Elisabeth Shue & Andrea Riseborough Will Have A Battle of the Sexes Opposite Emma Stone’s Billie Jean King

March 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elisabeth-shueFox Searchlight’s Battle of the Sexes has been in the works a long time, but now it finally looks like its moving forwards. Emma Stone has been attached for quite a long time (although she was briefly replaced by Brie Larson when it looked like schedules wouldn’t work out) and was joined more recently by Steve Carell. Now Variety reports that she’s been joined by Elisabeth Shue and Andrea Riseborough.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

However Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world, took on the challenge, but lost to Bobby in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims. King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation. It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

Shue is set to be Riggs’ wife. It’s not clear who Riseborough will be, but the best bet is either Margaret Court, or one of King’s first girlfriends. Simon Beaufoy wrote the script, with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) set to direct.

Battle Of The Sexes is one of three films about the events doing the rounds, with HBO backing HBO backing Proof with Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti, and Will Ferrell attached to Match Maker. Interest in the match was reignited by a 2013 documentary, also called The Battle Of The Sexes.

January 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Disney is busy working its way through just about every classic animated movie it’s ever made in order to turn them live-action. 101 Dalmatians has already had that treatment back in the 1990s with Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil. Now though the House Of Mouse is having another go, this time with an origin story, to let us now how the fur obsessed villainess got to be the way she is..

Now the movie may have found its lead, as Variety reports that Emma Stone is in talks for the movie, which is currently going by the simple title, Cruella de Vil.

Not too much more is known about the movie, although it will be interesting to see with Cruella was always evil, or whether this will be a Maleficent-like tale that will show her to be misunderstood. Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote Cinderella and contributed to Maleficent, is writing the script.

Disney is currently looking for a director, with the hope the movie can go into production before the end of the year.

First Look At Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone In La La Land

December 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

La-La-Land-pic1

Are you ready for a musical with Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone? While many don’t particular think of them for their singing, they’ve both actually opened up their pipes numerous times on screen (after all, Gosling was nearly in N*Sync) and now they’ve teamed up with Whiplash director Damien Chazelle for La La Land.

The film is about a lonely, aspiring actress (Stone) who desperately trying to find her way in Los Angeles. She meets jazz pianist Sebastian (Gosling) and they quickly fall in love. However they soon realise that balancing their art and their relationship isn’t as easy as they thought.

Chazelle has said of the movie, “I’d like to make a contemporary musical about L.A., starting with the L.A. we know but slowly building to a vision of the city as romantic metropolis–one that is actually worthy of the dreams it inspires. I’d like to make a musical about the way L.A.’s peculiar rhythms can push its residents to the edge of their emotions – be they hope, desperation or love.”

The film is due in cinemas this summer, but take a look at the first image above.

Kate Winslet, Olivia Colman & Emma Stone Might Play The Favourite

September 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kate-winsletGreek director Yorgos Lanthimos got a lot of people interested in him with Dogtooth and Alps, and now he’s moved to mainstream talent with The Lobster, which stars the likes of Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz.

Now he’s planning his next film, and he’s lining up some great actresses to star, as Deadline reports that Kate Winslet, Emma Stone and Olivia Colman are all in talks for the film.

The film, called The Favourite, ‘follows the political machinations behind the scenes during the reign of Queen Anne, the last monarch of the House of Stuarts. The story takes place between the end of the 17th century and first years of the 18th century, when Anne reigned from 1702-1707.’

Colman would be Anne, with Winslet would be her confidante, Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. Stone meanwhile is in talks to be Abigail Masham, ‘an impoverished, distant relative of Sarah, who gains a position at court tending to the Queen’.

Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara wrote the script.

Irrational Man Trailer – Joaquin Phoenix & Emma Stone star in Woody Allen’s latest

April 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

irrational-man-emma-stone-joaquin-phoenixIt’s time for our first look at Woody Allen’s annual movie, and coming off the Oscar-winning triumph of Blue Valentine he’s brining us Irrational Man, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Parker Posey.

As always with Allen there aren’t too many details about the movie, but Phoenix will play a philosophy professor who’s suffering from an existential crisis which results in him wondering what the point of life is. However then – and this will be a shock for Allen fans – he meets a younger woman, strikes up a friendship, who changes his life.

It’s not exactly groundbreaking territory for Woody, and as so often in his films, it feels like Joaquin in playing an Allen analogue. Whether it’ll work this time around should become clearer soon as it’s due to premiere at Cannes in mid-May. [Read more…]

Steve Carell & Emma Stone Reuniting For Battle of the Sexes Movie

April 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steve-carellIt’s a battle of the Battles Of The Sexes movies, as just a few weeks after HBO announced Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti would star in their film about the famed match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, Deadline reports Steve Carell and Emma Stone will star in a rival movie for Fox Searchlight.

Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the script and previously Danny Boyle was set to direct, but he’s not mentioned in the Deadline report so may have moved on.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

These aren’t the only Battle Of The Sexes movies in the works either, as Will Ferrell has previously been reported to be working on a comedy version where he’ll play Bobby Riggs. However there hasn’t been any news on that film for some time.

Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling May Reunite & Gets Musical For La La Land

April 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

emma-stone-ryan-goslingIt seems Ryan Gosling’s self-imposed acting hiatus is over as just a few days after it was reported he’s in talks for Guillermo Del Toro’s Haunted Mansion, Deadline says that he may be re-teaming with his Crazy Stupid Love and Gangster Squad co-star Emma Stone for La La Land.

If he does it’ll be a chance for him to show off his singing skills (he is, after all, a former Mousketeer who nearly ended up in N*Sync), as it’s a musical from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle.

The film has been described as ‘an old fashioned musical set in contemporary Los Angeles and centers on a love story between a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress.’ Their passion is tested by the extremes of living in a city of creativity and dreams.

Neither Stone nor Gosling has signed on as yet, but both are said to be circling the project. There’s also been talk of Eddie Redmayne taking the male lead, but it appears Gosling is more likely at the moment.

Aloha Trailer – Emma Stone & Bradley Cooper star in Cameron Crowe’s latest

February 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

aloha-trailer-stillCameron Crowe sure does like to take his time. There was a six year gap between Elizabethtown and We Bought A Zoo, and while it seemed he was going to quickly follow it with a Hawaii set movie, it’s taken a bit longer than originally planned.

The movie shot back in 2013, but it’s only now it’s finally preparing for release.

Aloha is about a defence contractor (Bradley Cooper) who is overseeing the launch of a weapons satellite in Hawaii. He ends up falling for an Air Force pilot (Emma Stone), and together they secretly plan to sabotage the launch. Giving things a slightly sci-fi flavour, the movie also features mysterious island forces and a talking computer. Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel and Alec Baldwin also star.

The film is due out in the US in May, while it currently looks like the UK will have to wait until September. [Read more…]
