Straight Outta Compton – Director’s Cut (Blu-ray Review)

January 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: O'Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., Paul Giamatti
Director: F. Gary Gray
Running Time: 147/164 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 11th 2016 (UK)

Oftentimes having the subject of a biopic involved in the production ends up watering it down to the point it’s completely neutered. However, we should have probably guessed that wouldn’t have been too much of a problem for the members of NWA, who made their name by being honest about their lives and the world that they came from.

Even so, it’s taken a long time to get the project off the ground, and even just before it arrived, some wondered whether the subject matter would have genuinely wide appeal. However, with a great critical reaction and a gross of $160 million just in the US, it certainly defied expectations. It undoubtedly helped as well that the film arrived just at the right moment too, as the Black Lives Matter movement was rising and distrust of US law enforcement made the message of songs like ‘Fuck tha Police’ seem as timely as when they were first written. San Andreas (Blu-ray Review)

October 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Paul Giamatti
Director: Brad Peyton
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 12th 2015 (UK)

If you’d hoped that having Lost’s Carlton Cuse writing the screenplay would result in San Andreas being a more cerebral form of disaster movie, you should realise he was also an executive producer on Nash Bridges, so he is not averse to more straightforward entertainment. Indeed, it’s almost like he watched every Roland Emmerich movies – from 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow to Independence Day and Godzilla – and then used that as his template, but cut out anything too intelligent.

There is little to surprise here, although it certainly delivers on the large sale mayhem.

Dwayne Johnson is Los Angeles helicopter rescue pilot Ray, who’s dealing with the collapse of his marriage following the death of one of his children. However, he’s soon going to have more than that to worry about (actually, that’s not true as that’s all he cares about), when earthquakes start devastating California, starting at the Hoover Dam and then working its way up to San Francisco. And wouldn’t you know it, Ray’s daughter is in San Francisco, and so he sets off to rescue her, dodging city destroying shaking, tsunamis and general building destroying catastrophe along the way, as the San Andreas fault splits apart, resulting in the biggest quakes ever known. Final San Andreas Trailer Arrives – Dwayne Johnson takes on an earthquake

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

san-andreas-slide1After the terrible Earthquake in Nepal, it was quickly revealed that Warner Bros. was making changes to its marketing for the upcoming San Andreas, and that may be present here, as this new trailer lays on the pathos and horror of the situation far more than earlier promos, which invited us to enjoy the orgy of destruction.

It’ll be interesting to see which of these tones is closet to the actual movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.’

The movie will his UK cinemas May 28th. [Read more…]

Elizabeth Banks To Play Billie Jean King In HBO’s Battle Of The Sexes Biopic

March 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elizabeth-banksFollowing the success of the 2013 documentary Battle Of The Sexes there was a lot of interest in turning that story into a feature film. At one point Danny Boyle was planning to turn the tale of Billie Jean King’s infamous match against misogynist Bobby Riggs into a movie, and shortly after that Will Ferrell signed up to play Riggs in a rival flick.

Neither of those films came to pass, but now HBO has stepped up to the plate to get a film about the match made, and they’ve got a great cast to help, as Variety reports that Elizabeth Banks will play King, with Paul Giamatti as Riggs.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

However Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world, took on the challenge, but lost to Bobby in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims. King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

It’s not known if the HBO movie will cover that aspect of King’s life or if it will just stick to the tennis. David Auburn (Proof) is set to write, although it doesn’t appear a director is attached as yet.

Director: John Lee Hancock
Running Time: 125 mins

Cor blimey Mary Poppins! It’s 50 years since the Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke starrer arrived in cinemas, won the Best Picture Oscar and became one of the greatest family classics ever. However as Saving Mr. Banks shows, Disney’s attempt to get the character on the screen started a long time before the movies 1964 debut, as the character’s creator, PL Travers, wasn’t keen on selling the screen rights. Final The Amazing Spider-man 2 Trailer – Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan & Paul Giamatti unite against Andrew Garfield

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With fans already moaning that they thought there were too many villains in The Amazing Spider-man 2, earlier promos have concentrated on Electro and suggested it would be mainly him Spidey was up against. However this final trailer changes tack by concentrating on the fact it’s not just Jamie Foxx’s electro, but also Paul Giamatti’s Rhino and Dane DeHaan’s Goblin – and they’re all uniting against our hero.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

The movie is due in UK cinemas this April, with a May 2nd US release set. [Read more…]

All Is Bright Trailer – Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd reunite after prison to sell Christmas trees

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd are looking less than glamorous as ex-cons in All Is Bright, which has recently released its first trailer. It’s not your usual Christmas movie either.

Rudd and Giamatti are two French Canadian ex-cons who reunite after one of the is released from prison and travel to New York City with a scheme to get rich quick selling Christmas trees. Easygoing charmer Rene (Rudd) clashes with misanthropic ex-con Dennis (Giamatti), whose wife Rene just stole.

Parkland Trailer – Zac Efron works on a shot JFK

August 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination coming up in November, it’s little surprise a movie like Parkland is due out soon, which focusses on the hospital the President was taken to after he was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald (and where Oswald went when he was killed). Now the first trailer for the movie is here.

Billy Bob Thornton plays the head of Dallas’ Secret Service in the film, with Paul Giamatti as Abraham Zapruder, the man who took some infamous footage of the assassination (which many will remember from JFK). Marcia Gay Harden is the head nurse at the hospital, with Zac Efron as a rookie doctor who has to work on the President. Jeremy Strong plays Lee Harvey Oswald.

The movie’s US release has just been moved to early October, with a November 8th UK release currently set. [Read more…]

New Pics From Amazing Spider-man Debut, Including A Hint At The Sinister Six

August 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-preview-pic13
For the last few months there have been rumours that Sony’s plans for The Amazing Spider-man 2, 3 & 4 are designed to lead to the formation of the villainous Sinister Six, although there’s been no confirmation that this selection of bad guys will show up on screen.

However now we’ve got out biggest hint yet that this is what will happen, with an image of producer Avi Arad sat underneath a soundstage with the name ‘Sinister 6’ written on it. Although it’s unlikely to be a stage shooting Amazing Spider-man 2, it’s certainly not a coincidence.

It’s one of six new images from the movie, which arrived via Coming Soon, which also includes a fresh look at Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Stan Lee showing up for him cameo and Dane DeHaan on camera duty. The Amazing Spider-man 2 is out May 2014.
