In the Heart of the Sea Trailer – You should see the size of Chris Hemsworth’s Moby Dick

October 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

in-the-heart-of-the-sea-poster1We’ve been waiting quite a while for In The Heart Of The Sea – about the true story that inspired Moby Dick – which shot last autumn but won’t by in UK cinemas until March next year.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure “In the Heart of the Sea,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex.

‘In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

‘“In the Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers,” “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

‘Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) also stars as young seaman Tom Nickerson, and Brendan Gleeson (“Edge of Tomorrow”) as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (“Riddick”) is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.’

Thankfully from the trailer it doesn’t look like this film will be as stunningly boring as Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. [Read more…]

Transcendence (Blu-ray Review)

August 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman
Director: Wally Pfister
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 25th 2014 (UK)

It’s always a shame when a movie that wants to be a genuinely intelligent slice of a-list entertainment fails. If one succeeds, Hollywood always treats it like a fluke, but if it bombs they point at it as proof that all that audiences want are big, dumb fireworks. What’s a particular pity with Transcendence is that it would probably have been better as a slightly smaller film.

Johnny Depp plays Will Caster, a scientist working on artificial intelligence who believes he’s close to creating a machine that will vastly outstrip any human intellect there’s ever been. However as there always is in this type of film, a group of terrorist-type people don’t believe in this type of machine and launch a series of attacks on facilities working on AI systems. That includes shooting Will with a bullet that doesn’t initially kill him, but is poisoned with a radioactive isotope that will cause him to die over the course of a few weeks. [Read more…]

New Transcendence Trailer – Fresh look at the Johnny Depp sci-fi

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In a couple of months we’ll get to see the very intriguing looking Transcendence. After a poster yesterday comes a fresh trailer with plenty of new footage from the Johnny Depp sci-fi.

And if it also brings to mind Inception, it’s probably little coincidence this is the directorial debut of that movie’s cinematographer, Wally Pfister.

Here the synopsis: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.’

Transcendence co-stars Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Kate Mara. The film is due out in April. [Read more…]

Official Synopsis For Johnny Depp Starrer Transcendence Revealed

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transcendence-preview-pic1There’s been a lot of interest in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer Wally Pfister. However Pfister has learned a few things about secrecy from Nolan, so while there have been bits and pieces about what the movie is about, there’s not been much official.

However now an official synopsis has been released, giving us some more info on the movie, which stars Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara and Paul Bettany.

Here is is: ‘Dr. The film is due out next April.

First Look At Transcendence – With a pic, poster & featurette for the Johnny Depp sci-fi

July 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transcendence-preview-pic1
There’s been a lot on interest recently in the fact Hollywood has been trying to find ways to make more money in China. It’s now the second biggest market in the world but presents particular difficulties due to limits on the number of foreign movies that are allowed to be released (and severe limits on how much studios can make from those releases).

The LA Times has been looking at how Wally Pfister’s directorial debut, Transcendence, has been working in China, and has also managed to get some Chinese funding, which may allow it to be classed as a Chinese co-production (and therefore potentially a lot more profitable in that country).

It’s also allowed us to get our first look at the Johnny Depp movie with a behind-the-scenes image (above), as well as a features and Chinese teaser poster. The Chris Nolan produced film is shrouded in mystery, but in the article, producer Dan Mintz says, “Without giving away too much, Transcendence is about that moment when human consciousness and the insanely fast rise of computing power collide. It pulls from the idea of singularity to tell a truly meaningful story that is more ‘science reality’ than science fiction. This is something that is likely to happen in our lifetimes and that makes it a story everyone can get into.”

Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins Jr., Kate Mara, and Paul Bettany co-star. It’s due to hit cinemas April 2014.

Broken (Blu-ray)

July 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tim Roth, Eloise Laurence, Cillian Murphy, Rory Kinnear, Zana Marjanovic
Director: Rufus Norris
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 8th 2013

Broken won Best Film at the British Independent Film Awards and got much praise on its cinema release. However I couldn’t help feeling it’s one of those movies where grittiness and being a bit of a downer is taken for it being ‘real’ and worthy. It’s certainly dramatic and very, very well-acted, but it’s still pretty contrived and looked at objectively, the events are fairly soap opera-ish. [Read more…]

Cillian Murphy Going In The Heart Of The Sea With Chris Hemsworth

June 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cillian-murphyChris Hemsworth has been attached to In The Heart Of The Sea for a few months, and now Deadline reports that he’s got some company, as Cillian Murphy has signed up to play the second mate in the whaling tale. Benjamin Walker has also been attached to star for a while now.

Charles Leavitt wrote the script, adapted from Nathanial Philbrick’s non-fiction book of the same name, which is based on the true events that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick. The story revolves around a Nantucket whaling ship that was destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. Only eight crew members were rescued alive, after being lost at sea for 90 days. Walker will play first-time Captain, Pollard, with Hemsworth as his first mate, Owen Chase, and Murphy as the second mate.

Ron Howard is set to direct, with Warner Bros backing the movie. The hope is to shoot the movie this September in order the fit into Hemsworth’s busy schedule.

Cillian Murphy Finds Transcendence For Director Wally Pfister

April 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cillian-murphyWhile it’s not unusual for a director to cast the same actor in several movies, it’s easy to forget that there are a lot more people on a set who famous faces work with, and if those crew members turn director, they may also want to work with those actors again.

That’s certainly true of Wally Pfister, who’s been the cinematographer on the likes of The Dark Knight movies. He’s already cast Batman star Morgan Freeman in his directorial debut, Transcendence, and now Latino Review reports that he’s also signed up Batman Begins actor Cillian Murphy.

There aren’t too many details about the movie, although it’s about Will (Johnny Depp), a scientist who uploads his brain into a supercomputer to create artificial intelligence. Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall and Kate Mara also star. There’s no news on who Murphy will play.

Jack Paglen wrote the script, with shooting due to kick off in the next couple of months.

Jennifer Connelly, Cillian Murphy & Melanie Laurent On For Cry-Fly

November 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jennifer Connelly, Cillian Murphy and Mélanie Laurent have all signed up for Claudia Llosa’s planned drama Cry/Fly. The project will mark the female director’s English-language debut. She previously made the Oscar nominated Peruvian film, The Milk Of Sorrow.

Cry/Fly follows two intertwining stories in Minnesota and northern Canada, which take place at different times. The first follows a mother (Jennifer Connelly) who is tragically seperated from her terminally ill daughter. The second happens 20 years later and follows her son. He is persuaded to search for his missing mother by a journalist. Doesn’t sound like a laugh-fest, but it could well worth watching.

Claudia Llosa will direct from her own script, with production expected to begin in February. (Source: Variety)

Red Lights Trailer

February 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Every year there are a ridiculous amount of movies about the paranormal, but Red Lights look more interesting than most, if only because the cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy and Robert De Niro, and it’s directed by Buried helmer Rodrigo Cortes. The film is about two investigators of paranormal hoaxes – the veteran Dr. Margaret Matheson (Weaver) and her young assistant, Tom Buckley (Murphy) – study metaphysical phenomena with the aim of proving their fraudulent origins. Simon Silver (De Niro), a legendary blind psychic, reappears after an enigmatic absence of 30 years to become the greatest international challenge to both orthodox science and professional sceptics. Tom starts to develop an intense obsession with Silver, whose magnetism becomes stronger with each new manifestation of inexplicable events. As Tom gets closer to Silver, tension mounts, and his worldview is threatened to its core. It’s due out in May, but now the rather intense trailer is here.
