Sam Worthington, Noomi Rapace & Idris Elba Up For Alive Alone

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam WorthingtonIt’s going to be Prometheus meets Avatar although with a decidedly non sci-fi tale, as Idris Elba and Noomie Rapace, who starred in the former, are teaming up with the latter’s Sam Worthington for Alive Alone, according to THR.

Khurram Longi’s script has already had plenty of praise as it was included on the Black List and the UK’s Brit list of the best unproduced screenplays. The film will also be Longi’s directorial debut.

Elba will play ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee Jamal, who is now working as a taxi driver in New York. Rapace meanwhile is Sarah, a prostitute on the run from feared crime boss Murphy (Sam Worthington). When Sarah and Jamal’s ‘worlds collide, they unexpectedly find salvation in each other’.

It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Idris Elba Takes On Bastille Day As A US Operative In Paris

November 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Idris-ElbaIdris Elba is having a increasingly impressive transatlantic career, with the likes of Pacific Rim in the US and London detective Luther in the UK. Now he’s planning to span the Atlantic, as the British actor is heading to Paris to play an American in Bastille Day, according to Variety.

The movie ‘revolves around a U.S. operative (Elba) who is tasked with interrogating and eventually making a young American boy “disappear” in order to avoid embarrassment to the U.S. government after the boy is linked as the prime suspect to an attack on the Paris Metro. After several more attacks, the operative realises the boy is innocent and may be the only link to the person actually orchestrating the attacks.’

Andrew Baldwin wrote the script, although no director is attached as yet.

Pacific Rim (Blu-ray)

November 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky, Charlie Day
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Running Time: 131 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 11th 2013

There’s a saying in Hollywood that if a film is bad critics blame the screenwriter, but if it’s good, it’s the director who gets the credit. There’s a certain amount of truth in that, and it’s something that would be easy to do with Pacific Rim. The action scenes are terrific, it looks amazing and the world building is impressive, but the characters feel a bit like action figures.

The problem is that the film tries to create archetypes more than people – the hero with something to overcome, the damaged love interest, the grizzled commander, the arrogant  colleague who’s convinced the hero with fail. It’s a common tactic with big tentpole films, and writers Guillermo Del Toro and Travis Beachman have certainly been thumbing through their copies of Joseph Campbell’s Hero With A Thousand Faces to try and understand the archetypes they need to fulfil the hero’s journey – from being reluctantly called to action, to a flirtation with resurrection – however the result is characters that don’t feel quite real. Thor: The Dark World (Cinema)

October 29, 2013 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins
Director: Alan Taylor
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: October 30th 2013

Thor – The Dark World is the 8th installment set in the Marvel’s Interconnected Universe, and this time the franchise has a new director, Alan Taylor, taking over from Kenneth Branagh, who did such a great job introducing Thor to the cinematic world.

So what do we need to know about Thor: The Dark World? Well, it delivers much the same as the original Thor – there are intergalactic baddies (Elves lead by Malekith – played by Christopher Ecclestone) trying to kill the residents of Asgard as well as the other nine realms. There are amazing backdrops to set the battles in, there are ridiculously over the top costumes, and massive body counts, rippling muscle and a good thread of humour running through the film. Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba & Christopher Eccleston Get New Thor: The Dark World Posters

September 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-the-dark-world-uk-quad
Pre-booking starts in the UK tomorrow (September 27th) for Thor: The Dark World, and to help announce that, Marvel has released three new posters. One shows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane (Natalie Portman) looking suitably heroic in a variation of earlier posters. The second has Christopher Eccleston’s villainous Malekith, while Idris Elba’s Heimdall looks as moody as ever in the third.

Here’s the synopsis: Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery “ #83 in August, 1962.

Thor: The Dark World is out in the UK on October 30th and a week later in the US.

New Thor: The Dark World Pics Show Off Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston & More

August 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-2-empire-pic9
Empire has gone slightly Thor: The Dark World crazy, with four different covers for the film with their new issue. They’ve also a slew on new pics from the film, showing off the world of Asgard, along with the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander and loads more.

It’s also our best look yet at Christopher Eccleston under a load of make-up as the evil Malekit, as well as his minions.

And don’t expect everyone to survive this film, as director Alan Taylor has revealed,”You know, we are killing Asgardians in this movie. It turns out immortality isn’t all that it was cracked up to be.”
Hopefully that isn’t the reason Loki isn’t in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, as there will be a lot of angry fans if it is.

Producer Craig Kyle also spoke about how the events of Thor lead into Thor: The Dark World. “When the Bifrost was broken at the end of the first film, Odin had to conjure a lot of dark energy and go through a lot of personal sacrifice to try and get his son back to Earth,” he says. “And it was a one-shot deal. If Thor didn’t succeed, without the Tesseract he couldn’t have got back again. And in our film, finally the Bifrost has been rebuilt, but during that time, when the cops were largely cut off from the rest of the universe, you had miscreants that came in from outside the Nine Realms, pillaging and destroying and causing havoc. So that’s what our guys have been doing now – trying to put all these fires out across the Nine Realms.”

Thor: The Dark World is out November 8th, 2013.

Final Pacific Rim Trailer – Concentrating on the human angle

July 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The last couple of trailer for Pacific Rim have concentrated on the monsters, robots and action, and while there’s still a lot of that in this final promo, it also wants to remind us there’s a human side too. There’s also a fun vid featuring Ron Perlman as a monster parts salesman which you can watch below!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, and starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman, comes the sci-fi action adventure, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ PACIFIC RIM.

‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that took millions of lives and consumed humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots. But in the face of the relentless Kaiju, even the Jaegers prove defenseless.

‘On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.’

It’s out in cinemas on July 12th.
