The Miseducation of Cameron Post Trailer – Chloe Moretz is sent to a gay conversion camp

July 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Gay conversion is in the sights of the film industry this year, with two high profile movie’s about the controversial and much reviled practice due to arrive. One is Boy Erased, Joel Edgerton’s movie based on Garrard Conley’s memoir about how he was sent to a gay conversion camp as a teen. The other is the Sundance Grand Jury Prize award-winning The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which has released it’s first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the celebrated novel by Emily M. Danforth, The Miseducation of Cameron Post follows the titular character (Chloë Grace Moretz) as she is sent to a gay conversion therapy center after getting caught having sex with the prom queen. Run by the strict Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and her brother, Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.) — himself an example of how those in the program can be “cured” — the center is populated by teens “struggling with same-sex attraction.” In the face of outlandish discipline, dubious methods, and earnest Christian rock songs, Cameron forms an unlikely gay community, including the amputee stoner Jane (Sasha Lane) and the Lakota Two-Spirit, Adam (Forrest Goodluck). In creating a family on her own terms, she learns what it means to empower herself and have confidence in her identity.’

Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behaviour) directs the movie, which is due out in New York on August 3rd and Los Angeles on August 10th. It’ll be out in the UK on August 31st. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Gay Conversion Movie The Miseducation Of Cameron Post Wins Sundance’s Top Awards

January 28, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the best reviewed movies coming out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival is undoubtedly The Miseducation Of Cameron Post, and last night it picked yp the festival’s top award, the Grand Jury Prize. Set in 1993, the film stars Chloe Moretz as a teenager who ‘is caught having a sexual encounter with the prom queen. Cameron is then forced into a gay conversion therapy center by her conservative aunt and uncle, who are her legal guardians.’

Accepting the award, Moretz said, “On behalf of the entire ‘Cameron Post’ team we want to dedicate this to the LGBTQ survivors of sexual conversion therapy. We just wanted to make this movie to shine a light onto the fact that it is only illegal in nine states out of the 50 states in this country to practice sexual conversion therapy.”

Directed and co-written by Desiree Akhavan (director of the excellent Appropriate Behaviour), the film has been praised for its depiction of gay conversion, while ensuring the script is peppered with biting humour and a real interesting in understanding even the characters doing the ‘converting’. The film, which also stars Jennifer Ehle, John Gallagher Jr. and Quinn Shephard, doesn’t have a release date yet, but should be in cinemas later this year.

Moretz is well known for her support of LGBTQ issues, which partially stems from her having two gay brothers.

A Quiet Passion (Blu-ray Review) – Terence Davies & Cynthia Nixon explore the life of Emily Dickinson

July 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Ehle, Keith Carradine, Duncan Duff, Emma Bell
Director: Terence Davies
Running Time: 125 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 17th 2017 (UK)

Filmmaker Terence Davies early work was intentionally autobiographical. The likes of The Terence Davies Trilogy, Distant Voices Still Lives and The Long Day Closes looked at growing up working class in Britain in the 1940s and 1950s, touching on the overwhelming effects of Catholicism on him, as well as his own difficult relationship to being gay. Although his work then hasn’t been so explicitly based on himself, there have always remained very distinct echoes of the director in the subjects he’s chosen and the way he’s approached them.

That continues with A Quiet Passion, his biopic of 19th Century American poet, Emily Dickinson. Davies personal connection to the material is apparent from the first scene, where a young Emily is being asked to pick between two strict ideas of where she and a group of other young women stand in relationship to Christianity. However, she stands alone, unable to say where she should be. Once again Davies is fascinated by the push and pull of religion, of someone who wants the world while simultaneously limiting themselves to a small part of it, as well as the strictures of society for those who both desire to fit in and reject it. Fifty Shades Darker Extended Trailer – Jamie Dornan & Dakota Johnson are back getting sexy once more

January 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m not 100% sure why it’s been called an Extended Trailer, as it’s actually shorter than the last promo that dropped, but a new trailer for Fifty Shades Darker has arrived. It gives us some new footage as well as a listen to the title track from Zayn and Taylor Swift.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson return as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades Darker, the second chapter based on the worldwide bestselling “Fifty Shades” phenomenon.  Expanding upon events set in motion in 2015’s blockbuster film that grossed more than $560 million globally, the new installment arrives for Valentine’s Day and invites you to slip into something a shade darker.

‘When a wounded Christian Grey tries to entice a cautious Ana Steele back into his life, she demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance.  As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle the couple, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together.

‘Also returning from Fifty Shades of Grey are Academy Award® winner Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Ehle, Luke Grimes, Rita Ora, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini, who are joined for the first time by Oscar® winner Kim Basinger, Hugh Dancy, Bella Heathcote and Eric Johnson.

‘Fifty Shades Darker is directed by James Foley (Fear, House of Cards) and once again produced by Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Marcus Viscidi, alongside E L James, the creator of the culture-spanning blockbuster series.  The screenplay is by Niall Leonard, based on the novel by James.’

The movie will be in cinemas in February. [Read more…]

New Fifty Shades Darker Trailer – Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson get steamy again

December 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Fifty Shades movies are a peculiar phenomenon. The first trailer for Fifty Shades Darker broke the record for most views in 24 hours, but it’s a franchise that barely seems to register for those who didn’t immediately watch the trailer, with very people in between.

Now a second trailer has arrived.

Wilde (Blu-ray Review)

December 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Tom Wilkinson, Michael Sheen, Jennifer Ehle
Director: Brian Gilbert
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 14th 2015 (UK)

I’m almost surprised 1997’s Wilde hasn’t made it to Blu-ray in the UK before, but it’s now arrived, giving us an HD look at the biopic of legendary writer and wit Oscar Wilde, as played by Stephen Fry. At the beginning of the movie Oscar is already well-known and meets the pretty young Constance (Jennifer Ehle), whom he marries.

However, there is another side of him, initially brought out by Robbie Ross (Michael Sheen), that seeks the emotional and physical intimacy of men. Oscar begins to see it rather like the Greek ideal, where he is the older man, passing down knowledge to his ‘boys’, as well as sleeping with them. Then he meets the beautiful Lord Alfred Douglas (Jude Law), known as Bosie – and if you’ve ever seen pics of the real Bosie, he was very good looking – and the two fall for one another. [Read more…]

Spooks: The Greater Good (DVD Review)

September 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kit Harington, Peter Firth, Tuppence Middleton, Jennifer Ehle, Elyes Gabel
Director: Bharat Nalluri
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 28th 2015 (UK)

While Spooks (known as MI5 in the US) ended on British TV in 2012, it’s now been resurrected for the big screen with Spooks: The Greater Good. It’s certainly not necessary to have seen the show though, especially as it’s largely about new characters, with the main holdovers being the Secret Service setting and the presence of Peter Firth as counter-terrorism chief Harry Pearce.

Harry’s career comes crashing down around him after he makes the call to free dangerous terrorist Qasim (Elyes Gabel), after his prisoner transport is held up by armed men, which makes many people in MI5 feel he needs to be removed. He also becomes convinced that Qasim couldn’t have escaped without help from inside MI5, and so decides to disappear and go into hiding, in order to investigate. [Read more…]

Fifty Shades Of Grey – Unseen Edition (Blu-ray Review)

June 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Ehle, Max Martini
Director: Sam Taylor-Johnson
Running Time: 128 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: June 22nd 2015 (UK)

Anyone who knows me will be aware that there aren’t many occasions when I don’t know what to say, but as the credits rolled on Fifty Shades Of Grey, I really had no idea what to make of it.

It should come as no surprise by now to hear that Fifty Shades Of Grey is about young, naïve virgin Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), who is sent to interview the handsome billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) after her journalist roommate gets ill. Christian is drawn to Anastasia and begins to court her in his own singular style – where he is very adamant that he doesn’t do the girlfriend thing, or romance, or indeed typical human emotions. Kit Harington, Jennifer Ehle & Peter Firth Up For Spooks Movie

November 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Spooks (known as  MI-5 is the US) has been a big success for the BBC on the small screen, so much so that it’s now set to become a movie, called Spooks: The Greater Good. ScreenDaily has the news on the film, saying Kit Harington, Jennifer Ehle and Peter Firth are all signed up to star.

kit-haringtonFirth is of course a veteran of the show, and indeed is the only person who appeared in pretty much every episode us the tough but fair Harry Pearce.

Stephen Garrett of the film’s backers, Shine Pictures, commented, “We’ve set out to make a gripping, cinematic, contemporary spy thriller – one that builds on the history of the show and its legacy of questioning the world around us, but which also delivers as a standalone film for a new, global audience.” Harington will Harry Pearce’s protoge Will Crombie, who is investigating how a terrorist escaped from custody during a routine handover. As this is spook there’s also the threat of an imminent terror attack on London. Ehle will be head of MI5, Dame Geraldine Maltby.

Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent, who worked on the show, wrote the script. Bharat Nalluri will direct with filming set to kick off next Spring.
