home videos to create a poignant, touching and incredibly intimate portrait.

Denis Thierault’s I Am Syd Stone added some international flavour to the evening, telling the story of a Hollywood star returning to his small-town home with the intention of rekindling a clandestine relationship with his former lover. An accomplished, tense and slightly sexy exploration of public persona versus personality in celebrity culture as well as everyday life, it’s not difficult to see why this short was included on Pecadillo Pictures’ Boys On Film anthology.

Rounding off the selection for the evening was OUT, by Gus Lopez, another coming out story with a twist – this time a flamboyant mother struggles to come to terms with her son’s sexuality and the affect it might have on her life in a small country village. Heartwarming, hilarious and wonderfully silly.

As a long-time fan of the series, this collaboration with National Student Pride was a welcome return to form for the Queer As Film team, and hopefully means they will once more be making regular appearances on London’s indie film scene. In the meantime, their regular podcast, Gobbing Off, is available to download from iTunes.

Teaser Short Film Trailer – Looking at drug addiction in the LGBT community

March 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

teaser-adam-jonesThere is all sorts of work going on in the world of LGBT-themed cinema, from films that desperately want to be commercial to those that are always going to struggle to find a wide audience due their avant garde nature.

Adam Jones’ Teaser definitely skews towards that end of the spectrum. As he told us, ‘I’m a student filmmaker [making] a video project on gay men & the drug scene, a great story of recovery.

‘The short film starts shooting next month. The story is based on my story and recovery with drug use, we are shooting in a super 8 style to bring the daily issue to a whole new level cinematically. The teaser has shots of old cell phone footage of drug use, but a strong 2 min visual of imagery and symbolism. The story begins at Azure Acres Treatment where a young man’s recovery takes place.

‘I’m looking forward to present the short film in April at a live screening.’

He adds, ‘As the film begins at Azure Acres treatment center (Napa,CA), we go back in time to a year before entering treatment. Not only capturing every detail of how meth was introduced into the young man’s life, we are showing the actual steps he took to the road of destruction through dream sequences & cinematic clips pieced together into a story.’

The teaser for the film below certainly suggest this isn’t going to be an easy movie, but it could be a very intriguing one with its use of montage, contrasting images of gay life with drug imagery. Take a look. [Read more…]

Hugh Jackman Shares Our First Look At Taron Egerton In Eddie The Eagle Flick

March 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

taron-egerton-hugh-jackman-eddie-the-eagleIf you’re British and remember the 1980s you’ll know exactly who Eddie The Eagle is, and considering its the sort of underdog tale us Brits seems to love, it’s almost surprising it’s taken this long for someone to make a biopic about him.

Now it’s happening though and we have proof, as Hugh Jackman’s Twitter has shared an image of him and Taron Egerton taken on the first day of filming.

Hugh Jackman is set to play Chuck Berghorn, a Lake Placid ski jumping expert who helps a young, unlikely Brit called Eddie train for the Calgary Olympics in 1988. Nicknamed Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, he became Britain’s first ever Olympic ski jumper in Olympic history, becoming a media sensation even though everyone knew he had no chance of winning.

Part of his appeal is that he came across as a very nerdy, normal kind of guy, who had a dream and got far further with it than anyone ever imagined.

Dexter Fletcher is directing.

Tomorrowland Trailer – Plus a poster for Disney’s George Clooney starring sci-fi

March 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tomorrowland-poster1Disney is betting big this summer of Tomorrowland (or as they now seem to be trying to call it, Tomorrow Land – A World Beyond) as they’re hoping that it won’t just make a load of money at the box office, but could become a franchise and even help spearhead the rejuvenation of the Tomorrowland section of the Disney theme parks.

And we have to admit, it does look kind of cool.

Now a full trailer has arrived so we can get a better look at the George Clooney starrer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird’s riveting, mystery adventure “Tomorrowland – A World Beyond,” starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

‘Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland – A World Beyond” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.

‘The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson.

“Tomorrowland – A World Beyond” is produced by Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird and Jeffrey Chernov and directed by Brad Bird, with John Walker, Brigham Taylor, Jeff Jensen and Bernard Bellew serving as executive producers. “Tomorrowland – A World Beyond” comes to UK cinemas May 22nd 2015.’ [Read more…]

Kissing Darkness (DVD Review)

March 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sean Paul Lockkart, Ronnie Kroell, Kyle Blitch
Director: James Townsend
Running Time: 87 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 9th 2015 (UK)

Vampires have always been a little bit gay, but Kissing Darkness wants to take that further with a film that comes across as if Twilight had been made in the style of a gay porn movie – except without the hardcore sex.

A group of gay friends (plus a token straight guy) head off for a weekend at a remote cabin. However their fun time isn’t just spoiled by tensions amongst them, but by a strange spirit they awaken after messing with a Ouija board. The ‘witch’ seems to have a problem with the gays, and works her way through the group, turning them into bloodthirsty vampires who do her bidding. [Read more…]

The Imitation Game (Blu-ray Review)

March 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance
Director: Morten Tyldum
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 9th 2015 (UK)

Despite eight Oscar nominations The Imitation Game only walked away with one award, Best Adapted Screenplay. To be honest that wasn’t a shock, as quite a few Oscar watchers had thought it would get nothing. And there are also some, including myself, wondering if the one Academy Award it did win was the right one.

The movie tells the story of Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), a socially awkward, somewhat irascible mathematics prodigy who, after the Second World War breaks out, applies to the government to help break the infamous Enigma code, something many believe is impossible. However he doesn’t want to continue with the traditional method of codebreaking, where smart men use pens, paper and just their brains, as he has an idea to use a machine to break down and then check the billions of possible combinations until it finds the right one. If he can do it, it will allow the Allies to read the German military’s secret communications and possibly win the war. [Read more…]

Continuum (DVD Review)

March 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Haley Joel Osment, Gillian Anderson, Victor Garber, Rufus Sewell
Director: Richiw Mehta
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 9th 2015 (UK)

You have to admire sci-fi that really wants to be intelligent, even if it’s not actually as smart as it thinks it is. That’s certainly true of Continuum (known as I’ll Follow Your Down in the US), which wants to bring together time-travel, wormholes and quantum theory to create a tale that considers the idea of what it would mean to change your past so that your present never happened. However it’s not really that smart and seems to ignore many of the most important implications of what it’s talking about.

Gabe (Rufus Sewell) heads off on a business trip but never returns, leaving his wife (Gillian Anderson) and young son Errol with no clues as to what happened to him – he never checked out of his hotel and has completely disappeared. 12 years later his wife still hasn’t gotten over what happened, while the massively intelligent Errol (now grown up to be Haley Joel Osment) is trying to make his way in the world as a young adult.
