First Official Pic Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In The Imitation Game Arrives

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-pic1
A couple of days ago the Queen official pardoned codebreaker Alan Turing for the ‘crime’ of being gay at a time when it was illegal, which led to a criminal record and chemical castration, and many believe also resulted in his committing suicide. It’s a good time then for the emergence of the first official picture of Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing in the biopic The Imitation Game – indeed the pardon is the reason the film’s Twitter account tweeted the pic.

Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. The film will chronicle the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment.

Tragically in the 1950s Turing admitted to the police he was gay while reporting a robbery, believing they would protect him and catch those who’d stolen from him. Instead it was him who found himself in court. After he was convicted he was shunned by the establishment and despite his incredible mind he found himself pushed to the sideline. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. The Imitation Game will be out sometime in 2014.

Ben Affleck Isn’t Happy In The First Pic From David Fincher’s Gone Girl

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gone-girl-pic1
A new David Fincher movie is always something to keep an eye on, and now we get our first glimpse at his upcoming Gone Girl, as tweeted by 20th Century Fox, with Ben Affleck standing in front of a poster of Rosamund Pike. It’s not the most revealing image, unless you’ve read Gillian Flynn’s novel, which the movie is based on.

Affleck plays a husband whose wife (Pike) goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. Inevitably the hubby becomes the primary suspect in her mysterious disappearance, with the signs of a struggle making many assume he has killed her, especially when reasons emerge as to why he might have wanted her out of they. However, as we learn more about the couple’s relationship, things become much more complex than they first appear.

The film is due out autumn 2014.

New Pompeii Poster Sees Kit Harington Having A Romantic Eruption

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pompeii-poster1
If I were standing next to a volcano that was spew lava bomb, magma and pyroclastic flows, I don’t think I’d bother to take the time to have a kiss, but it seems Kit Harington and Emily Browning think differently in this new poster for Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii.

The movie is set days before the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It centres on former slave Milo (Harington), who must race to save his true love Flavia (Emily Browning). Jessica Lucas is playing a slave who is a confidante to Flavia. Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje also star.

Janet Scott Batchler and Lee Batchler wrote the original screenplay, which was revised by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. Paul W.S. Anderson’s movie is out in February. It’s certainly looking pretty epic, although is this poster is anything to go by, it’ll also be a little over the top.

Apropos Of Nothing: Pump! Underwear Gets Hot & Sweaty With A Sexy New Workout Video

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pump-video-slideIf you’re an underwear brand you have a very good excuse to make adverts featuring guys not wearing very much, and yet you can still claim you’re just doing sensible marketing and not trying to get people excited about certain bulges.

That’s obviously Pump! underwear‘s thinking with this new video. After all, who doesn’t work out and get incredibly sweaty wearing just their underpants? And at no point in the video does the camera linger on the men’s body and body and naughty bits.

Well, okay, maybe it does, but we’re certainly not complaining (we’re not sure what they powder throwing is all about, but it looks good). Take a look at the sexy new vid and rather cool fall/winter undies below. [Read more…]

Wedding Plan Short Film – Quentin Lee’s fake PSA about gay men marrying lesbians in China

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In China, it’s not all that uncommon for a lesbian woman to marry a gay man, with both hoping this will lift the pressure on them from society to hook up with someone of the opposite gender. Now Hong-Kong-Canadian filmmaker Quentin Lee has made a short about this, hoping that it will go viral in China.

Lee says, “One of my Beijing lesbian friends told me that she was about to get married with a gay man because she wanted to get her parents off her back, and I was immediately inspired to do something about how young Chinese people, LGBT and beyond, are pressured to get married which is a really hot issue right now.

“I chose the short fictional PSA [public service announcement] format because it’s the best way to get the message out to Chinese audience on the web. The Chinese government is still relaxed on short film production. As all LGBT content is potentially subject to being banned in China, it’s a challenge to do something that talks about LGBT issues while being acceptable.”

The short, which stars actress Meng Tingyi and Chinese gay rights activist Xiaogang Wei, was released on the QueerComrades website, but you can watch it above. [Read more…]

Glee’s Dot-Marie Jones Marries Her Girlfriend

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dot-Marie-Jones-Bridgett-CasteenBack in October, Glee’s Coach Bieste, aka actress Dot-Marie Jones, announced that she was engaged to her girlfriend, Bridgett Casteen, having proposed at Disneyland’s Gay Days. Now they’ve taken the final leap and gotten married in a surprise ceremony.

People magazine reports, ‘Close friends of Jones, 49, and Casteen were invited to a holiday party at the couple’s home. The duo then surprised their guests by informing them that they were actually gathered to witness their nuptials.’

This is Jones’ first marriage, although Casteen has two children from a previous marriage.

We wish then both the best of luck.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Cinema)

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Stiller, Adam Scott, Shirley Maclaine, Sean Penn, Kristen Wiig
Director: Ben Stiller
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: December 26th 2013

There’s one thing to be said of Ben Stiller’s reimagining of famous daydreamer Mitty – he certainly captures the mood of the times. Mitty works at Life magazine, which is going digital, and most of the staff are being laid off. The ‘digital takeover’ is being handled by Ted (a gloriously oily Adam Scott) and there are many scenes of upset worker carrying brown boxes containing their meagre possessions out of the building, security guard in tow. We’re the Millers Director Rawson Marshall Thurber Up For Central Intelligence

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rawson-marshall-thurberThe comedy Central Intelligence has been doing the round in Hollywood for several years, but now it’s being given some new impetus as THR reports that Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, We’re the Millers, Easy A) is set to direct.

Ed Helms has been attached to star for a couple of years, but put the breaks on the project when The Hangover became a hit. With his schedule full of sequels to that movie and The Office, Central Intelligence went on the backburner, however with both of those now completed, he has time for the film. The movie is about a dim accountant who is thrown into a world of international espionage after reconnecting with an old friend on Facebook.

Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen wrote the original script, but now Thurber will given it a final polish before it shoot sometime next year.

And is it just me, or is Thurber quite the hottie?

Paul Walker Will Appear In Fast & Furious 7, As A New Release Date Is Set

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fast-and-furious-6-pic1After the tragic death of Paul Walker, it was quickly announced that Fast & Furious 7 would be delayed, although there were conflicting reports over whether the film would restart from scratch and remove Walker’s character, or if they would find some way to incorporate him, even though he hadn’t completed his scenes.

Now THR reports that Walker will indeed be in the movie, although there are no specific details on how this will be achieved.

Vin Diesel has also confirmed a new release date, saying that rather than a July 2014 release, it will be coming out April 10th, 2015, giving the movie time for rewrites and for the final scenes to be completed.

Diesel wrote on Facebook: “The last scene we filmed together…There was a unique sense of completion, of pride we shared… in the film we were now completing… the magic captured… and, in just how far we’ve come… Fast and Furious 7 will be released… April 10th 2015! P.s. He’d want you to know first…”

The Hobbit Beats Out Anchorman 2 At The US Box Office

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-desolation-poster5With a lot of films battling it out at the US box office, it wasn’t clear going into the weekend which would end up on top. In the end The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug took the number one spot, with $31.4 million.

That means it beat out the hotly tipped Anchorman 2, which came second with $26.6 million over the weekend and $40 million since it opened last Wednesday. Although not the mega-hit some had thought it might be, it’s still a pretty okay start and it should continue to have decent play of the Christmas period.

After expanding their screen count massively, both American Hustle and Saving Mr. Banks made their first appearance in the top 10 in fourth and fifth spot, with $19.1 million and $9.3 million respectively. It means that Hustle is playing ahead of expectations, which is likely to help its Oscar chances, while Saving Mr. Banks is probably going to need a few awards nods if it’s going to turn into a significant US hit.

Walking With Dinosaurs failed to attract much of an audience, earning just $7.3 million in its first three days. Although it will continue to play over Christmas, it’s still likely to be seen as a significant failure.

More impressive was Dhoom 3, which may have earned only around half of what Walking With Dinosaurs did, but it did so on less than 10% of the screens the dino movie had. It’s $3.3 million weekend is a record for a Bollywood movie in the US, which very rarely make the top 10.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 20th-22nd 2013.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug $31.4 $127.5
2 Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues $26.7 $40.0
3 Frozen $19.1 $191.5
4 American Hustle $19.1 $20.2
5 Saving Mr. Banks $9.3 $9.9
6 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $8.7 $321.7
7 Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas $8.5 $28.2
8 Walking With Dinosaurs $7.3 $7.3
9 Dhoom 3 $3.3 $3.3
10 Thor: The Dark World $1.3 $200.7
