Ben Stiller Gets Strange In Two New Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Posters

September 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Secret-Life-of-Walter-Mitty-Teaser-One-Sheet2
There’s already a lot of buzz for The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, which the studio is now trying to build ahead of the film’s release this Christmas. There’s a lot riding on it, as some are already suggesting the film could make a strong awards run.

Now two new posters have been released, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ben Stiller directs and stars in THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, James Thurber’s classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.’

You can take a look at another recent poster here, and a trailer here.

Neighbors Red Band Trailer – Zac Efron & Dave Franco turn frat boys

September 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’ve lived next door to a frat house, and to be honest, it wasn’t that bad, but that’s not the case for Seth Rogen, who gets good news and bad news when he has new neighbors.

The good news is that Zac Efron and Dave Franco have moved in, but the bad is that they are part of a loud, hard-partying frat who really don’t care what sort of chaos they cause the neighborhood.

After a rather hot pic of Efron in the movie landed a couple of days ago (which you can see below), now a red band trailer for Neighbors has landed, showing just what sort of disruption the Rogen and Rose Byrne experience when the boys come to town.

The film will be in cinemas early next year.

The Butler Fights Off One Direction At The US Box Office

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

one-direction-this-is-us-posterWhile One Direction’s 3D documentary, This Is Us, topped the three-day weekend, when estimates for the Labor Day holiday were added in, The Butler held off the boy band onslaught to take the top spot on the US box office chart with $20 million.

This Is Us took the second spot with $18 million. That’s below the likes of Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson, but ahead of flops from Katy Perry and the Jonas Brothers. And seeing as it only cost $10 million to make it should be very profitable.

However the big story was the film at number 5, Instructions Not Included. Few mainstream film analysts had even heard of the movie, largely because it was only opening on 347 screens. However its 10 million four-day take ended up being the biggest opening ever for a Spanish-language movie. While movies for Hispanic audiences have been growing in popularity, this one blew all previous efforts out of the water.

The final new entry was the Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez movie Getaway, which just snuck into the top 10 with a less than impressive $5.5 million.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 30th to September 2nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $20.0 $79.2
2 One Direction: This Is Us $18.0 $18.0
3 We’re The Millers $15.9 $112.8
4 Planes $10.6 $73.7

Iris Prize 2013 Montage – Get a glimpse at the films competing for the LGBT short film prize

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, the films competing at this year’s Iris Prize festival were announced, with 30 short films competing for the prize, which is valued at £25,000 and gives funding and support for the winner to make another film.

Now a montage of the competing shorts has been released, which you can take a look at above, allowing us a glimpse at the eclectic selection, which range from the zany (giant rabbits kissing, anyone?) to the overtly emotional.

The films will screen during this year’s Iris Prize Festival which takes place from October 9th-13th in Cardiff. [Read more…]

Under The Skin Teaser Trailer – Scarlett Johansson turns alien

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scarlett Johansson might look like us, but she’s actually an alien who preys on men! Well, at least she is in Under The Skin.

It’s taken a while for the first teaser trailer to arrive, but it’s here now, with Johansson looking sultry as an alien on earth, disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman. She scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey – her voracious sexuality. She is deadly efficient, but over time becomes drawn to and changed by the complexity of life on earth. With this new found humanity and weakening alien resolve, she finds herself on a collision course with her own kind. Taking her point of view throughout, the film presents a unique look at our world through alien eyes.

The plot is essentially Species but as the teaser shows, this is something stranger and more interesting. Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) directs the movie, which recently premiered at Telluride. [Read more…]

Terry Gilliam Creates A Fantastical World Of Ads In The First Clip From Zero Theorem

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terry Gilliam loves to create fantastical worlds, but either because of the technology of the time or a limited budget (which has been his issue in recent years), it’s often felt like he was incredibly constrained but doing really well to create something visually unique with what he had.

Well, if this first clip from Zero Theorem is anything to go by, Gilliam’s brain has been allowed out to create a big, bold world. It’s still familiar as his though, from the which of the past and the future to the slightly strange looking and dress of the people. The clip show us a bald Christoph Waltz wandering through a world that’s been taken over by ads.

Zero Theorem is about an eccentric and reclusive computer genius (Waltz), who is plagued with existential angst while working on a mysterious project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence, or the lack thereof, once and for all. However, it is only once he experiences the power of love and desire that he is able to understand his very reason for being. The story, by Pat Rushin, was partially inspired by Gilliam’s own Brazil, so it’s very apt Terry has taken the project on.

Ben Whishaw, Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton, David Thewlis, Mélanie Thierry, Lucas Hedges and Sanjeev Bhaskar co-star. The film just premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and will hopefully be released fairly soon. [Read more…]

Looking Back At The Career Of Banshee & True Blood Creator Alan Ball

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alan-ball-slide
Alan Ball is an impressive figure in both television and film making, winning countless awards that include Emmys, a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, as well as an assortment Guild of America awards. In making his mark on the industry, he has sparked a strand of cultural iconography (like the roses in American Beauty) and thus firmly established a cult following for his various TV series.

To commemorate the release of Banshee, available to own and watch instantly via blinkbox and out on DVD and Blu-ray on 2nd September, his most recent enterprise, we reminding ourselves of the gay writer/producer’s genius capabilities in continually entertaining (and the fact that everything he’s done has touched on mixed sexualities, even if it’s never been the main subject).

true-blood-alan-ballTRUE BLOOD (Creator/Writer/Producer) – True Blood, predominantly known for its toothier moments, is a triumph for Ball as the Creator. In the scene above from Season 1 Episode 8, Bill emerges out of the ground, reuniting him once again with his paramour, after he was believed to be dead. Much to the relief (and pleasure!) of Sookie, this is just one example of the kind of vampire-based viewing we sink our teeth into each week.

banshee-alan-ball
BANSHEE (Creator/Writer/Producer) –
Reminiscent of Ball’s earlier work, Banshee is set in a fast-paced hyper reality, bursting with the type of explosive full-on-action enjoyed at the cinema. Centred on the rogue outlaw of a Sheriff that is Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), there is a tone of heightened insanity that manifests within the series. This shootout scene filled with violence from the Season 1 finale is just one example of the kind of the crime and brutality we are accustomed to in this series – and we love it!

american-beauty-alan-ball
AMERICAN BEAUTY (Writer/Producer) –
Hailed as a ‘triumph of acting, writing and direction’ by Rolling Stone magazine, American Beauty is the most iconic venture made by Alan Ball, winning him three awards and a further nomination. Depicting the effects of a mid-life crisis, the film largely focuses on a father infatuated with an underage cheerleader. In this memorable scene, Lester (Kevin Spacey) fantasises about Angela (Mena Suvari) lying naked in a bed of falling rose petals, a visual masterpiece that has left a lasting impression on popular culture.

six-feet-under-alan-ball
SIX FEET UNDER (Creator/Writer/Producer) –
Comedic yet dark, Six Feet Under follows the lives of a dysfunctional family with the looming presence of death hanging over them. This opening scene from the Pilot episode was starkly brilliant! Within the first few minutes we were shocked by the sudden twists on TV show conventions, such as the death of the person who initially seemed like they’d be the main character (and he was, kind of, making appearances from the afterlife) and a fake funeral coach advertisement. Clever, witty and definitively unsettling; it’s no wonder it was so successful.

cybill-alan-ball
CYBILL (Writer/Producer) –
The 90s sitcom Cybill was Ball’s breakthrough, as it was here he climbed through the ranks, eventually becoming co-executive producer. The series is based on a twice-divorced single mother (Cybill Shepherd) attempting to pave her way into the acting industry. Full of comedy, gossip and witty banter as insinuated in this screen shot, it was a sure-fire hit.

Banshee – Season 1 is Released on Blu-ray, DVD and available to own and watch instantly via blinkbox on 2 September 2013

Chatting With Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

mayim-bialik-big-bang-theory
Mayim Bialik plays Amy in the hit comedy, The Big Bang Theory. With the sixth season just hitting DVD & Blu-ray in the UK, we grabbed an interview with the talented actress to discover her thoughts on role models, being a science geek and falling for Sheldon…

Where will Amy and Sheldon’s relationship take them in the Season 6 of The Big Bang Theory?
Wherever this relationship is going to go, it’s going to move very slowly. I was talking to [executive producer] Bill Prady about this recently and I feel like we’ve brought the art of courtship back with their relationship. It’s incredibly sweet. There is a very limited but simple and honest communication about what each person wants, but it’s very slow and that’s fine. We saw some hints of where it might go during the last season. Obviously, dressing me in a Star Trek uniform was a nod to getting him to see things my way. And then Sheldon holds Amy’s hand in the season finale and I think that is really telling in terms of pacing.

What is the next step for the couple?
I don’t know exactly where they are going to go next, but I think it’s always going to be interesting, slow and gentle. I’m sure [executive producers] Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Steven Molaro know where they want to take it, but they are keeping quiet for now.

Where do you want them to go next?
I think the relationship could go any number of ways, but it will be something consistent with Sheldon’s character. We’re either going to see his personal evolution or him and his social circle accepting Amy more into his life. He’ll learn new things about himself or he’ll learn new limits to his boundaries or new boundaries. It’s going to be fun.

What do you like about their relationship?
I love the verbal sparring between Amy and Sheldon. I also love the non-romantics aspects of their romance. I think that’s really sweet. There has never been any mention of Amy’s attractiveness or lack of attractiveness to Sheldon. He likes her as she is. It’s so sweet that it’s irrelevant to him. He’s truly in love with her mind, which is why I like the way they verbally spar. When they spar intellectually, that’s their way of romantically connecting.

How would you like to see Amy grow this year?
That’s a hard question to answer. The last season was dominated by female plotlines, which was clever – but I don’t doubt that Chuck, Steve and Bill will have new ways to keep that fresh because there are a lot more places we can go with these fun female plots. Fans of the show tell me that it’s funny yet tender when Amy fails or when she’s left out, which is really sweet. Chuck Lorre is a master at delving gently into the deeper emotions, so let’s see where he takes us.

Do you enjoy watching the other relationships on the show?
I think we have a number of interesting romances and relationships on our show. There’s Amy and Sheldon and there’s Howard and Bernadette – but then there are the other fun relationships, like the Wolowitz and Raj intimacy, which is really sweet. Of course, it’s funny and it’s good for a laugh – but I also think it’s sweet that Amy has a real affection for Penny that seems to come out all the time. I’ve heard that there is a lot of appreciation for it in the lesbian and gay community; the fact that people appreciate the female form whether you’re a heterosexual or homosexual, or anything in between. I think that’s been really sweet for our show.

What was it like to meet Stephen Hawking and Leonard Nimoy last season?
I wasn’t working the week that Leonard Nimoy was on the show, which was horrible for me personally because I am a big fan of his. I also wasn’t due to work on Stephen’s episode, but I was able to go to his 70th birthday party, which was amazing. I went along with a bunch of writers and producers including Bill Prady and Steven Molaro, and it was thrilling to meet Stephen Hawking personally. And then Dr Hawking came to the set for a run-through, which was also exciting. I was told, “Stephen is coming in today, so come along to the run-through.” Again, that was thrilling.

Which other iconic guest stars would you like to see appear on the show?
Once you’ve had Stephen Hawking on your show, where do you go from there? How do you top that? That’s tough. There are a few neuroscience people that I would love to see, but I’ve got no idea what the producers have planned for this season. It’s Bill Prady’s personal goal to have the entire cast of every Star Trek series appear on our show. I guess that’s where we’re headed!

How much of a geek are you in real life?
I’m a total geek. I love our cast, but I am the one who reads comic books, who goes to comic bookstores, who loves sci-fi and all that stuff. Among the cast, I’m the one who is into things like Comic-Con more than the rest.

Do you feel a certain kinship with the producers because you share their geek tendencies?
Definitely. I don’t know if it’s my best-kept secret, but I belong much more with Bill, Steve and Chuck because they are much more into geek culture like me.

Given your highly scientific background, do you ever catch any scientific lingo being misused in the script?
I twitch when something is wrong in the script, but I try to keep it inside. I’m not just trained in neuroscience; I’m trained in chemistry, biology, anatomy and some physics, so I know when something’s wrong.

When was the last time you twitched about an error in the script?
Last year, there was a scene where Amy was teaching Sheldon how to give himself a massage. They were talking on the phone, but they described the wrong muscle in the script and I started to twitch. It wasn’t even my line, but I couldn’t keep a straight face. Chuck said to me, “Is this wrong? Could you just fix it and email us.” It’s hard to stand up to Chuck Lorre about things like that, but they want the anatomy right and I’m definitely there to help sometimes.

Do you see yourself as a role model for smart women?
In general, I think our show has really raised the bar for geek-dom. I think that’s been really special. However, it’s also been neat to be part of the scientific female force of the show, alongside Melissa Rauch. Kaley Cuoco’s character [Penny] is the main female presence on the show, but we’re now there, too.

Who were you role models when you were growing up?
I was a huge fan of Parker Posey. She was the quirky girl on screen when I was going to movies as a teenager. I think quirkiness has blossomed a lot more culturally since then, especially with clothes and fashion. Quirky clothes were unusual then, but now you see an entire store dedicated to funky, weird clothes and all sorts of permutations.

Did you enjoy your break during the show’s hiatus this summer?
I had a lot of work stuff to complete in the month of June, so I only had July off. I have two little boys, so it’s been hard – but I spent a lot of July at the beach, playing, cooking and doing the laundry regularly instead of only being home at the weekend. It was fun, but I’m also looking forward to getting back to work. We have a sweet show and we have a lot of fun putting it together every week. I’m having a blast.

Fugitive Director Andrew Davis Is Going To Treasure Island

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrew-DavisA couple of years ago several versions of Treasure Island went into development, although none actually made it into production. Now The Fugitive director Andrew Davis, who hasn’t made a film since the 2006 drama The Guardian, has revealed that he is planning a modern-day remake of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, entitled Thieves Fortune, according to Crave.

Davis says, “I’m currently putting together a modern version of Treasure Island set in post Katrina Louisiana called Thieves Fortune. It’s the treasure of Jean LaFitte and I think it could be a really interesting, fun movie that could be about something and still be very entertaining.”

The director is currently working on the screenplay with George Gallo and a number of other writers. The project doesn’t have studio backing yet, but the director said they will start pitching it once the script is complete and a cast is attached.

“I’ve turned down a lot of violent action movies which I don’t want to do” Davis says. “I don’t want to make a film where violence is the entertainment. I had a great time with Holes (which he produced but didn’t direct). I’m interested in doing family movies or four quadrant movies that are based upon quality literature or books.”

Charlie Hunnam & Dakota Johnson On For Fifty Shades of Grey

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-hunnam-shirtless-pacific-rim-close-upMany actors have been rumoured to play Christian Grey in the movie version of 30 Shades Of Grey. The last was Charlie Hunnam and now it’s been confirmed that he’s got the role. He’s also got a co-star, as Dakota Johnson will be Anastasia.

The film is set to be released on August 1, 2014 with Sam Taylor-Johnson directing from a script by Kelly Marcel, based on E.L. James’ bestselling book. The Fifty Shades trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever.

Fifty Shades of Grey follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Subsequent novels in the series, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, explore the couple’s deepening relationship. It’s been dubbed ‘mommy porn’ due to the endless scenes of fetish sex, but it’s not known how hardcore the film version will be. Hopefully though, the pic above will be the most clothed Hunnam is during the movie.

Johnson has been seen in the likes of 21 Jump Street, and The Five-Year Engagement, and also stars in the upcoming Need For Speed, while the British Hunnam is best known for Pacific Rim and the TV series Sons Of Anarchy.

Hopefully Brett Easton Ellis will approve. Despite being gay himself, he decided Matt Bomer was ‘too gay’ to play Christian Grey, but presumably he won’t mind Hunnam, even if he did get his first break playing Nathan in the UK’s Queer As Folk. Or perhaps Ellis can just shut up about the whole thing.

Mud (Blu-ray)

Starring: Tye Sheridan, Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepard, Jacob Lofland
Director: Jeff Nichols
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: September 2nd 2013

Director Jeff Nichols impressed many with his film Take Shelter and has got a lot more critical acclaim for Mud. Part Huckleberry Finn, a little bit dark fairy tale, and with more than splash of Southern Gothic and Whistle Down The Wind thrown in, it’s an absorbing film even if it likes to take its time doing anything.

Ellis (Tye Sheridan) is a young teen who lives with his parents on a houseboat in Arkansas. The river is his father’s life, although his mother is on the verge of packing up and leaving. Along with his friend, Neckbone (Jacob Loflan), Ellis heads off to find a boat that’s gotten stuck in a tree during a flood. They want to make the vessel theirs but they discover it’s being used by a man called Mud (Matthew McConaughey) as somewhere to sleep. [Read more…]

Banshee – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

Starring: Anthony Starr, Frankie Faison, Ulrich Procter, Ivana Milicevic, Ben Cross
Director: Various
Running Time: 540 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: September 2nd 2013

Alan Ball won an Oscar for writing American Beauty, but since then he’s largely stuck to TV, creating Six Feet Under, True Blood and now Banshee. While the basic plot makes Banshee sound very different from True Blood, they are to a certain extent bedfellows. In fact they could be set in the same world, except nobody in Banshee knows about the existence of Vampires and other supernatural entities (or at least they don’t mention it). [Read more…]
