Ellen Page Joins Laura Linney & Olympia Dukakis In Netflix’s Tales Of The City Revival

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last summer it was revealed that Netflix was hoping to revive Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City with original cast members Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. Now a new 10-part Tales Of The City mini-series has officially been announced, which does indeed have both Linney and Dukakis attached, and Ellen Page have been announced to join them.

Based on Maupin’s novels and stories, Tales Of The City was first turned into a six-part limited series in 1992. That spawned two follow-ups, More Tales of the City in 1998, and Further Tales of the City in 2001. They have become iconic slices on LGBT entertainment, following gay, straight and trans characters in San Francisco, living and connected to Anna Madrigal’s legendary house at 28 Barbary Lane.

Netflix’s official release says of the new series, ‘Based on the books by Armistead Maupin, this next chapter – Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City – follows Mary Ann (Laura Linney), who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.

‘Academy Award nominee and Emmy-, SAG- and Golden Globe-Award winning actress Laura Linney and Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Olympia Dukakis will reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal. Barbara Garrick also to return. Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Ellen Page will join the cast as Shawna.’

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new brand-new incarnation of Tales. It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane,’ comments Armistead Maupin. “Mrs. Madrigal’s tenants, both old and new, will be entangled in delicious new adventures and ever-expanding possibilities for love.”

“The magical, vivid world that Armistead Maupin built in Tales of the City is one that offered so many – particularly the LGBTQ+ community – a home for the first time. For many, Tales was the first time they saw themselves on screen,” said writer and showrunner Lauren Morelli. “I am humbled to now find my own home within Tales and to continue telling Armistead’s stories.”

More Tales Of The City May Be Coming To Netflix With Laura Linney & Olympia Dukakis Returning

July 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The mini-series adaptation of Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City is one of the iconic slices of LGBT entertainment in the US. The 1992 six-part show spawned two follow-ups, More Tales of the City in 1998, and Further Tales of the City in 2001. However, since then our screens have been devoid of the adventures of Mary Ann Singleton, Anna Madrigal, Michael Tolliver and co..

That looks like it’s changing though, as Deadline reports that Netflix is working on a revival of the San Francisco-set series. It won’t be a reboot either, as original stars Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis are both attached to star. It’s not clear if any of the other original actors will be back.

There’s certainly plenty of material for the show, as Maupin has written a total on nine ‘Tales’ novels, including three since the last mini-series aired in 2001. The newer books have focussed on the characters two decades on from the previous instalments, contrasting a San Francisco that was vibrant but suffering in the midst of the AIDS crisis, with the city in the 21st Century, when HIV has become a manageable condition (including for lead gay character Michael Tolliver), but many other things have changed.

It would also be interesting if it includes material the final book, The Days of Anna Madrigal, which includes her as a 92-year-old looking back on her teenage life as Andy, the son of a brothel owner in Nevada.

It appears that it’s very early days for the revival, but we’ll have to cross our fingers that it doesn’t get stuck in development hell and we see it on Netflix soon.

The Dinner Trailer – Richard Gere, Steve Coogan, Laura Linney & Rebecca Hall reveal their secrets

March 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At one point, The Dinner was going to be Cate Blanchett’s feature directorial debut, with Oren Moverman on scripting duties. However, she moved on and the adaptation of Herman Koch’s novel saw Moverman shift into the director’s chair. He’s an interesting choice, having written movies such as I’m Not There and directed The Messenger and Rampart.

In The Dinner, ‘Paul has no desire to go out to dinner with his brother Stan, a well-known politician, and his sister-in-law Barbara. But his wife Claire insists on him accompanying her. The couples meet at a hip restaurant but, in between each exquisite course, dark family secrets are brought out onto the table. The couples’ sons are responsible for a terrible crime — as yet undiscovered — and their parents must now decide how to deal with the situation. An argument soon ensues, since public disclosure would change the lives of each of them forever.’

Richard Gere, Steve Coogan, Laura Linney and Rebecca Hall play the movie’s main quartet. You can take a look at the trailer below. It’ll be in US cinemas in May. No UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

Sully Trailer – Tom Hanks is the Hero On The Hudson for Clint Eastwood

June 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sully-poster-slideCaptain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger is famous for something that took less than 10 minutes – crash landing the airplane he was piloting into New York’s Hudson, an miraculously saving all the passengers. That might not sound like enough for an entire movie, but there will be plenty more to it in Clint Eastwood’s Sully, which has just released its first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood (“American Sniper,” “Million Dollar Baby”) comes drama “Sully: Miracle On The Hudson”, starring Oscar winner Tom Hanks (“Bridge of Spies,” “Forrest Gump”) as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.

‘On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

‘“Sully” also stars Aaron Eckhart (“Olympus Has Fallen,” “The Dark Knight”) as Sully’s co-pilot, Jeff Skiles, and Oscar nominee Laura Linney (“The Savages,” “Kinsey,” Showtime’s “The Big C”) as Sully’s wife, Lorraine Sullenberger.’

The film is set for an Oscar-friendly December release. [Read more…]

Genius Trailer – Colin Firth plays the man who helped discover Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald & Thomas Wolfe

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

geniusGenius has been in the works for a long time – Colin Firth first attached himself to it back in 2012 – but it’s only now that it’s in the can and the first trailer for the movie has arrived. While a movie about a book editor doesn’t sound that interesting, as it’s about a man who helped the likes of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald get published, it’s certainly got potential.

The film doesn’t concentrate on either of those authors though, instead focusing on the birth of Thomas Wolfe as a literary force.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award-nominated screenwriter JOHN LOGAN (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo, Skyfall) and acclaimed, Tony Award-winning director MICHAEL GRANDAGE in his feature film debut, comes Genius, a stirring drama about the complex friendship and transformative professional relationship between the world-renowned book editor Maxwell Perkins (who discovered F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway) and the larger-than-life literary giant Thomas Wolfe. Based on the biography “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius” by A. SCOTT BERG, Genius stars COLIN FIRTH as Perkins, JUDE LAW as Wolfe, NICOLE KIDMAN as Aline Bernstein, a costume designer sharing a tumultuous relationship with Wolfe, LAURA LINNEY as Louise Perkins, Max’s wife and a talented playwright, GUY PEARCE as F. Scott Fitzgerald and DOMINIC WEST as Ernest Hemingway.’

The film will be out later this year. [Read more…]

Mr. Holmes (DVD Review)

October 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hiroyuki Sanada
Director: Bill Condon
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: October 26th 2015 (UK)

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a movie about an aging Sherlock Holmes would be about the famed detective back on the case solving a murder and recapturing his glory days, but Mr. Holmes is something slightly different.

Holmes (Ian McKellen) is in his 90s, living in a remote cottage after leaving his illustrious career behind 35 years before. His main company is his cook/housekeeper, Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney), her son Roger (Milo Parker) and the bees that he keeps. He’s not trying to recapture his glory days, he just wants to be able to properly remember them, as creeping senility keeps making him to forget things, including what really happened on his final case.

He knows that the ending to the tale isn’t what Watson wrote in his successful books about Sherlock, but he’s having trouble remembering exactly what it was that led him to leave his former life behind. [Read more…]

March 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment
