Timur Bekmambetov Takes On The Current War

You wouldn’t think the difficulties deciding whether we use AC or DC eletrical current would be worth making a movie about, but in American it was actually an incredibly bitter war between Westinghouse and Edison, with both realising the potential dividends of having their system adopted throughout the US were so huge they’d do anything to ensure they won.

Now Variety reports that Timur Bekmambetov has just attached himself to direct The Current War, which is about the fight between the companies, based on Michael Mitnick‘s spec script. It really was a bitter battle, full of public fighting and increasingly extreme stunts. For example Edison once used Westinghouse’s current to execute a rogue elephant in the hope he could prove how dangerous it was (he was admittedly safer), and even tried to get people to refer to being electrocuted as being ‘Westinghoused’.

There is no cast attached yet, though Sacha Baron Cohen was reportedly interested in playing Edison at one point. It isn’t clear whe the movie might shoot.

Brad Bird Directing Damon Lindelof’s Mysterious Sci-fi 1952

For quite a while now, Lost producer and Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof has been working on a secretive sci-fi project known as 1952. Now Deadline reports the film has a director, with Brad Bird taking it on fresh from the success of his live-action directorial debut, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.

Disney is backing the film, which we first heard about last June, when Damon Lindelof signed a seven-figure deal to write the screenplay. No plot details have been revealed, except it will be a big-budget tentpole movie with additional multi-platform applications.

It’s believed the movie has something to do with aliens though, as 1952 was the year of numerous UFO sightings over Washington DC, leading to speculation over an imminent invasion or the President having high level meetings with extra-terrestrials. It’s also when UFO lore says Project Blue Book started, which is allegedly an attempt to scientifically study and analyse UFO activity and whether they represent a threat.

Disney is hoping that Brad Bird will make this his next feature project, with the studio eyeing a 2013 production start. The filmmaker also has 1906 in development, about the devastating San Francisco earthquake, although it isn’t known when that might be moving forward.

Sharlto Copley In Talks For Maleficent

It’s certainly been Sharlto Copley’s week, as he’s now in talks for his third major role in the past seven days, entering negotiations for the male lead in Disney’s Maleficent. Earlier this week the actor was confirmed to star in the Oldboy remake as well as Open Grave.

The actor will portray King Stefan in the live-action Maleficent, which puts a unique spin on the Sleeping Beauty story (Stefan is the sleepy princess’ father). The story is told from the villainous Maleficent’s (Angelina Jolie) point of view, which will explore why she put a curse on Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning).

Production designer Robert Stromberg (Avatar) is making his directorial debut on the movie, working from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland). Although no firm shoot date has been released it’s believed to be shooting this summer.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Plans Little Shop of Horrors Remake

The 1987 version of Little Shop Of Horrors is one of the most fun musicals ever made, while the Roger Corman 1960 original is pretty good too. Now it appears Hollywood is planning another go round, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt spearheading a new take on the film.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is drafting the new Carrie remake for MGM, is in negotiations to write the screenplay. Gordon-Levitt plans to play Krelboyne, a meek florist who must continue to feed his ever-growing – and talking – plant, which feasts on humans, to keep his newfound fame and fortune, and also hide the fact the plant has made him a murderer.

However the real question is whether this is a redo of the musical or not. While some of the initial info is contradictory, THR suggests it’s Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s musical, as Marc Platt is attached to produce, who brought Wicked to Broadway, while Aguirre-Sacasa was brought in to sort out the book for the troubled Spider-man: Turn Off The Dark.

Amber Heard & Demian Bechir Joins Machete Kills

Director Robert Rodriguez is busy filling out the cast of Machete Kills as he plans to start shooting soon and so needs to pull everything together at lightning speed. Now Variety reports that Amber Heard has signed on, while recent Oscar nominee Demián Bichir will be part of the movie too.

In the film, Danny Trejo reprises his title role from Machete, who is hired by the U.S. government to stop a nefarious arms dealer (Mel Gibson) from firing a missile. Amber Heard will play an assassin named Miss San Antonio. No details are known about Demián Bichir’s role. Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba also star.

Robert Rodriguez is directing from his own original screenplay, with shooting scheduled to take place in Austin, Texas, which is the hometown of both the filmmaker and Amber Heard.

Joe (Martin Compston) is a shy young man who seems somewhat scared of the grim London world around him. However his loving brother John (Neil Maskell) helps bring a sense of stability and happiness to his life, which is abruptly ended when John is savagely murdered.

Finding it difficult to come to terms with his loss, Joe is visited by an odd man called Piggy (Paul Anderson), who says he’s an old friend of his brother. Piggy is an avenger who knows the authorities aren’t going to do anything John death, and slowly works his way into Joe’s head, convincing him of the need to take direct action. Soon the two men are out on the streets looking for the five men responsible for John’s death. At first Joe finds it difficult to stomach the violence Piggy gets him involved in, but soon Joe get increasingly violent himself as his world begins to further unravel around him. [Read more…]

New Amazing Spider-man Trailer – Meet The Lizard

Sony has been promising it all week and now it’s here, the rather groovy brand new international trailer for The Amazing Spider-man, which gives us out best look at the movie yet, including the villainous Lizard. Earlier today the first official in-movie shots of the character were released (taken from the trailer) and you can see those below.

Here’s the latest synopsis: ‘One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man™. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theatres everywhere in 3D.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Klown Red Band Trailer – The very definition of NSFW

The Danish movie Klown hasn’t opened yet in either the UK or US, but has already attracted enough interest that Hangover helmer Todd Phillips and Danny McBride are planning an English-language remake. Now a very NSFW but also very funny red band trailer for the movie has popped up online. The film was spawned from a TV series, and follows Casper and Frank who are planning a party-heavy vacation. Their plans are thrown asunder when Frank has to take his girlfriend’s 11-year-old son with them on the trip. He’s supposed to be proving he’s a good father, but continues to party even with the young boy in tow.

Jody Hill Directing Dukes Of Hazzard Reboot

It appears Warner wants to breath new life into the Dukes Of Hazzard, although at the moment they’re not entirely sure whether to reboot it or not. THR reports that Eastbound & Down co-creator Jody Hill, who also directed Observe & Report, is attached to write & direct what is currently being described as ‘untitled action project set in the American South for Warner Bros.’

It could well turn into a Dukes Of Hazzard movie, but Warner is waiting until the script is ready before they decide whether to tie it into the franchise, so there’s a chance it could just be an unrelated film about an outlaw duo, set in the 1970s. The original Dukes Of Hazzard ran on TV from 1979-1985 and followed an adventure-loving pair of cousins in Georgia who drove a Dodge Charger nicknamed the General Lee.

Bill Gerber will produce, which should make things easier if it does become a Hazzard movie, as he produced the 2005 big-screen version that starred Seann William Scott and Johnny Knoxville. There’s no info on when the film might shoot or who could star.

Robert Pattinson To Track Down Saddam Hussein In Mission: Blacklist

After being thrust into heartthrob territory with Twilight, Robert Pattinson has been trying to show he’s a multi-faceted talent and doesn’t just have to play teen vampires. He’s got the strange intensity of David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis coming up, and now he’s heading into thriller territory with Mission: Blacklist.

THR reports that the film will follow the true story of the army interrogator who led the capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Based on Army interrogator Eric Maddox’s verbosely titled book ‘Mission: Black List #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein – As Told By the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture’, the film’s script will be written by Band of Brother’s Erick Jendresen, and directed by Jean-Stephane Sauvaire.

Interestingly while you’d think a film like this would be a military action movie, THR describes it as a psychological thriller, which suggests there’ll be a lot of Pattinson trying to break people down to try and find out where Saddam is hiding.

A Fantastic Fear Of Everything Poster – Simon Pegg gets scared in his underpants

A fun new poster has debuted over at Empire for Simon Pegg’s new comedy A Fantastic Fear of Everything. In the movie Jack (Pegg) is a children’s author turned crime novelist whose detailed research into the lives of Victorian serial killers has turned him into a paranoid wreck, persecuted by the irrational fear of being murdered. When Jack is thrown a lifeline by his long-suffering agent and a mysterious Hollywood executive takes a sudden and inexplicable interest in his script, what should be his big break rapidly turns into his big breakdown, as Jack is forced to confront his worst demons; among them his love life, his laundry and the origin of all fear. The film’s due out June 8th.
