May 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you ever thought people who take small boats out into the middle of the ocean are completely nuts, then Adrift is here to show you that you are completely correct.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the director of Everest and starring SHAILENE WOODLEY (Big Little Lies, The Fault in our Stars) and SAM CLAFLIN (Journey’s End, Me Before You, The Hunger Games films), ADRIFT is based on the incredible true story of two young adventurers whose chance encounter leads them first to love, and then to a fight for survival. Setting off on the journey of a lifetime across the Pacific Ocean, Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) are pushed to their limits as they sail directly into one of the most catastrophic storms in recorded history.

‘In the aftermath, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. Snowden (Blu-ray Review) – Oliver Stone looks into the life of the whistleblower

April 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson
Director: Oliver Stone
Running Time: 134 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 4th 2017 (UK)

Pretty much everyone has heard of Edward Snowden, but Oliver Stone wants to take us behind the headlines to look at the man himself and what he was exposing when he leaked top secret information about what spying agencies were up to. The movie opens at the end, with Snowden in a Hong Kong hotel room, preparing to go on record with what he knows and the information he’s releasing. Most of the rest of the film is told in flashback, when a young Ed is forced out of the military and gets a job at the CIA in the days after 9/11. Along with his new career, he starts a relationship with the lefty, arty Lindsay (Shailene Woodley).

Initially pleased to be helping the US prevent another major terrorist attack, but after working for the CIA and then as an NSA contractor, Snowden becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the massive surveillance network the government has built. Secret projects and operations allow the spying agencies to go far beyond just finding the bad guys, and give them the ability to hide illegal activities and mistakes, and to track pretty much anyone and everything they choose, whether they’ve done anything wrong or not. New Snowden Trailer – Oliver Stone directs Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the whistleblower tale

July 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joseph-gorden-levitt-as-edward-snowdenSnowden isn’t your usual Comic-Con fare, but the Oliver Stone film had a well-received panel in San Diego, which even included the real Edward Snowden participating via video link. For the rest of us, there’s a new trailer, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.’

Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage also star.

Snowden was originally due to be released at the end of last year, however it was pushed back to September 2016. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Allegiant (Blu-ray Review)

July 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Jeff Daniels, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort
Director: Robert Schwentke
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 11th 2016 (UK)

Poor old Divergent. Things started off well at the box office with the first movie, which helped Lionsgate decide they should expand their plans and turn the three books into four films. However, the second movie was slightly muted at the box office, and this one didn’t do well at all.

In Allegiant, Tris (Shailene Woodley) has opened the box, which suggests the city and its factions are part of an experiment, and that despite what they’ve been told, there is more to the world outside Chicago’s walls. Once out (despite many trying to stop them), Tris, Four (Theo James), her brother (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller), meet David (Jeff Daniels), the director of the experiment. He says they have been using Chicago and the factions to eventually find somebody genetically pure – the other people are defective – and that Tris may be that person. [Read more…]

joseph-gorden-levitt-as-edward-snowdenTo some Edward Snowden is a traitor, while to others he is a hero who blew the whistle of government spying programs. Now Oliver Stone is taking on the tale, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. The Divergent Series: Allegiant Trailer – Shailene Woodley returns in the dystopian franchise

September 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alligiant-teaser-poster-slideWhile Insurgent wasn’t as successful as its predecessor, Divergent, that hasn’t stopped plans to split the final book in the trilogy, Allegiant, in two films, which will now become The Divergent Series: Allegiant and The Divergent Series: Ascendant.

The makers will be hoping they find the box office success that slightly eluded this year’s Insurgent.

Allegiant in due in cinemas March 18 2016, and to help prepare us, the first teaser trailer has arrived.

The very brief official synopsis reads: ‘The next chapter in The Divergent Series sees Tris and Four venture over the wall to discover what remains of the rest of the world.’

Insurgent (DVD Review)

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Kate Winslet
Director: Robert Schwentke
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 3rd 2015 (UK)

Divergent arrived last year with a lot of fanfare and the hope on the part of its studio that it would become the new Hunger Games. While it did fairly good business at the box office, it didn’t exactly leave much of an impression. Now its sequel, Insurgent, arrives, which like its predecessor mainly leaves the viewers with the impression that, ‘Well, that happened’.

Following the events of the first film, Tris (Shailene Woodley) and many others are on the run. Meanwhile Jeanine moves on with her plan to take control of all the factions. Although she continues to see the divergents – those with multiple personality traits – as dangerous, she also knows she needs them, as it is only divergents who can open a box left behind by the city founders, which she believes will help her cement her power and end the divergent issue completely. Jeff Daniels Joins Divergent Series In A Key Role

April 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jeff-danielsJeff Daniels has left The Newsroom behind and following a bit of a hit with Dumb and Dumber To, he’s heading into teen action territory, as he’s signed up to star in the two-part conclusion to the Divergent series, Allegiant, according to THR.

Daniels is taking on a bit of a pivotal role, although if you don’t want to know how he fits into the world of fighting factions who don’t like those who straddle different personality types, you should stop reading now.

He’ll be David, the leader of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which set up the system where everyone is sorted into the factions of Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity, and Candor. As you may have guessed, their motives in doing this may not have been totally altruistic.

The films will see Tris (Shailene Woodley) on the run and trying to figure out the mystery of the world she was born into. Allegiant: Part 1 will be out March 2016, with Part 2 coming a year later.
