Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt & Ryan Phillippe Turned Down Brokeback Mountain, Says Gus Van Sant

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s difficult to imagine anyone except for Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger playing the lead roles in Brokeback Mountain, but it might have been very different. Before Ang Lee took over, Gus Van Sant was developing the film. However, he’s recently told Indiewire that one of the reasons he didn’t make the movie was how difficult it was to find someone to star.

He says “Nobody wanted to do it. I was working on it, and I felt like we needed a really strong cast, like a famous cast. That wasn’t working out. I asked the usual suspects: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ryan Phillippe. They all said no.”

It could have been a very different film with them, but before we cry ‘homophobia’ for their decision not to make the movie, Van Sant adds that he was angling to make a movie very different to what others involved were hoping for. He comments, “The original story, which was in The New Yorker, was so beautiful and simple, and Larry [McMurtry, screenwriter] had turned it into something that resembled ‘The Last Picture Show’. Which was really good if you were thinking along certain lines … I was thinking more like ‘Gerry,’ ‘Elephant,’ ‘Last Days.’ I kind of wanted to go back to the simplest view of the short story, which I couldn’t do … I didn’t really want to go and talk Larry and Diana [Ossana, producer] out of what they had created, because it was great.”

Ossana confirmed to Indiewire that those actors were approached, but was very diplomatic about why they might have turned it down, just saying, “Yes, all those young gentlemen (at the time) turned down the project, for various reasons.”

It’s also known that Mark Wahlberg was approached and turned the movie down. At the time Gyllenhaal and Ledger were up and comers, although it was still almost unheard of for a mainstream American film to cast two well-known heterosexual actors to play gay romantic leads in a movie. Indeed, it hasn’t happened that many times since.

Brad Pitt Joins Leonardo DiCaprio In Tarantino’s Manson Movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

March 1, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago it was revealed that Leo DiCaprio was reteaming with director Quentin Tarantino for his film that takes place in LA at the time of the Charles Manson murders. Now he’s bagged another big name he’s worked with before, as Brad Pitt has also joined the movie, according to Variety.

We also now have a Sergio Leone-esque name for the film – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Not too much is known about the exact plot of the film, except that it will be a, ‘Pulp Fiction-esque movie set in the 1969 Los Angeles during the summer of the Manson murders.’ DiCaprio is set to be former TV western star, Rick Dalton, with Pitt as his longtime stunt double, Cliff Booth.

Tarantino says of the characters, “Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor…Sharon Tate.”

He adds, “I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was 7 years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A., and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.”

The film will be released during August 2019, exactly 50 years after the murder of Sharon Tate by Charles Manson’s ‘family’.

Leonardo DiCaprio Signs Up For Quentin Tarantino’s Charles Manson Movie

January 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Leonardo DiCaprio must have enjoyed his time working with Quentin Tarantino of Django Unchained, as Deadline reports that he signed on to star in the director’s upcoming Charles Manson based movie. DiCaprio has been having a self-imposed career break, as he hasn’t actually filmed a movie since The Revenant. However, with the Manson movie expected to shoot later this year, it will mark his first film since his Oscar-winning role.

Not much is known about the exact role DiCaprio will play, except that he’s an aging actor in a ‘Pulp Fiction-esque movie set in the 1969 Los Angeles during the summer of the Manson murders.’ The exacty set-up of the movie is being kept under wraps, but it is known it will deal directly with the Manson murders, as Margot Robbie has been approached to play actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director ROman Polanski, who was brutally killed while she was heavily pregnant.

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt have also been circling the project, although it’s not known if they will sign onto the movie. The movie is due out August 2019, which will be 50 years since the Manson killings.

Will Leonardo DiCaprio Be The Joker In The Planned Origin Movie?

September 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a bit of intrigue in Hollywood at the moment. There are rumours that Jared Leto is a bit angry about the announcement that Warner/DC is working on an origin movie for The Joker. That’s because despite Leto playing the role in Suicide Squad and being attached to a couple of spin-offs, he won’t be part of this new, standalone movie that’s in the works.

Some wondered though whether the reason Warner wasn’t involving Leto was because the origina movie would be about a much younger version of The Joker/Jack Napier. That doesn’t seem to be the case though, as THR reports that the studio is attempting to woo Leonardo DiCaprio into playing the role, who’s only three years younger than Jared.

It’s not known how interested DiCaprio might be, but it’s suggested that one of the reasons Warner wanted Martin Scorsese involved as a producer is because it might make it easier to land the actor. THR adds that the, ‘chances of landing DiCaprio could be slim to none. But the attempt in itself sends a signal to talent that Warners wants to hire serious filmmakers to make serious films.’

The probability is therefore that Leo won’t be in the film, but it’s certainly an interesting possibility.

Leonardo DiCaprio Is Going To Play Leonardo Da Vinci, But Will He Be Gay?

August 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Leonardo DiCaprio apparently got his name after his mother felt him kick in the womb while she was looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in the Uffizi in Florence. It’s perhaps not too much of a surprise then that the now fully grown Leo would be interested in playing the renaissance genius in a movie.

His wish has come a step closer as Paramount has beaten Universal to the rights to Walter Isaacson’s upcoming book on da Vinci, which comes with DiCaprio set to star. The actor will also produce via his Appian Ways production company, according to Variety.

Not too much more info is known about the movie, such as whether it will be a complete birth-to-death biopic, or whether it will focus on just part of the artist and inventor’s rather complex life. It’ll also be interesting to see how it deals with da Vinci’s sexuality, as many people presume he was gay – but scholars disagree whether he was actively gay, or whether he was completely celibate (none of his writings shed much light on the matter). What is known is that he was charged with sodomy in 1476, although it was dismissed as the accusation was made anonymously. Some believe he may have had relationships with men before this but become celibate afterwards.

We will have to wait and see how it’s handled in the DiCaprio film (or whether he just becomes straight).

Leonardo DiCaprio Will Be Getting Involved With The Black Hand

February 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It looks like Leonardo DiCaprio is hoping to do some sleuthing, as he’s teamed up with Paramount to produce and star in an adaptation of Stephan Talty’s book, The Black Hand. It could be an interesting one as it’s based on the true story of man nicknamed the ‘Italian Sherlock Holmes.’

Variety reports that The Black Hand will be about, ‘the origins of the mafia in America’, following Joe Petrosino, ‘an NYPD cop who goes after the ruthless gang in the early 190os. The thugs (with the calling card black hand) migrated from Italy to America, and kidnapped people to extort money from their families. They were loathed by law-abiding Italian families who were frightened, but nevertheless helped Petrosino behind the scenes.’

There’s no news on when we might get to see the movie, and it might be a while and DiCaprio is known for taking his time developing new films. Hopefully it won’t be too long though.

The Revenant (Cinema Review)

January 14, 2016 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter
Director: Alejandro Gonazalez Inarritu
Running Time: 156 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 15th 2016 (UK)

2016 should be the year that Leonardo DiCaprio bags his first Oscar, while Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu picks his second for Best Director and Best Picture (following last year’s Birdman). As in the title of the film, DiCaprio is a revenant – a person who has returned supposedly from the dead.

Based on a true story, the premise of the film is one of revenge set against the backdrop of the bleak wilderness of America around 1820. Glass (played by DiCaprio) and his half-Indian son are fur trappers, whose party is attacked by a group of Indians intent on stealing their fur so that they can trade it with the French. The decimated party then struggle against the elements to make their way back to their base, whilst trying to shake off the Indians, who are intent on killing them and stealing the furs. The Revenant Tops The Golden Globe Awards, While Ricky Gervais Raises Ire With Caitlyn Jenner Joke

January 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

revenant-slieWhen the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hired Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globes after a three-year gap, you’ve got to think they were hoping for a bit of controversy. After all, all of his previous experiences has commenters asking whether he’d gotten too close to the knuckle.

This year the joke that raised many people’s ire almost inevitably involved Caitlyn Jenner, which Gervais delivered barely five seconds into the ceremony. He said, “I’m gonna be nice tonight – I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers. But, you can’t have everything; not at the same time.”

Oddly while many have decided it was transphobic, it’s not really, other than potentially the mention of her former name, as it fully accepts her as a woman. Easier to argue would be that it’s mysogynistic, as the real target of stereotyping is women drivers, or that making a joke about the fact Jenner was involved in an accident where someone died could be viewed as tasteless. However, just because it’s at Caitlyn’s expense doesn’t automatically make it transphobic, despite what some people would like to believe.

With the actual awards, The Revenant was the big winner, picking up Best Director, Best Actor – Drama for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Picture – Drama. Some have suggested this now perfectly tees the movie up to repeat that at the Oscars.

The Martian also did well, with Matt Damon picking up Best Actor – Musical or Comedy and Best Picture – Music or Comedy. That’s despite many wondering how the movie got classed as either a comedy or a musical, other than in terms of the studio knowing they were more likely to win if they entered it in those categories than in the Drama ones.

Jennifer Lawrence picked up her third Golden Globe for Joy in the Best Actress – Musical or Comedy, while Brie Larson for her first for Room in the Best Actress – Drama category. The latter suprised many, who though Cate Blanchett was going to win for Carol. Jobs also picked up a couple of awards, with Kate Winslet taking Best Supporting Actress and Aaron Sorking picking up Best Screenplay.

It wasn’t a particularly strong showing on the LGBT front, but Sam Smith won Best Original Song for Spectre theme Writing’s On The Wall, and Lady Gaga got a Best Actress in a Limited-Series or TV Movie gong for American Horror Story: Hotel (the Globes loves giving acting awards to singers, even Madonna has one). While the lesbian-themed Carol was hotly tipped going into the awards season, it was completely shut out at the Globes, and some feel it may also struggle at the Oscars

You can take a look at the full list of winners below, as well as taking a look as the fabulous way out actor Denis O’Hare tipped his hat to his American Horror Story: Hotel character with his Globes outfit. [Read more…]

The Revenant Trailer – Leonardo DiCaprio is left for dead in the American wilderness

September 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

revenant-pic1-slideAlthough there’s a lot of good buzz for The Revenant, with some saying it could have a strong showing during the upcoming award season, there are also plenty of stories of its difficult production, which went over-budget and stretched out for months longer than originally planned.

Whether or not it will bring Leo DiCaprio the Oscar many think he deserves we’ll have to wait and see.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. THE REVENANT is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award-winner Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel).’

It’ll be in UK cinemas January 15th. [Read more…]
