Joseph Gordon-Levitt Also Up For Guardians of the Galaxy Lead

January 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Dark Knight RisesJust before Christmas we reported that Jim Sturgess and Chuck star Zachary Levi were the frontrunners for the the lead role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and now there’s another name to add to the list, according to Deadline, as Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also in the mix for the role of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord.

It may seem a bit soon for Gordon-Levitt to jump from DC’s The Dark Knight Rises to a Marvel property, but Joseph is a comic book lover, and while some have suggested he could follow up his Dark Knight role to become Batman in Justice League, there’s been little indication either he or DC is actually planning to do that.

Peter Quill is a NASA astronaut who learns that his true father is actually an alien, which leads him on a journey into outer space. With a sentient space ship, he becomes the Star-Lord, an intergalactic cop who serves as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

James Gunn is directing from his own screenplay, a release date of August 1st, 2014 is already set.

Zachary Levi & Jim Sturgess Vie For Guardians of the Galaxy Lead

December 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zachary-leviLast month, it was revealed that Marvel and director James Gunn had started testing actors for Guardian Of The Galaxy, with Joel Edgerton, Jim Sturgess, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne signing deals to try out for the role of Peter Quill.

Now Variety reports that only one of those actors, Jim Sturgess, is still in the running, with Chuck star Zachary Levi emerging as another top contender.

Zachary Levi’s inclusion is pretty unexpected as he took over the role of Fandral in Thor: The Dark World after Joshua Dallas was forced to bow out because of his commitment to the ABC series Once Upon a Time. If he takes the lead in Guardians Of The Galaxy, it would suggest this film won’t be part of the Marvel universe continuity the company has been building up (although they may think Fandral is a tangential enough character that it won’t matter if Levi is in Thor and then moves to Guardians).

The characters of Peter Quill was born as the son of a human mother and an alien father, who becomes an astronaut for NASA. After learning who his father was, he goes off into space where he transforms himself into the Star-Lord, an interplanetary policeman who serves as the Guardians of the Galaxy’s leader.

It isn’t known when filming on the movie will begin.

Joel Edgerton, Jim Sturgess & More Testing For Guardians of the Galaxy

November 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While most of Marvel’s Phase 2 plans involve continuing the franchises they’ve already started – Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers – they’re also taking a gamble on another superhero team, Guardian Of The Galaxy.

Now they’re starting to put the cast together, with Deadline reporting that Joel Edgerton, Jim Sturgess, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne have signed deals to audition for the role of Guardians leader Peter Quill.

James Marsden, Garrett Hedlund, and Sullivan Stapleton have also reportedly shown interest in the role, although it is not known if they are planning to audition. It’s an interestingly diverse bunch of actors, none of whom are household names but represent very different physical types and range in age from early 20s to late 30s.

Peter Quill is a former NASA astronaut who eventually comes to learn that his father is an alien, which leads him into outer space. Armed with a sentient ship and a suit that enhances his strength, Quill eventually transforms into the Star-Lord.

James Gunn is due to direct the movie, which already has a release date set of August 1st, 2014. When it was first announced, it looked like the movie would be CGI, but it now appears it will indeed by live action. There’s no news either on whether this will be tied into the other Marvel movies or stand alone (as Thor 2 takes the God to more realms, it could give an opportunity for an early crossover, but that hasn’t been confirmed).

Upside Down Trailer

January 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although it’s difficult to work out from this whether Upside Down will be good or not, it’s certainly an intriguin idea and from this evidence it’s going to be visually arresting. The film is a conceptual romance/sci-fi from director Juan Solanas. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Adam is a seemingly ordinary guy in a very extraordinary universe. He lives humbly trying to make ends meet, but his romantic spirit holds on to the memory of a girl he met once upon a time from another world, an inverted affluent world with its own gravity, directly above but beyond reach (each universe is in the sky of the other, able to see once another but not interact)… a girl named Eve. Their childhood flirtation becomes an impossible love. But when he catches a glimpse of grown-up Eve on television, nothing will get in the way of getting her back…’ No UK release date is currently set.

Joel Kinnaman Gets The Lead In Arthur & Lancelot

October 30, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The TV show The Killing seems to be a breeding ground for stars, with Mireille Enos is the upcoming Gangster Squad and World War Z, and now THR reports her Swedish co-star Joel Kinnaman landing one of the main leads in Warner Bros’ Arthur & Lancelot.

The film will be based on David Dobkin’s spec screenplay (he’ll also direct), which as the name suggests is a reimagining of the King Arthur and Sir Lancelot stories. It’s likely we’ll see a friends become enemies tale with them falling out over Guinevere.

Casting is still ongoing for the King Arthur role, with actors such as Kit Harington, Sam Claflin, Dominic Cooper, Hans Matheson, Jim Sturgess, Benjamin Walker, and Liam Hemsworth all in contention. It isn’t certain when the $90 million movie will shoot, but it’s already got a March 2013 release date set.
