Pushing Dead (BFI Flare Review) – A dark comedy look at living with HIV, starring Psych’s James Roday

March 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: James Roday, Robin Weigert, Danny Glover, Tom Riley, Khandi Alexander
Director: Tom E. Brown
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: NR

Many people will know James Roday from playing the cocksure, mischievous character is TV’s Psych. Here he takes on a slightly different character, playing Dan, a man who’s lived with HIV for over two decades, but still feels the stigma and never tells anyone about his illness. The only ones who are aware are Paula (Robin Weigert), the sister of Dan’s former lover; and his editor, the gruff Bob (Danny Glover), who’s having marriage troubles.

Dan is having more than a few difficulties himself. He’s a poet at a time when no one cares about poetry, and when he deposits a $100 birthday cheque in his bank account, he accidentally goes over the incredibly strict bar for being on a low income that his healthcare plan enforces. That means that rather than getting most of his HIV medication paid for under his insurance, he suddenly needs to come up with $3,000 a month. Unsurprisingly, he doesn’t have $3,000. [Read more…]

Monster Trucks Trailer – Lucas Till gets a weird creature under his bonnet

November 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

monster-trucks-poster-slideMonster Trucks has been hanging around for a while, and the studio behind it has so little faith they’ve already written of a multi-million dollar loss on it. However, they’ve nevertheless given it a prime December 26th release date, in the hope of enticing kids while they’re out of school.

But while it may not be the hit they were originally hoping for, it does look bizarre enough that it might not be too bad.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp (Lucas Till), a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend.

‘Melding cutting edge visual effects and state-of-the-art CGI, Monster Trucks is an action filled adventure for the whole family that will keep you on the edge of your seat and ultimately touch your heart.’ [Read more…]

Monster Trucks Trailer – Or at least a monster in a truck, with Lucas Till

June 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

monster-trucks-slideI think it’s likely the title for this movie came before any idea about the plot, which may explain why the trailer suggests this is gonna be a bit of an odd movie. Not necessarily a bad one, but an odd one.

Ice Age’s Chris Wedge directs the movie, which will be in cinemas February 2017. Take a look at the first trailer below. [Read more…]

Richard Dreyfuss & Danny Glover Up For Killing Winston Jones

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Richard Dreyfuss and Danny Glover don’t get to make enough movies anymore, so it’s good news they’re teaming up for Killing Winston Jones, and according to Variety they’ll be joined by Danny Masterson and Jon Heder.

The indie dark comedy comes from a script by Justin T. Winter, which focuses on a sixth grade English teacher (Masterson) who is on a quest to get a recently built junior high gymnasium named as a memorial to his father… even though his dad’s not dead. Dreyfuss will pay Masterson’s not-so-late father, while Glover will play a rival who has his own plans for the gymnasium’s name. There’s no mention of what role Heder will have.

Who knew naming a gym could be so fraught?

Cameras start rolling Monday in Savannah, Georgia, with Joel David Moore directing. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s best known as an actor, who’s starred in the likes of Avatar and Dodgeball, as well as having a recurring role in TV’s Bones. He previously helmed Spiral.
