Michael Urie Doesn’t Agree With People Who Tell Him To Stop Playing Gay Roles

May 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There is a still a fear in Hollywood of getting typecast for playing gay, and that if you take more than one or two gay roles, you’ll be in a career cul-de-sac. It’s the same fear that stops a lot of famous folk from coming out – that suddenly you won’t be cast as straight characters (which of course is most roles).

However, Michael Urie has been playing gay roles on screen since WTC View in 2005, before becoming far more famous as a scheming gay assistant in Ugly Betty. During the run of that show he also came out publicly. Since then he’s played several other gay roles, both on stage and screen, including in thre TV show Partners and the indie movie Such Good People.

However, talking to Metro Source, he’s suggested that people have been telling him since he first became an actor, he shouldn’t have played gay or come out. He says, “When I first came on TV, there were people who said to me, “Don’t come out of the closet because if this doesn’t work out, you won’t be able to play straight roles.

“Even recently people have told me that I need to stop playing so many gay roles. But I just think: I work! I’m busy!”

He adds, “I do a lot of gay roles because they’re awesome! And because they’re different. I think the concern is being typecast as gay. But being typecast as gay is as silly as being typecast as straight. The idea that there’s only one type of gay character is an antiquated idea.”

Indeed, Urie thinks playing gay has actually helped his career, saying, “If I didn’t play gay characters – if I wasn’t out of the closet – I would just not work as much. You wouldn’t know who I was.”

Michael Urie To Star In Revival Of Harvey Fierstein’s Classic Torch Song

February 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy is undoubtedly a classic piece of gay theatre. The three-part play, which debuted in 1982, won the writer/star a pair of Tony Awards, got adapted into a movie in 1988 and has been revived numerous times. Now it’s coming back, with the announcement that Michael Urie will play the central role in a slightly altered version of the piece.

Fierstein reveals, via Theater Mania, “I’m thrilled that Second Stage Theatre will be reviving Torch Song Trilogy next season In conversation, I’ve been encouraging director Moisés Kaufman to look at the play with fresh eyes. I would never think of rewriting the plays but have given him a newly edited text that reconceives the way I want the story told. Theater is a living breathing entity and so are audiences. Even the most faithful stage recreations are tinted by the moment in which they are experienced. I’ve asked Carole Rothman to call the evening simply, Torch Song, and let’s see what truths we can preserve, what histories we can rediscover and what futures we can forge together. Living theater has always been my life’s goal.”

There’s no more info on exactly what changes might have been made, and/or why it will be getting a slightly different title. It may at least partly be a way to help the piece live on its own, as over the last 35 years, Torch Song Trilogy has become so indelibly linked to Fierstein, that others are invariably compared to him. There’s also a chance that while still set in 1979, Harvey wants to make a few tweaks to make it speak more strongly to the world today.

Former Ugly Betty star Urie will play Arnold Beckoff, who ‘is on a quest for love, purpose and family. He’s fierce in drag and fearless in crisis, and he won’t stop until he achieves the life he desires as a doting husband and a Jewish mother. Now, Arnold is back…and he’s here to sing you a torch song.’

Performances will start September 28th, 2017 at New York’s Second Stage Theater, with a late October opening planned.

Such Good People (US DVD Review)

April 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Randy Harrison, Michael Urie, Scott Wolf, Ana Ortiz, Carrie Wiita
Director: Stewart Wade
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 14th 2015 (US)

One of the ‘barriers’ to having gay people in films is that a lot of the time filmmakers and producers feel there has to be a reason for a character to be gay (and to be honest, a lot of audience members aren’t much better). Unless they’re a very minor character or we’re supposed to be laughing at their campery, an LGBT character’s sexuality has to be intrinsic to the plot or they don’t exist – something that’s not demanded of straight characters.

It’s always good then when a film comes along where with a few nips and tucks the two main characters could have been straight, but they’re not, and the movie doesn’t try to de-gay them by essentially treating them as friends who say they’re in a relationship but show no signs of it. [Read more…]

April 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Such-Good-PeopleIt feels like we’ve been waiting eons for Such Good People. We first reported on it back in October 2012 when the film was looking for crowdfunding. We’ve had the trailer since then, and now the film is getting is US release, and to celebrate we’ve got a great exclusive clip.

Breaking Glass Pictures is releasing Such Good People in the US on DVD and VOD on April 14th, 2015.  Such Good People is a gay screwball comedy starring Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), Randy Harrison (Queer as Folk), Scott Wolf (Party of Five), Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty, Devious Maids) and Lance Bass (N’Sync).

WTC View (VoD Review)

March 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Urie, Elizabeth Zapplow, Jeremy Beazlie, Nick Potenzieri
Director: Brian Sloan
Running Time: 102 mins
Release Date: March 3rd 2015 (US VoD), April 7th 2015 (UK VoD)

There aren’t many films that set out to capture a moment in time the way WTC View does. Set shortly after 9/11, the movie (and the play its based on) attempts to capture the fear, paranoia, anger, sadness, confusion and hope that came to those in New York after the towers came down.

A pre-Ugly Betty Michael Urie plays Eric, a young gay man who lives in an apartment that until a few weeks before enjoyed a view of the World Trade Center. He’s now broken up with his boyfriend and his roommate is gone, and Eric needs to find someone else to share his apartment with as soon as he can. While normally that wouldn’t be a problem, with everything in flux, finding a roomie proves difficult. [Read more…]

Brandon Routh Wishes He Was Still Playing Gay In Sitcom Partners

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brandon-routhA couple of years ago it looked like gay people were going to take over US TV comedy, with Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal (about a gay couple having a baby), and Partners, which saw a couple of friends, one of them gay, going into business together.

However neither of them got past their first season, and with Partners not all of the 13 episodes that were made got a network airing in the US.

There’s one person who’s still smarting about the cancellation, Brandon Routh, who played Michael Urie’s boyfriend in Partners.

He tells xfinity, “I had such fun with that character and working with the fabulously talented Michael Urie and David [Krumholtz] and Sophia [Bush] and Max [Mutchnick, co-creator] and David [Kohan, co-creator] and everybody. That was one of those that still, we were on the right recipe and such a good family.”

He adds, “I get people all the time at conventions a lot say, ‘Oh, Partners was so great.’ A lot in Canada because they got to see, I think they might have gotten a few more episodes than we (in the US) got to see. I hear from people on Twitter in South Africa where they got to see all 13 episodes, they released all of them there.”

Routh also talks about he’s grateful for his gay fans, saying “I appreciate the support from everyone. Thankfully, the world, society, is coming to a more rational thought process about sexuality.”

Brandon has recently joined Arrow playing Ray Palmer, aka Atom. You can check out a great image of him in costume here.

Michael Urie, Andrew Rannells & Jonathan Groff Slam Anti-Gay Russian Laws With Great Musical Parody

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A team of Broadway stars have teamed up to create their own protest to Russia’s anti-gay law, and being theatre folk, they decided the best way was with a fun musical parody. In the piece, Russia wants to shut down all theatre for being just that little bit too gay.

The fictional musical ‘Love And Punishment’ certainly has a powerhouse cast, including Michael Urie, Andrew Rannells, Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Stephanie J. Block, Joanna Gleason, Jackie Hoffman Laura Benanti and Roger Rees. It’s a show about same sex love behind the Iron Curtain, which doesn’t go down well with the Russian authorities.

It’s also a lot of fun, so take a look above. [Read more…]

Petunia Trailer – A great cast deal with family issues including a polyamorous Michael Urie

April 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Director Ash Christian certainly got a great cast of actors together for Petunia, including Eddie Kaye Thomas, Thora Birch, David Rasche, Christine Lahti, Brittany Snow, Michael Urie and relative newcomer Tobias Segal.

They’re all mixed up in a family drama that includes both gay and straight characters coming to terms with their complicated lives.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An off beat family of New Yorkers must come to terms with their own misgivings about life, relationships and the sheer unpredictability of love itself. Petunia weaves together the lives of brothers Charlie (Tobias Segal), Adrian and Michael (Eddie Kaye Thomas) as they unlearn everything their psychoanalyst parents have taught them. While Michael’s cynical wife Vivian (Thora Birch) discovers she is pregnant, the family is also changing. Charlie’s would be boyfriend George (Michael Urie) is in a polyamorous relationship with fitness fanatic Robin (Brittany Snow) and Adrian has developed a unrelenting sex addiction. Meddling parents Felicia (Christine Lahti) and Percy (David Rasche) must decide whether to reignite the spark in their relationship or start all over again. Petunia is a film about a dysfunctional family unit on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This is the story of how they pick up the pieces.’

It looks like it could be a lot of fun. Wolfe Video will be releasing the film in the US later this year. It’s currently playing at film festivals. [Read more…]

Gay-Straight US Sitcom Partners Gets Cancelled

November 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before the start of the new US television season there was much interest in two new gay-themed shows that were bidding to find success with audiences. Now one of them has been cancelled, with THR revealing that CBS has pulled the plug on Partners. Indeed it won’t even be allowed to play out its initial 13-episode run, with the instalment scheduled for Nov. 19th getting replaced by a repeat of Two & A Half Men.

The series, from Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, is a semi-autobiographical comedy about lifelong best friends and business partners, one of whom is gay, and the other is straight. David Krumholtz and Michael Urie play the friends, with Brandon Routh and Sofia Bush also starring.

CBS had high hopes for the show, giving it the coveted Monday at 8:30 pm slot, which had previously helped series such as How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly and 2 Broke Girls to find success. Partners struggled from the beginning though and when the last episode hit a series low, it seems CBS decided enough was enough, and now it’s gone.

The other gay-themed show, The New Normal, is still going, and recently scored a full-season order from NBC (before the season started, many had thought it would be this show that struggled, while Partners would be okay). That series stars Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells as a gay couple whose lives get mixed up with the single mother who agrees to be their surrogate.
