Joseph Gordon-Levitt May Star In & Direct Neil Gaiman’s Sandman

December 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joseph-Gordon-Levitt-The-Dark-Knight-Rises
Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s love of comic book culture has already led to roles in the likes of GI Joe and Dark Knight Rises. Now that’s he’s got his directorial debut, Don Jon, under his belt, he’s looking to adapt a comic property many before him have tried to get to the screen – Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.

Rumours emerged last month that he was thinking about starring in an adaptation of the comics, but now Deadline reports that he is finalising a deal to star, produce and direct the movie. The movie will team him with Dark Knight Trilogy veteran David S. Goyer, who recently pitched a well-received take on the DC Comics property, which they’re now going to try to make into a workable script. The studio is currently seeking a writer to adapt the comic book.

Gordon-Levitt will play Morpheus, the personification of Dreams in a family known as The Endless, whose members represent other aspects of life such as Death, Delirium, Desire, Destruction, Despair and Destiny. The story follows Morpheus, who escapes after being held captive by a wizard for the past 70 years. He goes on a journey to get revenge for his imprisonment, while trying to rebuild his empire and adapt to the current society.

First Look At Tom Hardy & Gary Oldman In Child 44

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Child-44-pic1
Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman obviously didn’t have enough of each on The Dark Knight Rises set (not that they had a vast amount of screen time together), as they’ve gotten back together for Child 44. Now the first images from the film have arrived, via RopesOfSilicon, featuring Hardy, Oldman and Noomi Rapace.

Based on Tom Rob Smith’s novel, with Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa directing, the Soviet Union set thriller is about a military police officer named Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy) who has to investigate a string of brutal child murders that took place during the Stalin era. As he begins to dig further and further into the case, he realises that his government is keeping a sharp eye on every move he makes, and refuses to admit that the killings are actually happening.

Oldman is the head of police, who has problems with what Hardy is doing, while Rapace, who’s in the image below, is Tom’s wife.

Vincent Cassel, Joel Kinnaman, Jason Clarke and Paddy Considine also star. It’ll be in cinemas next year.

Five Holidays Tips from That Awkward Moment – Including How To Pee While, Err, Excited

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There was a lot of excitement a few weeks ago when a red band trailer for That Awkward Moment arrived and with it a shot of Zac Efron’s nude, while lying on a toilet. Well now that footage is back as a festive tip, so that men can learn how to pee while they’re standing to attention.

It’s one of ‘Five Ways To Avoid An Awkward Holiday’ in a special video that’s been put together to promote the film, and which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan star in the R-rated comedy, THAT AWKWARD MOMENT, about three best friends who find themselves where we’ve all been– at that confusing “moment” in every dating relationship when you have to decide “So…where is this going?”‘

The movie is out in January. [Read more…]

Queens And Cowboys Trailer – Documentary about Gay Rodeo Association seeks funding

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rodeos certainly aren’t seen as stereotypically gay places, but that doesn’t mean LGBT don’t have anything to do with them. Indeed, as the documentary Queens And Cowboys sets out to show, there’s even an International Gay Rodeo Association.

Now the film has launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise $25,500 to get the film completed and ready for screening.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘”QUEENS & COWBOYS: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo” chronicles a complete season of the International Gay Rodeo Association through the lens of a straight, city-raised filmmaker named Matt Livadary. Roping and riding in 15 rodeos across North America that year, the IGRA’s courageous cowboys and cowgirls brave challenges both in and out of the arena on their quest to qualify for the World Finals in October. And along the way, they’ll bust every stereotype in the book.

‘But it’s more than just cowboys and rodeos. The film exposes the world to the unsung LGBT community of both the old and new west.  Examining where our country currently stands on the issue of gay rights, this uniquely American subject explores how far we’ve come, and what challenges we still have ahead.’

First Footage Of Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch & Julia Roberts In The AIDS Drama The Normal Heart

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Just yesterday we brought you a new image from Ryan Murphy’s HBO TV movie The Normal Heart, which is based on Larry Kramer’s acclaimed play about the early days of AIDS crisis. Now our attention has been drawn to the fact that the first footage from the film has debuted – even if it’s a bit blink and you’ll miss it.

The shots come as part of a montage of what HBO has to offer in 2014, which means it only has time for a couple of seconds from The Normal Heart, although that’s enough to show us Mark Ruffalo being hauled away by cops, Julia Roberts as a doctor, Jim Parsons looking a little lonely, Taylor Kitsch being upset and Ruffalo going nose-to-nose (in a cute way) with Matt Bomer.

You can watch the footage above, which should be lined up so it starts just before the Normal Heart footage begins.

Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but later became HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matt Bomer is Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover. Jonathan Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. He later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

HBO will air the movie next year. [Read more…]

We’re The Millers – Extended Cut (DVD)

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Will Poulter, Emma Roberts, Ed Helms
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Running Time: 114 min
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 16th 2013

I’m not sure when it was that Hollywood decided that it would be best if all comedies were about people who are essentially assholes, but it certainly seems to be the trend. Often it completely ruins the film as it’s difficult to care about unpleasant people being horrible to one another, even if by the end they learn not to be such big assholes. At the beginning of We’re The Millers I was worried that would be the problem here, but almost to my surprise it began to win me over. [Read more…]

Hitchcock Legend Joan Fontaine Dies Aged 96

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joan-fontaineJoan Fontaine, best known for her roles in Hitchcock’s Rebecca and Suspicion, has passed away aged 96, it’s been announced. Born in Tokyo to British parents, she was raised in California alongside her sister, Olivia de Havilland.

She started acting in the 1930s, getting her great breakthrough playing the lead role opposite Lawrence Olivier in the Best picture Oscar winning Rebecca. The film scored her an Oscar nomination, but it was the next year she won, getting Best Actress for Suspicion. She garnered a further nomination  for 1943’s The Constant Nymph.

After he early 40s heyday, she never quite saw the same success again, although she did appear in the likes of Ivanhoe, Island In The Sun and The Witches.

Fontaine also famously had a fractious relationship with Gone With The Wind actress De Havilland, which is believed to have been made worse when they became the first sisters to be Oscar nominated in the same year. Fontaine won for Suspicion that year. Sadly they remained estranged.

Screen Legend Peter O’Toole Passes Away Aged 81

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peter-otooleOne of the last great, British hell-raising British actors of the 1960s has passed away, as it’s been announced that Peter O’Toole has died aged 81. O’Toole had one of the great screen breakthroughs of all time, snagging the leading role in David Lean’s wonderful Lawrence Of Arabia. It took him from virtual unknown to major star in one swoop – even though he was always a bit circumspect about fame.

The Irish born but Leeds raised O’Toole was not one hit wonder though, becoming a true screen legend who could turn his hand to almost any role. That’s testified to by the fact he scored eight Oscar nomination, but he was always the bridesmaid as he famously never won a competitive one (he did pick up an honorary Oscar in 2003 though).

His great films include Becket, Man Of La Mancha, The Lion In Winter, Goodbye Mr. Chips, The Last Empeor and Venus. While he cut back on roles in recent years, he did appear in the likes of Ratatouille and the TV series, The Tudor. He officially announced his retirement in 2012, but he didn’t quite stick to that, as he will be seen in the upcoming Katherine Of Alexandria.

The Hobbit Desolates The US Box Office With $73 Million

December 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-desolation-poster2There was little doubt that The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug would top the US box office this weekend. The only question was how much it would take. There was a lot of disagreement going into the weekend, with some suggesting it could take as much as $80 million, while others thought it would struggle to make $70 million.

In the end it made a strong but not as spectacular as some had expected $73.6 million. It’s certainly not a disaster, and with a strong international showing it’s likely to end up grossing around the same as the billion pounds the first movie took worldwide. It’s also true that the film faced strong holdovers from Catching Fire and Frozen, which may have affected it opening, but it should make up some US ground over the coming week.

The only other new opener was Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas, which disappointed with $16 million. Most of Perry’s other Madea movies have had $25+ million openings, so despite the festive theme, it seems audiences aren’t that interested.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 13th-15th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug $73.6 $73.6
2 Frozen $22.1 $164.3
3 Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas $16.0 $16.0
4 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $13.1 $356.9
5 Thor: The Dark World $2.7 $198.1
6 Out Of The Furnace $2.3 $9.4
7 Delivery Man $1.8 $27.9
8 Philomena $1.7 $11.0
9 The Book Thief $1,6 $14.8
10 Homefront $1.6 $18.4

Crush Of The Day: The Shirtless Hunks Of King Kong – The Musical

December 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

King-Kong-Kingsmen-Wallpaper
Did you know there’s a musical version of King Kong? Nope, neither did we, but now we’ve seen the incredibly hot shirtless guys who are in it, we’re feeling the need to hop on a plane to Australia to check it out.

The show opened in Melbourne in May and unfortunately it’s closing on February 16, 2014. However it’s been enough of a success that they’re already thinking about a North American tour. They’ve also got a lot on international attention in the last couple of days thanks to a very hot calendar of the male cast they’that’s been released. Indeed it seems a lot of the marketing is more interested in the hotness of the show’s shirtless studs than it is in the giant monkey – not that we’re complaining.

The musical itself has won numerous Helpmann Awards though (The Aussie version of the Tony) including Best Lighting, Best Sound, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design and Outstanding Theatrical Achievement.

New Pic From Ryan Murphy’s AIDS Drama The Normal Heart Debuts

December 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

normal-heart-new-pic1
After their success with Behind The Candelabra, HBO will be hoping for some more next year with another gay-themed movie that ended up at the pay TV network after normal funding channels turned it down – Ryan Murphy’s The Normal Heart.

Now a new image of Mark Ruffalo in the movie has arrived, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly (and you can see the previously released one below).

The film is based on Larry Kramer’s acclaimed play about the emergence of AIDS. Alongside Ruffalo, the movie stars the likes of Taylor Kitsch, Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons and Jonathan Groff.

Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but later became HIV/AIDS. HBO will air the movie sometime early in 2014.
