Diederik Van Rooijen Tapped For The Birds Remake

March 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

birds-1963-Tippi-HedrenFor many years there’s been talk of a remake of The Birds, but it’s been trapped in development hell to the point most people had assumed the whole idea had been given up on. However it turns out it’s alive as Universal Pictures and Platinum Dunes have signed up Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen to helm, according to THR.

Van Rooijen is best known for directing films such as Taped, Daylight, Stella’s Oorlog and Bollywood Hero.

Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 classic follows Tippi Hedren’s Melanie Daniels, who heads from San Francisco to a small town in Northern California. Things soon get strange when for no apparent reason all the birds begins to attack, with nature seeming to want to take over.

The main problem with the remake seems to have been getting the script right – after all Hitchcock’s movie is rather bizarre, and without his touch it’s going to be difficult for the whole thing not to seem stupid. The likes os Paul Harris Boardman, Scott Derrickson, Juliet Snowden, Stiles White and Leslie Dixon have all worked on the screenplay. It’s not known when it might shoot.

First Look At Douglas Booth, Sam Claflin, Max Irons & The Other Hot Boys Of Posh

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

posh-pic1-slide
In 2010 The Royal Court Theatre in London had a major success with Laura Wade’s Posh, which premiered at the venue and then transferred to the West End. Now it’s becoming a film and they’ve got some of the best – and prettiest – young British actors to fill out the cast, including Catching Fire’s Sam Claflin, Romeo & Juliet’s Douglas Booth and The Host’s Max Irons.

The first images from the movie have been released, which you can see below (click on them for larger versions).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set amongst the privileged elite of Oxford University, POSH follows Miles (Max Irons) and Alistair (Sam Claflin), two first year students determined to join the infamous Riot Club, where reputations can be made or destroyed over the course of a single evening.  POSH is directed by Lone Scherfig, who most recently helmed ‘One Day’, and the Best Picture Academy Award nominee ‘An Education’.  It is produced by Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures (‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, ‘Seven Psychopaths’).

‘Screenwriter Laura Wade has adapted her critically-acclaimed play, with development support from the BFI Film Fund and Film4.  ‘Posh’ premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2010, before transferring to the West End.’

It’s due out in UK cinemas on September 19th.

The Final Member Trailer – The race to be the first human exhibit in the world’s only penis museum

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I know a couple of gay guys who think their penis is so awesome it should be showcased in a museum (and if you think similarly, please be aware that you are probably delusional), but there is only one Penis Museum in the world, in Iceland, and at the moment it’s lacking a human member.

The documentary The Final Member takes a look at the competition to complete the museum’s collection and the representative of human male genitalia alongside naughty bits from hundreds of other mammalian species. And it is a race, as the doc follows two men who’ve lined up for the honour – one who’s agreed to leave his penis to the museum when he dies, and an American who’s so keen to donate, he’s willing to have his bits removed while he’s still alive. And in case you were wondering, yes, the latter guy is a bit odd.

You can take a look at the trailer for the unusual documentary above. The doc is in US cinemas & on VOD on April 18th from Drafthouse Films [Read more…]

Fred Trailer – Taking a look at the first ever out-gay Presidential candidate, Fred Karger

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Fred Karger is definitely an interesting figure. He worked on nine presidential campaigns and served as a senior consultant to the campaigns of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Gerald Ford. Then in 2012 he ran for President himself.

What was particularly unusual about that is that after working with and for all those Presidents, Karger came out as gay, and his Presidential run was the first time an out-gay person has tried to get the nomination from one of the major US parties. And while many had assumed that when a gay Presidential candidate emerged it would be a Demncrat, Karger is a Republican.

Now a new documentary, Fred, is taking a look at Karger’s life and his attempt to become President – an action he took not because he expected to end up in the White House, but initially to throw a spanner in the works of Mitt Romney’s campaign and later to fight against the bigotry of the likes of Michelle Bachman. He also took the opportunity to highlight gay rights and causes and to try and engage LGBT people and organisations in politics.

The trailer for the film is now here, so take a look at it above. [Read more…]

HBO Announces May 25th Debut For Ryan Murphy’s The Normal Heart

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-ruffalo-taylor-kitsch-normal-heartFollowing the success of Behind The Candelabra and Looking, HBO certainly hasn’t had enough of gay-themed entertainment. One of its biggest original movies of 2014 is The Normal Heart, directed by Glee’s Ryan Murphy. The film, based on Larry Kramer’s acclaimed play about the early days of the AIDS epidemic, is a bit of an all-star affair.

Now it’s been announced the date it will first air in the US, with ComingSoon revealing it will debut Sunday, May 25th at 9:00 pm (ET/PT) on HBO.

Mark Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which later was called HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matt Bomer is Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover. Jonathan Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. He later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

It’s not clear when the rest of the world will get to see The Normal Heart, but it should be shortly after the US HBO premiere.

Gay-Themed Horror-Drama The Boy Seeks Funding

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A gay-themed horror movie isn’t unprecedented but it’s still definitely unusual. Now a new one is in the works and it’s turned to Indiegogo to try and raise $15,000 to get the movie made. It could be an interesting one as while it is a horror movie, it also takes a dramatic look at the effects of ignorance and homophobia.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Boy is a horror/thriller about how far one African family will go to save their son from the demons that they believe he is possessed by. When immigrant parents start to notice disturbing behavior in their only son, they call on a local tribal healer to rid their son of the “demon.” After a grueling ritual we learn that nothing is what it seems and their son may not be possessed after all – he’s just gay. Will the family believe he was simply born this way or will they continue with a ritual that could result in the boy’s death? Dark, mysterious and horrific are just a few of the words that describe the rituals depicted in this film.’

Producer James Peoples and director Cayman Grant told HuffPo, “The Boy is an important film on many levels. As storytellers, we have a responsibility to educate and inform. As filmmakers, we get to do that in the form of entertainment. This ‘horror’ genre film brings to light the atrocities that are happening to our gay youth here at home and abroad. In recent months, this specific subject matter has become a hot topic with the deaths and abuse of countless children and young adults.”

If you’d like to find out more about the movie, head over the Indiegogo. [Read more…]

It seems we’ve been waiting ages for Muppets Most Wanted, but now it’s close to release and to celebrate that Disney has released a new trailer, featuring a song all about doing a sequel. Bobin co-wrote the screenplay with Nicholas Stoller, who is also executive producer with John G. Scotti. Patrick Wilson Joins Marvel’s Ant-Man In An Unknown Role

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrick-wilsonAfter Watchmen Patrick Wilson is returning to the world of superheroes, this time stepping into Marvel’s universe for Ant-Man. He has landed the last major role in the movie, according to Deadline, although it hasn’t been revealed who Wilson will play.

Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd are starring as Hank Pym and Scott Lang, the original Ant-man and the guy who ends up becoming his successor. It’s believed the plot starts in the 1960s, where Hank Pym, who has invented technology that can shrink him to a tiny size, is working as a spy fighting Communism for the government. The story then shifts to the present day, where Michael Douglas is an older Hank Pym. It’s been suggested Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang initially steals Pym’s tech, but eventually starts to work with him and become the Ant-man.

Michael Pena is also attached, playing a villain named Castillo, while Evangeline Lilly is in talks to play the female lead. He character is said to be Hank Pym’s daughter and the love interest of Scott Lang. How Patrick Wilson will fit into all this isn’t known.

Edgar Wright is directing from a script he co-wrote alongside Joe Cornish, with shooting set to begin in April.

Jeff Goldblum Likely To Return For Independence Day 2 But Not Jurassic World

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jeff-goldblumIn the 90s Jeff Goldblum was part of two of the biggest movies of the decade – Independence Day and Jurassic Park. With sequels to both those films currently getting closer to shooting, that actor has revealed that he is in talks for the Independence Day 2, but that no one has approached him to appear in Jurassic World.

While doing press for  The Grand Budapest Hotel, Jeff Goldblum revealed he hasn’t read the script for the second Independence Day film yet, although he knows things are moving forward fast. HuffPo reports him as saying, “Yeah, they’ve talked to me about it and I’ve talked to them about it and they’re excited and I’m anxious and eager to see – I haven’t read anything – what they cook up. You know, I think they’re trying to put it together.”

On Jurassic World he says, “Yeah…they haven’t called me for 4, I know Steven Spielberg isn’t directing it…”

Although that suggests he only wants to do dino movies Spielberg helms, when asked if that’s why didn’t return for  Jurassic Park III, he says, “No, nobody asked me, but I was perfectly satisfied with the two that I did. I’m still satisfied with that and I’ll be the first in line to see anything else, so, you know.”
