Former Disney & King Cobra Star Garrett Clayton Comes Out With Post About Bullying

August 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a bit of speculation about the sexuality of Garrett Clayton, the young actor who first got noticed in Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Party. Clayton has played several queer roles, most notably playing gay porn star Brent Corrigan in King Cobra, and on several occasions has suggested he’s gay, while refusing to actually say it – leading some to suggest he was the latest inhabitant of the glass closet.

Indeed, in 2016 he defended not coming out, saying, “I just don’t think it’s pertinent to talk about my personal life. I don’t think it adds to the work; it just distracts from it.”

However, he has now decided to come out publicly and reveal that he’s also in a long-term relationship. Writing on Instagram he says, “With the release of my new movie REACH coming up, I thought it was important to explain why I took on this project in the first place. REACH deals with some very serious and timely topics that have affected me personally, and have likely influenced many of your lives as well. (I also prefer to share things that are particularly important for me here on my IG) instead of in some random magazine or online article – because you are the ones that have been rooting for me and following me on my professional and personal journey in life.

When I read the script for REACH, I immediately knew it was a film I had to be a part of. I have personally dealt with suicide within my own family, intense bullying in high school, and – on top of it all – myself and the man I’ve been in a relationship with for a long time (@hrhblakeknight) have both experienced shootings within our hometown school systems, and have witnessed the heartache that takes place in affected communities after such tragic events. These topics – not always easy to discuss- are all close to my heart, and, knowing how serious they are, I wanted to share this with you all. This film has come from the perspectives of people who care deeply about these issues, and if watching it helps even one person… then it was all worth it. ♥️”

Welcome to the club, Garrett!

Reinventing Marvin Trailer – An award-winning look at a young gay man, starring Isabelle Huppert

August 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Reinventing Marvin comes with a great pedigree, including a casting featuring the wonderful Isabelle Huppert (Elle, 8 Women), and winning the Queer Palm at the Venice Film Festival. Now a new trailer has arrived ahead of its UK release.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Reinventing Marvin tells the true story of Marvin Bijou (rising star Finnegan Oldfield), a young boy from a working-class family in a small village, suffers constant bullying at school and home for being ‘different’ – too sensitive and too feminine. ‘Following Marvin into his mid-twenties as a theatre student in Paris, Fontaine presents a richly layered tale about identity building and transformation. With an exquisite cameo from Isabelle Huppert and great performances from the reliably excellent Vincent Macaigne and Charles Berling, Reinventing Marvin packs a powerful punch.’

The movie will arrive in UK cinemas on September 14th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Critics Hit Out At Disney Casting Straight Comedian Jack Whitehall As An ‘Effete’ Gay Man

August 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As so often seems to happen with Hollywood, as it takes a step forward it also seems to be taking a step back. It’s been revealed that Disney is including its first openly gay major character in the upcoming, The Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson.

However, there has been criticism of the fact that the person cast to pay the role is straight British comedian, Jack Whitehall. There was also dismay at reports in The Sun that the character will be, ‘hugely effete, very camp and very funny.’

Many on social media have taken umbrage at Whitehall playing the role, feeling that it should have gone to a gay actor. Many have drawn perhaps dubious comparisons to the recent anger at Scarlett Johansson briefly being cast as a transgender character, suggesting it’s a missed chance to true representation. It’s also been seen as another example of Hollywood ‘gayface’, which allows a movie to ‘play gay’ while ensuring the audience knows it’s not real, as it’s actually a straight person playing the role.

Others have been more annoyed at the news that the character will be effete and very camp, suggesting it’s once more, as Omar Sharif Jr, has put it, that is falls back on “tired stereotypes used as devices to make us laugh so we’re comfortable with otherness”. Although others have riled at this suggestion, feeling that it’s gay people ‘camp shaming’, it is perhaps more accurate that the worry is this will once more feed into Hollywood’s long history of using camp men as the punchline, and of laughing at them rather than with them.

It should also be noted that while Whtehall is straight, he is quite camp (something that he’s referenced numerous times in his stand-up), so he may not actually be playing a character too far from him own personality.

As so often with these moments of social media outrage, it’s people getting angry based on little information and before we’ve actually been able to see the movie (Jungle Cruise isn’t due in cinemas until October 2019). As things stand, Disney hasn’t even confirmed Whitehall’s character is gay, let alone that he will be immensely camp and/or used as a homophobic/misogynistic joke. As previous LGBT inclusion in Disney films, such as the ‘exclusively gay moment’ in last year’s Beauty And The Beast, turned out to be damp squibs, this may turn out to be a storm in a teacup.

What Men Want Trailer – Taraji P. Henson reads men’s minds in the gender-flipped remake

August 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s a bizarre thing, but for several years the 2000 Mel Gibson movie What Women Want was the highest grossing rom-com ever. Its $374 million worldwide means it remains one of the most successful romantic comedies in history.

Now it’s getting a remake/reboot which look very timely in the #metoo era, with Taraji P. Henson taking over the role of the person who can hear the thoughts of members of the opposite sex. That gives plenty of potential to look at ideas of gender and race, although from the evidence of this trailer, it’s not clear how deep it will go.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ali Davis (Taraji P. Henson) is a successful sports agent who’s constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world… until she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts! With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test.’

Tracy Morgan, Richard Roundtree, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Josh Brener, Tamala Jones, Phoebe Robinson and Max Greenfield also star, with Adam Shankman directing. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

The Happytime Murders Red Band Trailer – Melissa McCarthy joins a grown-up puppet noir

August 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a few years The Jim Henson Company has been working on The Happytime Murders, but despite plans to shoot in 2010 and 2012, and stars likes Katherine Heigl, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx linked to it at various times, the project remained stuck in development hell. Now though it’s in the can with Melissa McCarthy starring, even if it did have a few troubles after the first trailer and poster was released, when the owners of Sesame Street sued them as they felt this very grown-up puppet movie was trying to link itself to the kids programme.

That lawsuit quickly went away, and now a new trailer has arrived to give us a fresh look at some very rude puppetry.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS is set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives, one human and one puppet, are forced to work together to try and solve who is brutally murdering the former cast of “The Happytime Gang,” a beloved classic puppet show.’

Joel McHale, Maya Rudolph and Elizabeth Banks also star. Take a look at the new trailer below. The movie will be in cinemas on August 27th. [Read more…]

Finalists Announced For The ‘Oscars Of LGBT Short Film’, The 2018 Iris Prize

August 14, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Every year in October in Cardiff, Wales, the Iris Prize LGBT+ Film Festival presents an array of fascinating films. The centrepiece of the event is the Iris Prize, which has been justifiably been called the ‘Oscars of LGBT short film’. Filtering in the best shorts from LGBT films festivals around the world as well as those submitted directly to Iris, it offers the winning filmmaker £30,000 to make their next short film here in the UK, supported by the Michael Bishop Foundation.

The organisers of the Iris Prize have now announced the 35 short films that will compete for the 2018 Iris Prize at the Festival, which takes place from October 9th to 14th. Iris Prize Chair, Andrew Pierce, comments: “This shortlist represents the very best in LGBT+ storytelling, offering a window into queer lives of the past, present and future. From love stories to tales of persecution, and from moving documentaries to joyous celebrations of freedom and pride.”

“I can’t wait to see them on a big screen and enjoy the conversations that flow after each screening. I’m always pleasantly surprised how much is packed into a short film.”

David Llewellyn, Iris Prize Media Co-ordinator, adds: “In previous years we’ve taken a kind of “Revels” approach to programming – you never quite know what to expect. There’s a lot to be said for that, but we’re also aware that audiences often want something a little more focused or tailored to their interests.”

“Certain themes always seem to emerge as the shortlists come together. In previous years, we’ve had an abundance of stories about parenting or disability or ageing. This year, we’ve noticed a number of films that tackled masculinity in interesting and provocative ways, and so we have a programme that brings together contemporary dance, brutal violence and challenging stories about gender.”

“Another programme deals with the idea of new beginnings. Stories tackling LGBT+ issues can be dark and upsetting, but the films in It’s a New Day are all life-affirming and positive, from the animated tale of a woman’s deepest desires, to a meditation on bottoming that features an animated talking poo (an Iris first).”

The films that will be competing are:
