Coffee House Chronicles: The Movie (DVD Review) – Gay gays meeting & hooking up gets the anthology treatment

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Drew Droege, David Pevsner, Chris Salvatore, Nicholas Downs
Director: Stewart Wade
Running Time: 75 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 9th 2018 (UK)

Coffee House Chronicles was originally an anthology Youtube web series, but here the episodes get pulled together and slightly recut to turn them into a movie. While that may sound like a slightly cheating way to monetise the show, it actually works surprisingly well. As individual episodes they were quite fun, but pulled together thye add up to more than the sum of their parts, allowing it to layer together a light look at the way modern gay men relate to one another.

The film consists of a series of first encounters (mostly) between gay men, most of which – as the title suggests – take place in coffee houses. These meetings range from a man realising his ‘date’ is much younger than he’s said he was, to someone in a long-term relationship trying to organise sex with a porn star for his boyfriend. There’s also a trans man on his first date with a woman after transitioning, and two zombie extras in a movie figuring out if they want to go on a date even though they don’t know what they really look like under the makeup. You’re Killing Me (Outfest Review)

July 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Matthew McKelligon, Jeffery Self, Drew Droege, Jack Plotnick, Bryan Safi
Director: Jim Hansen
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: NR (US)
Release Date: July 15th 2015 (Outfest)

You’re Killing Me sounds like a fun premise, perhaps for a short movie. Indeed, it starts off with what is essentially an entertaining short film. After game night with his friends, Andy (Matthew Wilkas) wants to finally have sex with his new boyfriend, Joe (Matthew McKelligon). However, Joe doesn’t want to, so in desperation Andy says he’ll do whatever kinky thing Joe wants to do. It turns out that what Joe really wants is to murder Andy – which is exactly what he proceeds to do.

However, after this fun beginning, You’re Killing Me has to find something to fill the next 80 minutes with, and that’s where the premise quickly starts running thin. [Read more…]

Where The Bears Are: Season 3, Ep 1 – The hairy boys are back for a new adventure

August 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

where-the-bears-are-s3-ep1In the last couple of years the web series Where The Bear Are has gained a lot of fans who appreciate the show’s appreciation of the type of men who normally get pushed to one side in our young, skinny, twink-obsessed world.

Now it returns with the first episode of Season 3, which once more showcases the larger, more hirsute gentlemen from the offset – and the ep. also has the added treat of a guest appearance from Drew Droege.

Season 3 follows the exploits of three gay bear roommates living together in Los Angeles, as they attempt to solve a string of murders involving young porn studio models. The season consists of 22 seven-minute episodes, with new episodes posted every Monday and Thursday. Season 3 is a romp through L.A.’s trendy neighbourhood of Silver Lake, and eventually reaches its climax in the first-class cabin of a jumbo jet!

Take a look at the new episode below. [Read more…]

Such Good People Trailer – Michael Urie & Randy Harrison are a gay couple with an unusual problem

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Such-Good-People-slideBack in late 2012 we covered the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the gay-themed rom-com, Such Good People. It’s taken a while but the film is now in the can and we’ve got a trailer, which you can see below.

Michael Urie (Ugly Betty, Partners) and Randy Harrison (Queer As Folk USA) take the lead roles as ‘A young, gay couple who discover a secret room filled with cash while house-sitting for wealthy friends… who die while out of the country’. So what are they going to do about it?

The great cast also includes the likes of Scott Wolf, Ana Ortiz, James Urbaniak, Drew Droege, Tom Lenk, Lance Bass and Alec Mapa.

The film premiered recently as the Miami Gay And Lesbian Film Festival and is now work its way out across the festival circuit. Hopefully we’ll all be able to see it soon. You can find out more over at the film’s website. [Read more…]

Help Screwball Gay Comedy Such Good People, Starring Michael Urie & Randy Harrison, Get Made

October 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Whether crowd-funding movies will work in the long run still isn’t clear, but at the moment it’s a great way for films that would find difficulty getting cash through traditional sources to get made. One such film currently looking for backers is the gay-themed Such Good People, and unlike many others, it already has a cast attached of fairly well-known names attached, representing the good and the gay of US entertainment.

Michael Urie (Ugly Betty, Partners), Randy Harrison (Queer As Folk USA), Lance Bass (N*Sync), Bree Turner (Grimm, The Ugly Truth), Jon Polito (American Gangster, Gangster Squad), Alec Mapa (Marley & Me), Drew Droege (Eating Out: Drama Camp), Mitch Silpa (Bridesmaids, Along Came Polly) and Broadway legend Sandra Bernhard are all set to star. The film is about ‘A young, gay couple discover a secret room filled with cash while house-sitting for wealthy friends… who die while out of the country.’

The makers are looking for $50,000, which is the bare bones of what’s needed to cover production costs, although the more cash they get, the more they’ll have to spend on locations and more time to shoot the film. Stewart Wade (Tru Loved, Coffee Date) is set to direct from a script by David Michael Barrett.

The makers says, ‘Our risks and challenges will be enormous. Even though that is true of every film production, at every budget, the smaller the budget the greater the challenges… We have something else, too: We have passion! And we believe that passion plus experience will equal a great little movie that will, with your help, come together to truly be something special.’

If you’d like to know more or give some cash, head over to Kickstarter.
