Apropos Of Nothing: The Royal Marines Go Commando (Literally) For Charity

April 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

go-commando-pic5I live just a few miles from where the Royal Marine Commandos train up their new recruits, and having seen these pictures I think I might have to spend more time hanging around the barracks!

In the last day or two  the 2014 Go Commando charity calendar has gone viral, and we can see why. Yes it’s April, but we’re talking naked military men with the cash going to they Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, which helps military families in times of need – so go buy one now.

According to the blurb, ‘2014 celebrates RM350, the 350th birthday of the Royal Marine Corps, so we have opened up the gates to all serving Royal Marines and with the help of our brilliant photographers, have captured some amazing shots of our lads from far and wide and mainly showing the different elements of their job.’

And if you’re wondering if all Marines look like this – I’ve seen them around town on a night out, and they’re all built like muscular bricks! [Read more…]

April 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zachary-quinto-shirtless-selfieZachary Quinto is heading off to shoot the new movie Agent 47 soon, and it appears that in preparation he’s been hitting the gym to get his torso nice and buff.

To show is just how hot he’s looking, he’s posted a new shirtless selfie on Instagram.

And if you’re in the same city as the openly gay actor, you’ll have to keep an eye out for the pic on Grindr, as he’s reportedly now single (and we’re certain he’d be trawling hookup apps if he is).

It’s a great pic, so feast your eyes on it above. Ageny 47 will be in cinemas next year.

The Fault In Our Stars Extended Trailer – High drama and romance for Shailene Woodley & Ansel Elgort

April 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Adaptations of young adult novels are very popular at the moment, but the ones that have generated the most interest have generally been sci-fi and fantasy property.

However there’s a lot of buzz building around The Fault In Our Stars, not least because John Green’s novel has a huge amount of fans. Now an extended trailer has arrived to give us a better look.

The movie follows Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley), a teenager who joins a support group after being diagnosed with cancer. Hazel begins to fall for another cancer-stricken teenager Augustus (Ansel Elgort) from her group. Sam Trammell and Laura Dern play Hazel’s father and mother, with Nat Wolff as Isaac, Augustus’ best friend.

Zack Snyder Confirmed To Direct Justice League

April 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zack-snyder-slideThere’s been a presumption that the planned Batman Vs. Superman movie will lead to a Justice League film. However until now Warner has officially confirmed that. Now though they’ve not just said it’s going to happen, they’ve announced Zack Snyder will direct.

Batman Vs. Superman begins production next month, and there’s some suggestion that Justice League will shoot back to back with that movie, although that’s not been confirmed.

It appears if they’re shooting separately we’ll get Justice League in 2018, but if it’s back to back it’ll be 2017.

Specific plot or casting details have not been revealed, but it is almost certain that Henry Cavill will return as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonderwoman. Ray Fisher is expected to make a cameo in Batman Vs. Superman as Cyborg and then appear in Justice League.

There’s no confirmation on what other DC superheroes might appear in the movie.

American Hustle (Blu-ray)

April 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner
Director: David O. Russell
Running Time: 139 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 28th 2014

American Hustle recently joined a select band of movies to get 10 Oscar nominations but not win a single award (although The Turning Point and Color Purple still hold the record with 11 noms and no wins). However the fact a film like this got 10 nods is a pretty impressive achievement on its own.

Christian Bale is Irving Rosenfeld, a small time hustler who finds his con man empire growing when he teams up with the smart and beautiful Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). However things look like they’re going south after the FBI’s Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) fingers them. [Read more…]

Nymphomaniac – Volumes 1&2 (DVD)

April 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Shia Labeouf, Jamie Bell, Mia Goth
Director: Lars Von Trier
Running Time: 232 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: April 28th 2014

This is the Gone With The Wind of movies with ‘real’ sex in them, at least in terms of the fact that Nymphomaniac has roughly the same running time.

As you may have guessed though, in most ways they’re very different movies – in Gone With The Wind Scarlett O’Hara vows never to hungry again, while in Nymphomaniac Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) vows never to go without sex again. [Read more…]

All Is Lost (DVD)

April 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Robert Redford
Director: J.C. Chandor
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 28th 2014

All Is Lost is a movie where you can imagine two people sitting down to watch it, with one deciding it’s a transcendent masterpiece, while the other thinks it’s a pointless, crushing bore.

These days Robert Redford makes comparatively few movies, but here the 77-year-old doesn’t just take centre-stage, he’s the only person who appears on-screen throughout the running time. Not only that, but he has virtually no dialogue either.

Hell, he doesn’t even have a name. [Read more…]

The King and the Mockingbird (Le Roi et l’Oisieu) (DVD)

April 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jean Martin, Pascal Mazzotti, Raymond Bussieres
Director: Paul Grimault
Running Time: 83 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: April 28th 2014

You could easily be forgiven for having never heard of the 1980 animated French movie The King and the Mockingbird. However it’s had a profound effect, not least that Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata have said it helped show them what animation could be, with the lessons they learned from it helping fuel the creation of Studio Ghibli.

Director Paul Grimault and screenwriter/poet Jacques Prevert started work on the film in 1947, when it was planned it as France’s first animated movie. However production was stopped partway through due to a dispute (an unfinished version that wasn’t approved by the director or writer was released at the time). After endless funding and rights battles it took another 30 years to finish it in the way Grimault and Prevert envisioned it. However it was worth the wait. [Read more…]

Win The Critically Lauded American Hustle On Blu-ray!

April 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

american-hustle-bd-coverAmerican Hustle got a whopping 10 Oscar nominations, including the rare feat of scoring a nom in all of the acting categories, as well as the likes of Best Film and Best Director. Now it’s heading to DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on April 28th, and we’ve got three copies to give away.

Set in the seductive world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock the United States, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning British partner and lover Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild unhinged FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).

DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, American Hustle defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.

If you’d like to try and win one of the three copies of American Hustle on Blu-ray that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on May 10th 2014, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

Boyhood Trailer – Richard Linklater’s coming of age drama filmed over 12 years

April 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve been waiting a long time for Boyhood – 12 years to be precise. Director Richard Linklater has been shooting a few scenes a year of the movie over more than a decade, which has allowed him to work with the same boy from his childhood and follow him through his adolescence.

The resulting film has already premiered to much acclaim at film festivals, and now we get to take our first look with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film tracks 6 year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane) over life’s most radically fluctuating decade, through a familiar whirl of family moves, family controversies, faltering marriages, re-marriages, new schools, first loves, lost loves, good times, scary times and a constantly unfolding mix of heartbreak and wonder. But the results are unpredictable, as one moment braids into the next, entwining into a deeply personal experience of the incidents that shape us as we grow up and the ever-changing nature of our lives.

‘As the story begins, dreamy-eyed grade-schooler Mason faces upheaval: his devoted, struggling single mom Olivia (Patricia Arquette) has decided to move him and older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater) to Houston – just as their long-absent father Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) returns from Alaska to re-enter their world. Thus begins life’s non-stop flux. Yet through a tide of parents and stepparents, girls, teachers and bosses, dangers, yearnings and creative passions, Mason emerges to head down his own road.’

The film’s due out July 11th. [Read more…]
