Starring: Patrick Wilson, Matt Bomer, Liv Tyler, Marissa Coughlan, Jack O'Connell
Director: Jack Plotnick
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 6th 2014 (UK)

Space Station 76 is an odd but interesting idea. It’s a movie set in the future, but the 1970s version of the future, complete with bell bottoms, big hair and attitudes to sexuality and gender that haven’t fully gotten to grips with the sexual revolution.

Jessica  (Liv Tyler) comes aboard Space Station 76 and is immediately faced with suspicion due to the fact she’s a woman, and so people wonder why she isn’t at home making dinner and raising children. However that’s soon the least of her problems as she’s been dumped in the middle of a melting pot of fractured relationships, simmering resentment, and tortured sexuality. [Read more…]

Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler & Matt Bomer Head For Space Station 76

October 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not often a film with a pretty good cast can shoot and we only hear about it when production has wrapped, but that’s what’s happened with Space Station 76, according to THR. The likes of Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler, Marisa Coughlan, Matt Bomer, Jerry O’Connell, Kali Rocha and Kylie Rogers all headed for the set, to star in this homage to 70s sci-fi.

Jack Plotnick wrote and directed the movie. Plotnick is best known as an actor, who’s popped up in all sorts of things, from Meet The Fockers and Buffy to Reno 911! and Gods & Monsters. However he’s also built up a reputation as a playwright and as an acting coach, which helped him build the impressive cast for his movie. Despite the sci-fi approach, the film started out as a play that uses the the space station as a metaphor for his life growing up in 1970s suburbia.

Described as being set in a 1970s version of the future, Liv Tyler plays a new assistant captain whose arrival causes tension amongst the crew, while Patrick Wilson is the bitter and suicidal captain. Bomer is a technician with a robotic hand who is married to a manipulative woman, played by Marisa Coughlan. While Plotnick is gay, it isn’t clear if there are any gay characters in the movie.

Plotnick says, “People think that the 1970s were about the discos and the free love, but in the suburbs you were left feeling, ‘Where’s the party?’ So the emotional story is what I felt in the ’70s. My parents weren’t happy together and they stuck it out for the kids. It’s an homage to them. And in one way, I think we’re like these solitary ships in space trying to connect.”

The Ledge (Blu-ray)

April 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler, Terrence Howard
Director: Matthew Chapman
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 16th, 2012

There’s a lot of talent involved in The Ledge and you can understand what attracted the cast to this philosophical, high concept thriller, but unfortunately a script that’s muddier than it ought to be results in a film that feels as if it’s not living up to its potential.

Detective Hollis (Terrence Howard) is having a bad day, as he’s just discovered he’s infertile and that his kids are therefore somebody else’s. He’s then called to a dramatic situation where a man called Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) is standing on a ledge threatening to jump. While Hollis tries to talk him down, Gavin tells his story, which involves meeting the ultra-religious Joe and Shana Harris (Patrick Wilson and Liv Tyler). As Gavin is an atheist, their initial interactions are rather prickly, especially when Joe is openly homophobic to Gavin’s gay roommate, Chris (Christopher Gorham). [Read more…]

Liv Tyler Takes On The Side Effect

January 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Ti West has got quite a reputation for himself in horror circles for the likes of The Innkeepers and The House Of The Devil, but he’s going slightly sci-fi for his next effort, The Side Effect. Now Deadline reports that Actress Liv Tyler has signed on to star in the movie.

The film centres on Tyler’s character, Catherine Rigby, who spends several months alone in space, to test a pharmaceutical company’s new drugs. When the woman somehow becomes pregnant, paranoia sets in as Catherine begins to think she may be stranded in space.

Here’s what Ti West had to say about bringing Liv Tyler on board, “Although it is still somewhat of a horror film, it is much more psychological than any of my previous efforts. It was essential that I find an actress who could portray a wide range of emotion and always earn the audience’s sympathy no matter what the situation. As soon as I sat down with Liv, it was obvious she was the one.”

It isn’t known when the film will shoot.
