September 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jake-GyllenhaalIt look like Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch may be going to war – over electricity. THR reports that the actors and in talks for The Weinstein Co.’s Current War, playing legendary inventors and industrialists, George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison.

The movie ‘takes place in the late-1880s and revolves around power titans Edison and Westinghouse’s battle over the supply of electricity. Edison championed direct current (DC) for electric power distribution over alternating current (AC), which was backed by several European companies and Westinghouse Electric.’

Gyllenhaal would be Westinghouse, with Cumberbatch as Edison.

The likes of Timur Bekmambetov and Ben Stiller have previously flirted with directing, but now Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’s Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is in talks to take the job. If he does sign on, he would helm the film after completing Collateral Beauty, which is due to shoot this autumn.

Heath Ledger Wasn’t Initially Considered ‘Macho Enough’ For Brokeback Mountain

August 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brokeback-mountainSometimes after a movie is made, it’s difficult to imagine any other actors playing the roles. That’s certainly true of Brokeback Mountain, but apparently at one point it seemed unlikely Heath Ledger would get the role of Ennis Del Mar, as he wasn’t considered ‘macho enough’ for the role of the taciturn ranch-hand.

The news comes from Oscar-winning screenwriter Diana Ossana, who was chatting about the film to mark its 10th Anniversary on the The Michelangelo Signorile Show. She said, “[Ennis] was the most difficult role to cast. And that seemed to be the perpetual problem as we went on. And even a little bit for [director] Ang [Lee]. Another actor had committed [to the role of Ennis] and we had suggested Heath. But the studio didn’t feel he was macho enough.

“I thought that was a rather odd comment. But we just sort of stuck with it. And when that [other] actor backed out — and he did, after three months — I called Heath’s agent…It was interesting. Early on, Ang had wanted both the boys to be lifting weights and get all buff. Heath said,  ‘You know, I’m the ranch hand [in the film]. I wouldn’t have time to be lifting weights. I’m kind of scrawny and young.’ He said, ‘I’m not going to do that.’ So he didn’t.”

Heath was right, at it would have seemed slightly odd if both Ennis and Jack looked like they spent all their lives in the gym and were almost a porn version of what ranchers are. But it’s certainly interesting to hear how things could have been.

New Everest Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal, Sam Worthington & Jason Clarke go mountaineering

August 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

everest-poster1-slideThere’s no doubt that things are dangerous when you go mountaineering, and that’s certainly true in Everest, which follows the events of what was the biggest tragedy on the mountain until the recent Nepal earthquake.

Now a new trailer has arrived, which certainly highlights those dangers.

Here the synopsis: ‘Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. The epic adventure stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal.’

Jake Gyllenhaal Circling Stronger, About Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor

July 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jake-GyllenhaalShortly after the Boston Marathon Bombing various people announced they were planning movies based around the tragedy. However, so far none has made it to the screen. One of the movies still working its way through pre-production and may have found a new star, as Variety reports Jake Gyllenhaal is circling the movie.

If he signs on he’d play Jeff Bauman, who survived the bombing but lost both legs. Jake’s not the only actor in contention but it appears he’s the favourite to land the part, undoubtedly helped by his excellent performance in another underdog tale, Southpaw.

Bauman had a central role in the story, as film will ‘detail the aftermath of the 2013 attack at the marathon finish line, where Bauman had been cheering for his girlfriend. A photo of Bauman moments after the blast remains one of the best-known images from the tragedy, which killed three and injured more than 260. When Bauman awoke the next day after surgeries and realized he could not speak, he asked for a pad and paper and wrote: “Saw the guy. Looked right at me.” That set off a massive manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was convicted of the murders in April.’

David Gordon Green is set to direct the movie, with John Pollono writing the script, based on a book by Bauman and Bret Witter.

New Southpaw Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal beefs up and gets into the ring

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

southpaw-poster1After getting skinny for the excellent Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal has been hitting the gym massively and beefed up to the max for the boxing drama Southpaw. Now a new trailer has arrived, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and starring Academy Award® nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (NIGHTCRAWLER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral.

‘His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos. Relentless and utterly committed to a fighter that thinks as much as he throws punches, Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it. Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on as he learns that, sometimes, your greatest opponent can be yourself.’

The film hits cinemas in July. [Read more…]

Everest Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal, Sam Worthington & Jason Clarke head for the Himalayas

June 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

everest-poster1Following the recent tragedy on Everest caused by the Nepal earthquake, the marketing for San Andreas was deliberately toned down. You have to imagine there were a lot of serious conversations about this one, which is based on the true story of the greatest disaster to hit the mountain until this year.

This first trailer certainly highlights the danger while saying little about the tragedy, and the synopsis glosses over it too.

Here it is: ‘Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Southpaw Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal gets ripped to play a boxer

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

southpaw-movie-pic1Believe it or not, this ought to have been Eminem. When Southpaw was originally put into development the rapper was going to star, with the story being a metaphorical take on his life. However after Eminem left the film lived on and now it’s Jake Gyllenhaal who’s got completely ripped to play a boxer in the movie.

Eminem is still involved though as a producer and it was through his Youtube that the trailer was released.
