Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (Blu-ray Review)

June 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Lily James, Sam Riley, Matt Smith, Douglas Booth, Jack Huston
Director: Burr Steers
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 27th 2016 (UK)

Jane Austen gets an undead mash-up in the film version of Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel, which took the original text of Pride & Prejudice and added in a whole lot of zombies. The movie has had a somewhat troubled history, with various directors and actors coming and going, and with the whole thing looking like they’d given up on it several times. However, finally Lionsgate got it in the can with Burr Steers (Charlie St. Cloud) directing and Lily James and Sam Riley starring.

As you would expect, the Bennet sisters are living in Hertfordshire, with their mother keen to marry them off to eligible men. While Lydia, Mary and Kitty seem keen to take any suitable gent, Elizabeth (James) is more headstrong and independent. While fending off the advances of Parson Collins (Matt Smith), she meets the exceedingly rich Darcy (Riley), who she takes an immediate dislike to, seeing him as rude, judgemental and unpleasant. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies UK Trailer – Lily James takes on the Jane Austen classic (plus the undead)

October 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

PrideAndPrejudiceAndZombies-poster1-slideAfter an eternity in pre-production, with an endless series of directors and actors coming and going, and the whole thing looking like it was going to be abandoned at several points, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is finally on its way.

The first UK trailer and poster have now arrived, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES is a fresh twist on Jane Austen’s widely celebrated novel. A mysterious plague has fallen upon 19th century England, the land is overrun with the undead and feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is a master of martial arts and weaponry. Casting aside personal and social prejudices, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy must unite on the blood-soaked battlefield to rid the country of the zombie menace and discover their true love for one another.’

Lily James and Sam Riley play Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, with Bella Heathcote, Jack Huston, Douglas Booth, Matt Smith, Charles Dance, and Lena Headey also starring.

The film will be released by Lionsgate UK in cinemas across the UK & Ireland on Friday 12th February 2016. [Read more…]

Cinderella (Cinema Review)

March 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: March 27th 2015 (UK)

After the success of Maleficent (2014) it’s little surprise that Disney is remaking some of their classic animated stories as live action movies. In a few years we will also have Beauty And The Beast and Tim Burton’s Dumbo (complete with a Danny Elfman soundtrack) and one day hopefully a version of Snow White where Peter Dinklage plays all the dwarfs.

To be honest though any studio can do these films as the stories are public domain (although Disney does like to bring in elements they have exclusive rights to due to them first appearing in their animated versions).

However what the other studios don’t have is the Disney magic. [Read more…]

New Cinderella Trailer – Lily James & Richard Madden only have until midnight

February 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

CINDERELLA-character-poster1-slideIn a few weeks time Disney will be unleashing it’s live-action take on Cinderella on the world, and it’ll be hoping it can really build some hype following an underwhelming response to the first couple of trailer.

To help with that, they’ve unleashed a new promo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

‘The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever.’

The movie is due out on March 27th, 2015. [Read more…]

New Cinderella Trailer – Fresh look at Lily James & Richard Madden in a more magical fairy tale

December 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

CINDERELLA-character-poster1-slideA few weeks ago the main trailer for Disney’s live action Cinderella emerged, but there was a bit of problem – for a film based on a fairy tale, it didn’t look that magical. Indeed it looked like despite his success with Thor, director Kenneth Branagh may have returned to the somewhat journeyman role that’s hampered quite a few of his movies.

However now a new trailer has emerged via Disney New Zealand, which suggest there will indeed be a bit of enchantment in the film, even if most of comes from CGI.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Helen Bonham-Carter & More Get Cinderella Character Posters

December 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

CINDERELLA-character-poster1-slideIf I’m being perfectly honest, the recent trailer for Disney’s live-action take on Cinderella was rather underwhelming and unexciting. It sadly seemed to lack a bit of magic. However there’s still hope that the final film can add that back in, and these character posts suggests the movie is pushing in the right direction.

The posters feature Ella played by Lily James and The Prince played by Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett and the Stepsisters played by Holliday Grainger & Sophie McShera, and The Fairy Godmother played by the amazing Helena Bonham Carter.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

Cinderella Trailer – Kenneth Branagh takes on Disney’s fairytale with Lily James & Richard Madden

November 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cinderella-pic1-slideDisney had a major success with Maleficent and will be hoping for similar with 2015’s Cinderella. Now the first trailer has arrived which suggests this will be a more traditional fairy tale adaptation, with director Kenneth Branagh seemingly trying to literally bring a Disney animated movie to life (although it’s obviously not a perfect recreation of the Cinderella cartoon).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A live-action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella” brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters in a visually-dazzling spectacle for a whole new generation.

The Bennet Sisters Get Armed In The First Pic From Pride & Prejudice & Zombies

October 31, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pride-and-Prejudice-and-Zombies-EW1After years in development hell, endless changes in cast and director, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is finally shooting. The film adapts Seth Grahame Smith’s book which took the text of Jane Austen’s classic novel and added in a zombie apocalypse.

It’s for that reason that in the first pic above, which arrived via EW, the Bennet sisters need to ensure they’ve got plenty of blades.

The pic shows Lydia (Ellie Bamber), Jane (Bella Heathcote), Elizabeth (Lily James), Mary (Millie Brady), and Kitty (Suki Waterhouse). They star alongside the likes of Sam Riley as Darcy, Jack Huston as Wickham, Douglas Booth as Bingley, and Matt Smith as Mr. Collins.

Burr Steers is directing with a 2015 release planned.

Sam Claflin & Lily James Up For Their Finest Hour and a Half

October 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sam-claflinHunger Games star Sam Claflin is teaming up with Lily James – who’s soon to become a much bigger name thanks to playing the title role in Disney’s upcoming Cinderella – for Their Finest Hour And A Half, based on Lissa Evans’s novel, according to Deadline.

The novel ‘follows the misadventures of a British movie crew trying to make a patriotic film to boost morale after the Blitz during World War II.’ It was very well received on its release, with Evans winning the Orange Prize for best book written by a female author.

Lone Scherfig (One Day, An Education) is set to direct the movie, which will reteam her with Claflin following The Riot Club. Their Finest Hour And A Half will look for buyers at next month’s AFM with the hope of filming in 2015.

Lily James & Sam Riley To Lead Pride & Prejudice & Zombies

August 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sam-rileyLike the main threat in its storyline, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies refuses to die, as after numerous casts, directors and screenwriters, a September shoot date has been set and Lily James, Sam Riley and Bella Heathcote are set to star, with Jack Huston likely to join them, according to Deadline.

The film rights to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies were sold back in 2009 when Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel was published. Since then helmers such as David O’Russell, Craig Gillespie and Mike White have come and gone, and everyone from Emma Stone to Natalie Portman has been up for the female lead.

Now though Lily James will play Elizabeth Bennett, with Sam Riley taking on the role of Mr. Darcy and Bella Heathcote as Elizabeth’s sister. Grahame-Smith’s book is a retelling of Pride & Prejudice, which keeps much of Jane Austen’s original text, but adds in a zombie apocalypse to give the classic love story an extra bit of zing.

Burr Steers directs, with the film expected to be in cinemas next year.
