Coffee House Chronicles: The Movie (DVD Review) – Gay gays meeting & hooking up gets the anthology treatment

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Drew Droege, David Pevsner, Chris Salvatore, Nicholas Downs
Director: Stewart Wade
Running Time: 75 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 9th 2018 (UK)

Coffee House Chronicles was originally an anthology Youtube web series, but here the episodes get pulled together and slightly recut to turn them into a movie. While that may sound like a slightly cheating way to monetise the show, it actually works surprisingly well. As individual episodes they were quite fun, but pulled together thye add up to more than the sum of their parts, allowing it to layer together a light look at the way modern gay men relate to one another.

The film consists of a series of first encounters (mostly) between gay men, most of which – as the title suggests – take place in coffee houses. These meetings range from a man realising his ‘date’ is much younger than he’s said he was, to someone in a long-term relationship trying to organise sex with a porn star for his boyfriend. There’s also a trans man on his first date with a woman after transitioning, and two zombie extras in a movie figuring out if they want to go on a date even though they don’t know what they really look like under the makeup. Waiting In The Wings: The Musical (VoD/US DVD Review)

May 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Adam Huss, David Pevsner, Jeffrey A. Johns, Lee Meriwether, Rena Strober
Director: Jenn Page
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: May 3rd 2016

I’m still surprised that there aren’t more gay-themed musicals, but it is a notoriously tricky and expensive genre, so generally the low-budget world of queer cinema hasn’t made as much use of it as you might expect. However, Waiting In The Wings takes on the singing and dancing with gusto, and backs it up with minor gay-icon cameos from the likes of Lee Meriwether, Sally Struthers, Shirley Jones and Christopher Atkins.

Anthony (Jeffrey A. Johns) is a small town guy with dreams of making it big in musicals. He thinks he’s got his chance when he scores a role in a new, off-Broadway production and so heads from Montana to New York. Tony (Adam Huss) meanwhile is a stripper who thinks he might be able to take it to the next level as part of a new all-male exotic dancer revue. There’s a bit of a problem though – the same man is producing both shows and has mixed up their similar names, so the small, shy Anthony ends up being asked to take his clothes off, while Tony, who’s never sung before in his life, is now in a musical. Scrooge & Marley (DVD/VoD)

December 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Pevsner, David Moretti, Ronnie Kroell, Drew Anderson, Megan Cavanagh
Director: Richard Knight Jr., Peter Neville
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: December 1st 2012

There aren’t that many festive gay movies. We got Make The Yuletide Gay a couple of years ago and now along comes Scrooge And Marley. To be honest it’s almost a surprise that nobody’s made a LGBT-themed version of A Christmas Carol before. It is, after all, the most adapted single story in the history of cinema (there are more Sherlock Holmes movies, but they’re based on a variety of tales), so the fact there hasn’t been a proper gay take until now has been a bit of an oversight.

But now that we’ve got one, is it any good? Well, yeah, it’s not bad at all. [Read more…]
