Carol Teaser Trailer – The lesbian-themed Cate Blanchett starrer will also get a London Film Festival gala

August 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Carol-cate-blanchett-slideAfter receiving huge amounts of positive buzz at the Cannes film festival (with some suggesting it could be a strong runner in the Oscar race), Carol is gearing up for release later this year. Something that will help keep it in people’s minds if the fact it’s been announced that Todd Haynes’ beautiful 1950s set drama will screen as the American Express Gala and the 59th BFI London Film Festival.

The film will receive its UK Premiere on Wednesday 14th October at the Odeon Leicester Square, attended by Academy Award nominated director Todd Haynes and the film’s stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

‘While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol’s involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.Based on Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel, The Price of Salt, adapted by Emmy nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy, directed by Todd Haynes, CAROL stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Sarah Paulson.’

Will Smith Takes On Collateral Beauty, Replacing Hugh Jackman

August 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smithWill Smith is the new Hugh Jackman, or at least he is in Collateral Beauty, as Deadline reports that Smith is in talks to replace the Aussie star, who dropped out of the lead role a few weeks ago.

Johnny Depp was previously rumoured to be in the frame, but it’s now gone to Will.

Rooney Mara and Jason Segel are still attached to the movie, which is, ‘about a New York advertising executive (Jackman) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. When his colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, the plan works, but not in a way that anyone imagined’.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon will helm the movie, which should shoot later this year.

Pan Trailer – Hugh Jackman & Garrett Hedlund are going to Neverland

July 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pan-main-poster-slideEarlier promos for Warner’s upcoming Peter Pan prequel have been rather underwhelming, largely because the whole thing looked like a rather shoddy cartoon. However it looks like they’ve been using the fact the release was delayed from Summer to October 2015 to work on the special effects and make the whole thing look a little less plastic.

This new trailer certainly looks a lot better and suggests this might actually be a decent movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures comes, “Pan,” a live-action Peter Pan feature directed by Joe Wright (“Atonement,” “Pride & Prejudice”).

‘Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the action adventure follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

‘The film stars Oscar® nominee Hugh Jackman (“Les Misérables”) as Blackbeard; Garrett Hedlund (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) as Hook; Oscar® nominee Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) as Tiger Lily; Adeel Akhtar (“The Dictator”) as Smee; and newcomer Levi Miller as Peter.

‘Amanda Seyfried (“Les Misérables”) rounds out the cast as Mary, alongside Jack Charles (“Mystery Road”) as The Chief/Tiger Lily’s father; Taejoo Na (“The Kick”) as Kwahu; Nonso Anozie (“Son of God,” “Atonement”) as Bishop; Kathy Burke (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) as Mother Barnabas; Kurt Egyiawan (“Skyfall”) as Murray; Lewis MacDougall (UK TV’s “In the Name of the Children”) as Nibs; and newcomer Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling.’ [Read more…]

Jason Segel Will Have Collateral Beauty Alongside Hugh Jackman & Rooney Mara

June 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-segelLast week it was revealed that Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara had taken the lead roles in Collateral Beauty, with Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) set to direct. Now another actor is in talks for the movie, as Jason Segel is circling the film, according to Variety.

Collateral Beauty is ‘about a New York advertising executive (Jackman) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. When his colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, the plan works, but not in a way that anyone imagined’.

It’s not clear who Segel will play, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s one of the colleagues trying to help Jackman out.

Allan Loeb wrote the script, with plans to shoot the movie this autumn.

Hugh Jackman & Rooney Mara Have Collateral Beauty

hugh-jackman-x-men-days-of-future-past-slideIt always helps to sell a script in Hollywood is it comes with come big names attached, and that probably aided Collateral Beauty, which has been picked up by Palmstar Media, with Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara already set to start, according to Variety.

There’s also a director onboard, with Me and Earl and the Dying Girl helmer Alfonso Gomez-Rejon attached.

Trash (Blu-ray Review)

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen, Wagner Moura, Selton Mello
Director: Stephen Daldry
Running Time: 114 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 8th 2015 (UK)

I’d like to think that when putting Trash together the people behind it weren’t sitting there purely trying to think what would be most likely to win them lots of Oscars, but it does slightly come across like that at times. You’ve got a setting that is Slumdog Millionaire meets City of God, a plot that’s somewhat gritty but also a bit of a fairytale, a director who’s already got three Best Director Oscar nominations under his belt (Stephen Daldry), a script from Richard ‘Four Weddings’ Curtis and the lead roles given to sweet, non-professional Brazilian kids.

If they were hoping for Oscars, they failed, but the movie isn’t bad at all, using its semi-fairytale story to create something that is sort of a family/young adult film, but one that wants viewers young and old to know that the slums can be a dark and dangerous place, and that children aren’t immune from that. New Pan Trailer – Hugh Jackman & Garrett Hedlund head for Neverland

May 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pan-poster3When the first Pan trailer arrived last November it was the start of a campaign that was supposed to see the movie arrive in cinemas this July. However Warner decided that as it had a pretty packed summer it would move it back to October, and so this new trailer is essentially trying to start up the hype all over again.

The promo suggests this will be a more traditional family fantasy than some of the darker takes on classic tales we’ve had recently, although I’m hoping that by the time it reaches cinemas the CGI won’t look quite Polar Express animation.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the action adventure follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. Cate Blanchett’s Lesbian-Themed Drama Carol Tipped For Cannes Palm d’Or

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Carol-cate-blanchett-slideThere have been mixed fortunes for films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with Gus Van Sant’s Sea Of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, being met with boos, while Todd Haynes’ lesbian-themed Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, is getting huge buzz.

Variety is already saying the film may be one of the frontrunners at next year’s Oscar, remaking that early reaction to the movie ‘were some of the strongest of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival’.

Many are backing that sentiment, with Sasha Stone of Awards Daily commenting, “Weinstein is right in saying ‘Carol’ has the stuff. I think Hollywood will finally give Haynes the directing nod he so richly deserves. Rooney’s movie as much as Blanchett’s. Exceptional in every respect.”

Indiewire’s Anne Thompson meanwhile tweeted, “Blanchett & Mara carry Todd Haynes’ 50s lesbian romance Carol with glamorous allure. Strong contender for awards @cannes15 & beyond.”

The BBC meanwhile says the movie is ‘tipped for Cannes glory’.

While the film has been getting a brilliant response, Blanchett herself has stepped forward to clarify comments that many (incuding ourselves) took to suggest she was bisexual.

In a piece published in Variety last week, when asked about whether she had had relationships with women, Cate answered “Yes. Many times.” However it turns out this wasn’t all she said.

At a Cannes press conference she noted, “From memory, the conversation ran, ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said, ‘Yes, many times. If you mean I’ve had sexual relationships with them, the answer is ‘No’ – but that obviously didn’t make it to print.

“Call me old-fashioned but I thought one’s job as an actor was not to present one’s boring, small, microscopic universe but to make a psychological connection to another character’s experiences. My own life is of no interest to anyone else. Or maybe it is. But I certainly have no interest in putting my own thoughts and opinions out there.”

Carol is about the relationship between two women in 1950s New York. One is a young department store clerk, Therese (Rooney Mara), who dreams of a better life, and the other is the older Carol (Cate Blanchett), who is trapped in a loveless marriage. However Carol’s husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to suspect what is happening. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation.

It’s due for release in the US in December, which should set it up nicely for a strong Oscar run.

Carol Film Clips – First look at Cate Blanchett & Mia Wasikowska in the lesbian-themed movie

May 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Carol-cate-blanchett-slideAfter over a decade in the works, the film version of Patricia Highsmith’s The Price Of Salt, Carol, is due to debut at Cannes. To tie in to that a couple of clips from the lesbian-themed movie have popped up online, which you can watch below.

The movie is about the relationship between two women in 1950s New York.

Todd Haynes, known for previous LGBT-themed work such as Velvet Goldmine and Far From Heaven, directs. He previously worked with Blanchett on his unusual 2007 Bob Dylan biopic, I’m Not There.

An Oscar-bait release towards the end of the year is expected. [Read more…]

Felicity Jones & Rooney Mara Testing For Star Wars Spinoff Testing

January 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

felicity-jonesWhen Disney bought Lucasfilm they quickly announced not just that they would produce a new trilogy continuing the main Star Wars story arc, but that in the years between those films would be standalone movies. One of those even has a director – Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards –  and it’s even gotten to the point where they’re starting to look at actors.

According to THR, Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Rooney Mara (Pan) and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) are all set to test for the female lead. However it’s still not known what character they would be playing.

Previous rumours have suggested it would be everything from an origin story for Boba Fett to the tale of a young Han Solo when he was mixed up with a group of space pirates. However if they’re trying to find the female lead first, those rumours could be completely wrong.

It’s suggested that other actresses have also tested, but it’s not clear who, although it appears the early part of the search took place in Britain, before moving to the US. Felicity Jones is apparently high on the want list, but there may be complications with scheduling due to the fact she’s due to shoot Ron Howard’s Inferno this year.

Expect to hear more soon.
