Legend (Blu-ray Review)

January 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, Christopher Eccleston, David Thewlis, Taron Egerton
Director: Brian Helgeland
Running Time: 131 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 25th 2016 (UK)

There are quite a few people who don’t like the glamorisation (almost fetishisation) or The Krays and London’s East End gangsters of the 1960s, feeling these were nasty, vicious men and should be treated as such. If they were hoping this new biopic of the Kray twins would burst their legend, the title should have given them a hint that it wouldn’t (although it does also suggest the film knows it’s helping cement a fantasy of their lives).

Tom Hardy plays both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, with the movie picking up after the twins have already started making their name as gangsters, running nightclubs and operating an expanding protection racket. The film follows their continuing rise and fall, framed by Reggie’s romance and marriage to Frances O’Shea (Emily Browning). While their growing notoriety and the edge of glamour ensures they have the sort of high connections that gives them a certain amount of protection – and perhaps a sense of invulnerability – it also makes them bigger targets for those who would like to bring them down. Legend Trailer – Tom Hardy is the infamous Kray Twins, including the one who ‘prefers boys’

June 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

legend-slide1Tom Hardy pulls double duty in Legend, starring opposite himself as both of the infamous Kray twins, who rules the London underworld in the 1960s and became celebrities in their own right while doing it. Now a proper trailer has arrived, which you can see below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River) comes the true story of the rise and fall of London’s most notorious gangsters, Reggie and Ron Kray, both portrayed by Tom Hardy in an incredible performance. LEGEND is a classic crime thriller taking us into the secret history of the 1960s and the extraordinary events that secured the infamy of the Kray Twins.’

What hadn’t been clear up until now is whether the film would hide the fact that Ronnie Kray was bisexual (while some say he exclusively slept with men, he identified as bisexual), but the trailer let’s us now this will be a feature, with Reggie letting us know he ‘prefers boys’. Although him being so upfront about this may seem odd for the 60s, it is known that that he was pretty open about it, as he knew no one would dare say anything about it to his face – especially because, as the trailer shows, he was pretty nuts.

Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything, The Harry Potter series), Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) also star. Legend is released in cinemas across the UK on September 11th. [Read more…]

Thor: The Dark World (Cinema)

October 29, 2013 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins
Director: Alan Taylor
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: October 30th 2013

Thor – The Dark World is the 8th installment set in the Marvel’s Interconnected Universe, and this time the franchise has a new director, Alan Taylor, taking over from Kenneth Branagh, who did such a great job introducing Thor to the cinematic world.

So what do we need to know about Thor: The Dark World? Well, it delivers much the same as the original Thor – there are intergalactic baddies (Elves lead by Malekith – played by Christopher Ecclestone) trying to kill the residents of Asgard as well as the other nine realms. There are amazing backdrops to set the battles in, there are ridiculously over the top costumes, and massive body counts, rippling muscle and a good thread of humour running through the film. Thor: The Dark World Clip – Meet Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith

October 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s only a couple of weeks until Thor: The Dark World hits cinemas. One thing every good superhero movie needs is a villain, and that’s where Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith comes in. You can take a look at the evil character in a new clip below.

Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger (Chris Hemsworth), as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. To defeat an enemy that even Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor sets upon his most dangerous and personal journey yet, forced into an alliance with the treacherous Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to save not only his people and those he loves…but our universe itself.

The movie arrives in UK cinemas on October 30th, and is out in the US on November 8th.

Pre-booking starts in the UK tomorrow (September 27th) for Thor: The Dark World, and to help announce that, Marvel has released three new posters. One shows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane (Natalie Portman) looking suitably heroic in a variation of earlier posters. The second has Christopher Eccleston’s villainous Malekith, while Idris Elba’s Heimdall looks as moody as ever in the third.

Here’s the synopsis: Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery “ #83 in August, 1962.

New Thor: The Dark World Posters Unmask Malekith And Allow Chris Hemsworth To Pose

September 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-the-dark-world-poster3
Thor: The Dark World hits cinemas in November, and to remind of that fact, Disney has released two new poster showing off the good guys and the baddies, with Chris Hemworth’s Thor striking a heroic pose (while Natalie Portman looks worryingly like a blow-up doll), and another featuring Christopher Eccleston’s evil Malekith unmasking.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. ‘Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery “ #83 in August, 1962.’

The movie’s out October 30th 2013 in the UK, and November 8th in the US.

New Thor: The Dark World Pics Show Off Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston & More

August 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-2-empire-pic9
Empire has gone slightly Thor: The Dark World crazy, with four different covers for the film with their new issue. They’ve also a slew on new pics from the film, showing off the world of Asgard, along with the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander and loads more.

It’s also our best look yet at Christopher Eccleston under a load of make-up as the evil Malekit, as well as his minions.

And don’t expect everyone to survive this film, as director Alan Taylor has revealed,”You know, we are killing Asgardians in this movie. It turns out immortality isn’t all that it was cracked up to be.”
Hopefully that isn’t the reason Loki isn’t in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, as there will be a lot of angry fans if it is.

Producer Craig Kyle also spoke about how the events of Thor lead into Thor: The Dark World. “When the Bifrost was broken at the end of the first film, Odin had to conjure a lot of dark energy and go through a lot of personal sacrifice to try and get his son back to Earth,” he says. “And it was a one-shot deal. If Thor didn’t succeed, without the Tesseract he couldn’t have got back again. And in our film, finally the Bifrost has been rebuilt, but during that time, when the cops were largely cut off from the rest of the universe, you had miscreants that came in from outside the Nine Realms, pillaging and destroying and causing havoc. So that’s what our guys have been doing now – trying to put all these fires out across the Nine Realms.”

Thor: The Dark World is out November 8th, 2013.

Song For Marion Trailer – Terence Stamp gets grumpy with Gemma Arterton

September 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ahead of its debut as the London Film Festival, the trailer for Song For Marion has arrived. The film is a London-set comedic drama about grumpy pensioner Arthur (Terence Stamp) who is reluctantly inspired by his beloved wife Marion (Vanessa Redgrave) to join a highly unconventional local choir. At odds with his son James (Christopher Eccleston), it is left to choir director Elizabeth (Gemma Arterton) to try and persuade Arthur that he can learn to embrace life. Arthur must confront the undercurrents of his own grumbling persona as he embarks on a hilarious, life-affirming journey of musical self discovery. It may not be the most exciting sounding premise, but the cast is great and the trailer certainly make it seem worth a look.

Christopher Eccleston May Go Villainous For Thor: The Dark World

August 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Christopher Eccleston is one of those actors who always seems like they could have had a bigger share of fame, but for whatever reason decided to have an interesting and varied career rather than going all-out for the a-list. However now he’s up for a major movie role, as THR reports he’s up for a villainous part in Thor: The Dark World, which would mark his first movie since 2009’s Amelia.

Mads Mikkelsen was all set to play the part, however he had to drop out due to his commitments to the new Hannibal Lecter television show he’s set to star in. Little is known about the plot of the film, but the title could suggest that a good deal of the action could be set in the world of Svartalfheim and there are rumours the central villain would be Malekith The Accursed, the leader of the Dark Elves (which is who Eccleston would be playing if he signs on).

Shooting will begin this autumn, ahead of release on November 8th, 2013
