Oz The Great And Powerful Superbowl Spot – James Franco heads for a fantastical world

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s just about a month until Disney release Oz The Great And Powerful on the world, and they’ll be hoping for Alice In Wonderland style returns on their hefty investment. Now a short Superbowl spot has emerged, giving us another quick glimpse into Sam Raimi’s take on L. Frank Baum’s classic fantastical world.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting.

‘Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.’

Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful hits cinemas on March 8th, and just in case we didn’t think this new take on the L. Frank Baum tales was bright and colourful enough, some new pictures have shown up online of James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and co.

Matthias Schoenaerts Joins Michelle Williams In Suite Francaise

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts has been having success over the last few months opposite Marion Cotillard in Jacques Audiard’s Rust & Bone, and now he’s got a new project up his sleeve, as the Daily Mail reports he’s joined the cast of Suite Francaise, which already has Michelle Williams and Kristin Scott Thoman attached to star.

The film is based on Irene Nemirovsky’s novel, which she wrote (but never completed) during World War II, shortly before she was arrested and taken to a concentration camp, where she died. The novel was finally published in 2004 and praised for its firsthand look at the ever-changing situation for French people as the Nazis took over.

Michelle Williams will play Lucille Angellier, a young woman in Nazi-occupied France who falls for a young German soldier (Schoenaerts) while her husband is off fighting the war. Her only escape is playing the piano, which piques the interest of the soldier who was a composer before the war. Scott-Thomas is set to play Lucille’s mother-in-law.

Saul Dibb (The Duchess) will direct, with production scheduled to begin next spring in London.

Oz The Great & Powerful Full Trailer – Sam Raimi’s flick is looking incredibly fantastical

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As we were promised when the full banner poster for Oz the Great And Powerful was revealed yesterday, a new full trailer for the movie has now been released. It’s certainly wants to suggest this is going to be a fantastical, incredible looking movie, and as many have said, there’s more than a hint that Disney would like us to think of this as the new Alice In Wonderland.

It also interesting that they’ve kept the far distance looking oddly flat, which is presumably a nod to the pretty but painted on backgrounds of the classic 1939 Wizard Of Oz. However what’s more difficult to tell is whether the story is strong enough to compete with the visuals, and also whether the human characters can be fully integrated into a world that’s so reliant on special effects. We’ll have to keep out fingers crossed.

Full Oz The Great & Powerful Triptych Poster Arrives

November 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of grumbling and criticism of the Oz The Great And Powerful posters that have been released over the last couple of weeks. The first (the first third of the pic above) was said to be dumb because it didn’t include enough of the main characters. The second (the far right portion), was said the be too busy and like someone who’d just learn Photoshop had just had an orgasm.

However what the naysayers didn’t seem to be paying attention to, was that right from the beginning Disney said this was part of a triptych, so you couldn’t properly criticise it until we got the whole thing. Now we have just that, with the image above filling in the middle section, which gives us the main characters and better composition the moaners didn’t like – plus the Yellow Brick Road and Emerald City.

It’s a pretty packed image, keen to suggest that Sam Raimi’s film will be a visual feast. We’ll be able to get a better picture of whether the movie will live up to its fantastical promise tomorrow, as we’ve been promised a new trailer then. Until then, click on the pic above to see a larger version of the triptych poster.

Eight New Oz The Great & Powerful Pics Arrive

November 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

March seems an odd time to release a great big fantasy movie like Oz The Great And Powerful, but Disney had great success at that time with Alice In Wonderland, and while the March release of John Carter didn’t work out so well, they’re sticking with it for Oz. As a result they’re really getting going on the marketing, to ensure everyone knows its coming before Sam Raimi’s movie hits cinemas.

Now a octet of new images from the movie have been released many of which come from USA Today, showing us beautiful witches and James Franco having a chat with a china doll. Oh, and there’s a monkey bellboy too! There are also four pics showing off the beautiful fantasy landscapes, suggesting this is going to be a very beautiful Oz.

The USA Today articles also has Raimi talking a little about the movie, saying, “[Franco’s character Oscar Diggs] is mistaken for Oz the Great and Powerful, destined to be the next king of Emerald City. But he’s only to receive that title if he can defeat the Wicked Witch.”

He also comments on the pic of Franco and the doll, “Everything in the land, the houses and people made of china, have been broken by the Wicked Witch and her army. Oscar find the pieces of this china doll and puts them together, and hence the China Girl (voiced by Joey King) is saved. He’s telling her she has to go back to the Emerald City, where she’ll be well taken care of. But she won’t have any of it. He’s going to learn by the end of this scene that he’s not the only huckster in the bunch.”

Franco stars alongside Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. Expect it in cinemas March 8th, and a new trailer is due soon. Click on the pics below for larger versions.

Michelle Williams Checks Into Suite Francaise

October 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michelle Williams has a knack for picking interesting projects, which may not be fodder for massive blockbuster success, but which make for worthwhile films. She’s continuing that pattern as Variety reports she is in talks to star in the wartime drama Suite Francaise for filmmaker Saul Dibb (The Duchess).

If a deal is reached, the Oscar-nominated actress will portray Lucille Angellier, a young woman in Nazi-occupied France who falls for a young German soldier while her husband is off fighting the war. Her only escape is playing the piano, which piques the interest of the soldier who was a composer before the war.

Saul Dibb will direct from his own screenplay. Prodcution is scheduled to begin next spring in London.

Take This Waltz (Cinema)

August 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman
Director: Sarah Polley
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 17th 2012

I still can’t quite believe the little girl from 1980s Canadian TV import Ramona is now all grown up and an accomplished actor, director and writer. Take This Waltz is Sarah Polley’s third movie as a director, following All I Want For Christmas and the excellent Away From Her. In some respects it’s a rather standard story – someone is tempted to cheat on their spouse when something seemingly more exciting than the dullness of everyday marriage comes along – but what make it slightly unusual is that in this one it’s the woman who’s thinking of playing away.

Michelle Williams – who’s fast become one of the most fascinating and accomplished actresses of her generation, and also oddly interested with starring in movie about the breakdown of relationships – plays Margot, who meets the dashing and rather good-looking Daniel (Luke Kirby) while on a research trip to a living-history colonial fort.
