Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Final Trailer – Plus news of a special fan event featuring new footage & a Q&A

September 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fantastic-beasts-final-poster-slideAt one point, Deathly Hallows was the end. Now we’ve got a new Harry Potter play – Cursed Child – playing in London, and the imminent film spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is on its way. The latter has now released its final trailer, which looks great – familiar enough to those who love everything Potter, while also promising something new.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.

‘“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.’

It’s also been announced that fans Will Be Treated to a Special Preview of New Footage From the Film in IMAX, and Can Be Part of a Live Interactive Q & A With the Stars and Director. The worldwide fan event will kick off on Thursday, October 13th, at 8:30 p.m. GMT (3:30 p.m. EDT, 12:30 p.m. PDT) and simultaneously in major cities in the U.S. and internationally.

Take a look below for the trailer and more info on a the event. [Read more…]

Take a look at the rather cool Comic-Con trailer below, which certainly manages to keep the Harry Potter feel, while also adding in a few new things (including an odd touch of Pokemon Go). Personally, I can’t wait! [Read more…]

Stonewall Trailer – Jeremy Irvine fights for gay rights in Roland Emmerich’s movie

August 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stonewall-trailer-slideIt’s certainly worth making a new movie about the Stonewall riots, as while most people have heard of them, even many gay people have no idea what actually happened, beyond the fact it’s the place where the modern gay rights fight is said to have started.

While this trailer suggests Roland Emmerich’s movie might have a slightly simplified take on the events of Stonewall (it is keen to say it’s inspired by events of June 1969, rather than being based on real characters), it still looks like it might be pretty interesting and entertaining.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘STONEWALL is a drama about a fictional young man caught up during the 1969 Stonewall riots. Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) is forced to leave behind friends and loved ones when he is kicked out of his parent’s home and flees to New York. Alone in Greenwich Village, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the local watering hole The Stonewall Inn; however, this shady, mafia-run club is far from a safe-haven.  As Danny and his friends experience discrimination, endure atrocities and are repeatedly harassed by the police, we see a rage begin to build. This emotion runs through Danny and the entire community of young gays, lesbians and drag queens who populate the Stonewall Inn and erupts in a storm of anger. With the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for equality is born.’

Joey King, Jonny Beauchamp, Caleb Landry Jones, Atticus Dean Mitchell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ron Perlman co-star. The movie is out in the US on September 25th. [Read more…]

The Book Of Life (Blu-ray Review)

February 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Ice Cube
Director: Jorge R. Gutierrez
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: February 16th 2015

Comparing The Book Of Life to Fifty Shades Of Grey may seem od, but there is one thing that brings them together – in my head at least. If Fifty Shades had been written by a man, I can’t help but feel it would have been thought of as horrifically sexist, and with The Book Of Life, I couldn’t help but wonder if some would have accused it of racism if it hadn’t been directed and co-written by people from Mexico.

I’m not necessarily criticising the film, but the movie doesn’t have many qualms about delving into Mexican stereotypes. However the fact is that behind the scenes it had a massive Mexican influence, not just from director Jorge R. Gutiérrez and co-writer/producer Guillermo Del Toro, but also many of the crew, who may infuse the movie with sombreros and bullfighting, but they do so with snarking or belittling, instead attempting to pay tribute to the rich culture. Jonathan Rhys Meyers & Ron Perlman Join Roland Emmerich’s Gay Rights Drama, Stonewall

June 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jonathan-rhys-meyersA couple of months ago Roland Emmerich promised he’d start shooting his gay rights movie Stonewall soon. Now he’s making good on that, as filming is about to kick off and more cast members have been announced.

Jeremy Irvine and Caleb Landry Jones are already onboard, and now Variety reports they’ve been joined by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ron Perlman and Joey King. Jonny Beauchamp, Karl Glusman, Vlademir Alexis, and Alexandre Nachi will also star.

The film will centre around Irvine’s Danny, a young man whose political awakening happens against the backdrop of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which have since become a touchstone for the gay rights struggle. Caleb Landry Jones will play an eccentric gay street hustler named Orphan Annie who at first resists then warms up to Danny and later participates in the Stonewall uprising.

It’s not clear who the other actors will play. Shooting is starting now in New York.

Guillermo Del Toro & Ron Perlman Float The Possibility Of Hellboy 3

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hellboy-pic1Hellboy has been a bit of an unfortunate franchise, as while everyone who’s seen the two Guillermo Del Toro movies seems to have liked them, they didn’t make much money. Indeed, between the first and second movie it moved from Sony Pictures to Universal, as the former didn’t want to pay for a follow-up, having barely broken even on the first.

Since Hellboy II there’s been talk of a third film, but generally it’s been with more hope than with any sense it might actually happen. However now there’s a glimmer that it might actually happen, as Del Toro and star Ron Perlman have been talking about the possibility of Hellboy III.

Del Toro told ShockTilYouDrop, “I hate giving pieces away about it, but last night, we were at dinner and Ron said, ‘I would be happy to do Hellboy again, when are we doing Hellboy 3?’ Thomas [Tull, Legendary Pictures’ Founder and CEO] said, ‘I would love to see Hellboy 3.’ He didn’t say he would love to do it; he just said he’d like to see it, but today, I’ll ask him.”

It’s certainly more hopeful that when Del Toro last talked about the possibility of a franchise, when he said the idea was pretty much dead, partly because Ron Perlman had suggested he didn’t want to do it because of the heavy and uncomfortable prosthetics work involved.

However Perlman seems to have had a change of heart, saying, “I loved working for Legendary, and I know for Guillermo, working on Pacific Rim was one of his greatest experiences. The reason I loved working for them is because Guillermo was so happy. I came in six months into the shoot and he seemed as fresh as a daisy, simply because he was working for someone who appreciated and supported his outlandish visions of what he wanted to put on the screen. My immediate, silent wish was, wouldn’t it be great if these guys came in and helped resolve the Hellboy series.”

However can Legendary, the company behind the likes of Pacific Rim, Man Of Steel and the Dark Knight movies, actually get it off the ground? Legendary’s Tull later responded by saying, “There are rights issues that would need to be sorted out for Legendary to get involved.” It certainly sounds like he’s interested, even if he doesn’t want to say anything that sounds like a commitment.

Don’t get too excited yet, but it does appear the idea of Hellboy III is more likely than it has been for several years.

Frankie Go Boom (DVD)

March 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Chris O'Dowd, Lizzy Caplan, Chris Noth, Ron Perlman
Director: Jordan Roberts
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 25th 2013

Farce is a tough thing to get right even if you follow all the rules. Frankie Go Boom gets very close to being great – the actors are good (and appear to be having a lot of fun) and many of the scenes are very funny. However it ultimately falls foul of the problem that causes many farces to come a cropper – it’s actively nonsensical, which is rather frustrating.

Frankie (Charlie Hunnam) is used to being made a laughing stock by his older brother, Bruce (Chris O’Dowd). For example, Bruce put Frankie’s wedding video on the web, even though it featured Frankie discovering his wife-to-be was cheating on him, before he punches and then vomits on her. Unsurprisingly it was a viral sensation. [Read more…]

Drive (DVD)

January 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Ryan Gosling
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn, Ryan Gosling
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 30th. 2012

The release date of Drive deliberately seems to have set in the hope the movie would pick up a few Oscar nominations. While it only managed one – for Sound Editing – the film might well have been helped by the outrage many have expressed about the Academy pretty much ignoring it.

Ryan Gosling plays a Hollywood stunt driver, mechanic and getaway driver who strikes up a friendship/chaste romance with a young mother called Irene (Carey Mulligan), whose husband is in prison. When the hubby is released from jail, the driver agrees to help him with a robbery, in the hope this will ensure Irene and her son remain safe. However when things go wrong, it sets off an increasingly violent chain of events, with the driver’s life and that of everyone around him at threat from gangland heavies, including the brutal Nino (Ron Perlman) and gangster turned movie producer Bernie (Albert Brooks) [Read more…]
