A Gay Golden Girls, Called Silver Foxes, May Be Coming To A TV Near You Soon

June 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a very long time, The Golden Girls has been beloved by many gay people, who love the sassiness of four older ladies and their chosen family. Indeed, many have said it’s a show that could be about a bunch of gay men without chaging the scripts all that much.

Now there’s a TV series in the works that’s essentially a gay version of Golden Girls, but with four older gents replacing Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia. The guys behind it, Stan Zimmerman and James Berg, even wrote episodes of the classic 1980s sitcom, as well as the likes of Roseanne and Gilmore Girls.

They’ve written the pilot for the show, currently titled Silver Foxes, and they recently had a table read to test out the material, where they enlisted the help of such luminaries as George Takei, Leslie Jordan, and Bruce Vilanch.

Interestingly, while talking about the show to Party Foul Radio with Pollo & Pearl, they said that rather than being directly inspired by Golden Girls, they got the idea after watching the PBS documentary, Before You Know It. That film follows the difficulties many LGBT people face as they get older.

However, even they acknowledge the Golden Girls parallels, saying, “Every one of us is getting older. Especially with gays and lesbians and transgender, we create our own families – and that’s what The Golden Girls did. Those women came together and supported each other.”

Zimmerman and Berg are currently pitching the show to various outlets, including traditional TV channels and online streaming services. As yet, it’s now known if any of them will pick up the series. We hope they will. [Read more…]

A Very Sordid Wedding (US Cinema Review) – Back into the mad lives of the residents of Winters, Texas

March 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Bonnie Bedelia, Caroline Rhea, Dale Dickey, Kirk Geiger, Leslie Jordan
Director: Del Shores
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 10th 2017 (US)

Del Shores’ Sordid Lives has had quite a life. It started out a play, before becoming a movie in 2000. The film quickly developed a cult following and spawned a prequel TV series in 2008. Now it’s gotten a sequel. While the likes of Olivia Newton John, Beth Grant and Beau Bridges from the original film don’t return, Bonnie Bedelia, Leslie Jordan, Lorna Scott, Rosemary Alexander and others all return for this new visit to Winters, Texas, where the people are still a little nuts, even if some of them have softened over time.

It’s 2015, and Ty (Kirk Geiger), who was coming to terms with his sexuality in the first film, is now legally married to a man. His mother, Latrelle (Bedelia), is still living in Winters, but isn’t quite as difficult a person as she once was, although she’s still got an edge when pushed. However, when she discovers she’s going to become a grandmother, she realises perhaps she’s still got a bit of a journey to go on to really open up her heart. [Read more…]

Has A New Season Of Will & Grace Been Confirmed?

January 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the stars of Will & Grace came back together for a mini-episode in support of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, there’s been talk about NBC being interested in bringing the show back for a 10-episode run. More recently Megan Mullally has suggested it’s close to happening, while Eric McCormack hinted that while the actors were up for it, they were waiting on NBC.

However, if Leslie Jordan is to be believed, the show’s return is definitely happening. Jordan played Karen’s social rival Beverlie Leslie in the series, becoming a bit of a fan favourite in the process, as well as winning an Emmy for the role. In a recent interview with radio station KPBS, the actor/comedian said, “It’s back! Here’s the way it works: [NBC] has ordered 10 [episodes]. It’ll be for next season, so they’ll go in in July.”

Although that sounds like pretty firm confirmation, we should probably wait for an official announcement before we get too excited, although Mullally’s recent comments have been very positive. However, as Jordan plays a side-character, while he’s probably been contacted, he may not have been involved in the final negotiations or party to decisions firsthand.

Southern Baptist Sissies (US Cinema)

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Emerson Collins, Leslie Jordan, Dale Dickey, Willam Belli, Matthew Scott Montgomery
Director: Del Shores
Running Time: 138 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: February 21st 2014

Normally filmed versions of stage productions are pretty tedious affairs. It’s very difficult to transfer the feel of a live production from stage to screen. That’s partly because they’re very different mediums and partly because if you’re having to shoot around an audience, it severely limits how it can actually be shot. That’s not to mention that stage acting often has to be bigger than screen acting and can come across as a little silly when removed from the theatre.

For about the first five minutes I thought this was going to essentially ruin Southern Baptist Sissies. As Emerson Collins’ Mark addressed the audience, it didn’t really feel like something that would work on screen. However then it all started to come together to create a surprisingly successful hybrid of stage and screen. [Read more…]
