Falling Skies – Season 3 has just started on UK TV and so to tie into that the second season has now arrived on DVD. The series is set after aliens have arrived on Earth and essentially taken over, harnessing teenagers with their technology and turning them into drones.

Most of the rest of the human population is either dead or scattered, but remnants have gathered together to try to either survive or fight back. This includes the 32 Mass, a ragtag military outfit plotting against the invaders, which also has a civilian contingent under their protection. [Read more…]

Set in southern China, a western man (Pierre-Matthieu Vital) is found naked by the side of a river. The police pick him up, but he doesn’t say anything – although it’s not clear whether he can’t or if he’s simply refusing. The doctors can’t work out what’s wrong with him and so decide to transfer him to a mental hospital.

A male nurse takes pity on him though, feeling this man isn’t ‘mad’ and so helps to liberate him from the hospital. Slowly we learn how the man ended up on the riverbank and the dramatic events that took place during his relationship with a young Chinese man. [Read more…]

The Wee Man (DVD)

July 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Martin Compston, Patrick Bergin, John Hannah, Stephen McCole, Clare Grogan
Director: Ray Burdis
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: July 8th 2013

Listen up you fuckers, the fucking movie The Wee Man is fucking coming to DVD. It’s full of Scottish gangster fuckers, killing and fucking murdering and swearing all the fucking time.

If you’re shocked by those two sentences, this is not the movie for you, as without very strong swear words this film would be about half as long as it is. Indeed you can probably tell how good or bad a character is by how many f-words and c-words are used before and after their names by other characters. [Read more…]

Stud Life (DVD)

July 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: T'Nia Miller, Kyle Treslove, Robyn Kerr, Simon Savory
Director: Campbell X
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 8th 2013

There aren’t that many movies about British black lesbians, so this film has an underserved and worthwhile subject going for it to start with. The film follows JJ (T’Nia Miller), a self-described ‘butch dyke’ who’s trying to find love and happiness in London.

She spends much of her time hanging around with gay best friend Seb (Kyle Treslove), who also acts as her assistant in her wedding photography business. JJ starts to date the more lipstick lesbian Elle (Robyn Kerr), although the road to true love certainly doesn’t run smooth. Elle is rather temperamental, takes umbrage at JJ’s friendship with Seb and has a few secrets about what she does for a living. [Read more…]

Broken (Blu-ray)

July 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tim Roth, Eloise Laurence, Cillian Murphy, Rory Kinnear, Zana Marjanovic
Director: Rufus Norris
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 8th 2013

Broken won Best Film at the British Independent Film Awards and got much praise on its cinema release. However I couldn’t help feeling it’s one of those movies where grittiness and being a bit of a downer is taken for it being ‘real’ and worthy. It’s certainly dramatic and very, very well-acted, but it’s still pretty contrived and looked at objectively, the events are fairly soap opera-ish. [Read more…]

Red Dawn (2013) (Blu-ray)

July 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Adrianne Palicki
Director: Dan Bradley
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 8th 2013

Red Dawn was shot in 2009, before Chris Hemsworth became Thor and Josh Hutcherson made The Hunger Games, but it got caught up in MGM’s bankruptcy, resulting in the movie only now arriving on Blu-ray and DVD. While there was a decent reason for the delay, the fact is that like many movies that have sat on the shelf for a while, it’s not great – although it could have been a lot worse. [Read more…]
