First Look At Shailene Woodley In Young Adult Adaptation Divergent

April 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

divergent-ew1Summit Entertainment is hoping that Divergent will be the new young adult movie sensation when it’s released early next year. They and parent company Lionsgate know from Twilight and Hunger Games that part of ensuring that happens is starting the hype early, so even though filming only just started in Chicago, the first photo has already arrived giving us a look at Shailene Woodley as Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior.

Neil Burger is directing the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling novel, which takes place in a dystopian future made up of five factions that are based on different personality types. As they come of age, everyone must join the faction they fit into, but certain people are ‘divergents’, showing traits from more than one group. Tris uncovers that these people are seen as dangerous and the government wants to get rid of them.

The image, from EW, shows Tris taking the place of a fellow Dauntless initiate, as she stands still while knives are being thrown directly at her face.

Woodley commented about the movie and her cast mates, “It’s a good group. We’re hanging out on weekends, celebrating birthdays. Everyone just wants to get to know one another. It’s rare to get a big group together and not have any conflicts. It’s really kind of amazing.”

The film will be out March 2014.

Ashley Judd Joins Divergent, As Shailene Woodley’s Mother

April 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ashley-juddFor a few years in the late 90s and early 00s, Ashley Judd was a big star, but then she fell into the giant hole Hollywood reserves for actresses in their late 30s and early 40s, which few manage to negotiate with their star power still intact. Now it appears she’s found the slightly dubious light on the other side of that, when she’s allowed to play authority roles and mothers.

She recently starred in Olympus Has Fallen and now she’s signed up to star in Divergent, according to THR. Judd will play Natalie Prior, the mother of Shailene Woodley’s Tris. The story is set in a world where citizens are divided into five distinct factions, based on personality traits. The story follows Tris, who is a ‘divergent’, someone who doesn’t completely fit into any one of the stringent factions. She discovers a conspiracy to destroy all the divergents, and must learn why these people are seen as being so dangerous before it’s too late.

Maggie Q, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Jai Courtney, Theo James, and Kate Winslet also star, with Neil Burger directing from a screenplay by Vanessa Taylor and Evan Daugherty, adapted from the novel by Veronica Roth. Shooting began last week in Chicago.

Shailene Woodley Circles The Fault in Our Stars

March 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shailene-woodleyAlthough she hasn’t quite signed on yet, The Descendants star Shailene Woodley has been offered the lead role of Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars, for director Josh Boone (Stuck in Love).

She’d play Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenage girl stricken with cancer who falls for a boy in her support group.

Josh Boone commented on the casting, “During our exhaustive search to find Hazel Grace Lancaster, I saw some stunning auditions by today’s finest young actresses. Over 250 girls read for the part, but it wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time. It was like lightning striking. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”

Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber ((500) Days of Summer) wrote the Black Listed screenplay, based on John Green’s novel. Green commented, “I am absolutely thrilled that Shailene will be playing Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars. It means a lot to me that she is a fan of the book, and I know from our conversations that she has a profound understanding of Hazel. Watching her audition, I felt like Hazel Grace Lancaster was talking to me. It was eerie-and very exciting.”

Woodley’s star is certainly on the rise, as she will next be seen in The Spectacular Now, set for release later this year. She recently shot the role of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and she will soon move on to the lead role in young adult fantasy adaptation Divergent.

Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz & Ansel Elgort Will Be Divergent

March 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Maggie-QWith Twilight at an end, Summit Entertainment has lost its biggest franchise, but it’s hoping to have a similar amount of success with Divergent, based on the first in Veronica Roth’s planned young adult dystopian trilogy. Shailene Woodley has already signed on for the lead role, with Kate Winslet also up for the movie.

Now they’ve been joined by Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz and Ansel Elgort according to THR.

Divergent, which has inevitably drawn comparisons to The Hunger Games, is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior, who lives in a society divided into five factions, each based on a different virtue: honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness, and intelligence. Beatrice must choose which faction she wants to try and join, and starts training in order to enter.

Newcomer Ansel Elgort will play Tris’ brother Caleb, who chooses a different faction from his sister and family. Although he’s older that Tris in the book, THR suggest that he’s her twin in the movie. Zoe Kravitz is set to be Christina, Tris’ new friend and fellow initiate. Maggie Q meanwhile is Tori, a tattoo artist who’s involved in testing Tris to determine which faction she’s most suited for.

It seems they’re still looking for the male lead of Four, despite having been searching for months. Neil Burger is set to direct, with shooting kicking off later this year.

Kate Winslet May Join Shailene Woodley In Divergent

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kate-winsletWith Twilight finished, Summit Entertainment is keen to get back into the young adult business and is throwing their weight behind Divergent, based on the first book in Veronica Roth’s planned dystopian trilogy. Descendants star Shailene Woodley is already attached to the lead role, and now Variety reports she’s likely to be joined by Kate Winslet.

Divergent, which has inevitably drawn comparisons to The Hunger Games, is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior, who lives in a society divided into five factions, each based on a different virtue: honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness, and intelligence. Beatrice must choose which faction she wants to try and join, and starts training in order to enter.

There’s no word on which role Winslet is in talks to play, although it’s likely to either be Tris’ mother, Natalie Prior, or Jeanine Matthews, the leader of the Erudite faction.

We reported a few weeks ago that Alex Pettyfer, Lucas Till and Jeremy Irvine were up for a major male role in the movie (presumably Four, Tris’ trainer), but the latest Variety report suggests they’re now out of the running as the studio is looking for someone a tiny bit older to take on the role.

Neil Burger is directing the movie, which should go into production later this year.

Alex Pettyfer, Lucas Till And Jeremy Irvine Eyed For Divergent

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

divergent-leadA couple of month ago, The Descendants star Shailene Woodley signed up to take the female lead in the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s novel Divergent, and now Variety reports that Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike), Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) are at the top of the list to take the main male role.

The book, which is drawing comparisons to The Hunger Games, is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior, who lives in a society divided into five factions, each based on a different virtue: honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness, and intelligence. Beatrice must choose which faction whe wants to try and join, and starts training in order to enter.

Variety doesn’t specifically mention the male character Pettyfer, Irvin and Till are up for, but it’s presumed it’s Four, the man who helps train Beatrice.

Neil Burger will direct this first installment of what is being set up as a trilogy.

Christopher Meloni Up For Gregg Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago it was revealed that queer filmmaker Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation) was busy putting together a new movie, White Bird, with Shailene Woodley, Eva Green and Shiloh Fernandez set to star. Now it appears the title has changed slightly to White Bird In A Blizzard, with Deadline reporting that Christopher Meloni and Gabourey Sidibe have been added to the cast.

The movie is about a young woman who loses control of her life when her mother disappears. Woodley will be playing the main part, but it’s not clear how the other actors will play into the story.

Meloni has been having some fun since leaving Law & Order: SVU, going vampiric in True Blood as well as joining the cast of superhero movie, Man Of Steel. Now he’s going a little more arty, with Araki’s movie. It’s not clear when White Bird might shoot.

Shailene Woodley Circles Hunger Games-esque Divergent

October 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following her Golden Globe nominated performance in The Descendants, Shailene Woodley’s career has been flying. Just in the last week it’s been revealed she’s up for the highly coveted role of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and now THR reports she’s the process of making a deal to play the female lead in Divergent.

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth, which is drawing comparisons to The Hunger Games. The story is about a 16 year old girl named Beatrice Prior, who lives in a society divided into five factions, each based on a different virtue: honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness, and intelligence. Neil Burger will direct this first installment of what is being set up as a trilogy. Snow White and the Huntsman’s Evan Daugherty is writing the screenplay.

The current plan is for shooting to begin in March of 2013, which hopefully won’t clash with Spiderman 2.

Shiloh Fernandez Joins Gregg Araki’s White Bird

October 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mysterious Skin, Kaboom and The Doom Generation director Gregg Araki is a fascinating filmmaker, even if sometimes he’s had difficulty reigning in his tendency towards the random and bizarre. He’s currently putting together a new film called White Bird, which already has The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley and Eva Green set to star.

Now they’ve got some male company, as Red Riding Hood’s Shiloh Fernandez has signed up to appear in the movie, according to Deadline. The movie is about a young woman who loses control of her life when her mother disappears. Woodley will be playing the main part, but it’s not clear how Fernandez will play into the story. While Araki’s movies have generally had a very queer sensibility, it isn’t known whether this one will too.

Fernandez will next be seen in the remake of The Evil Dead. It isn’t clear when White Bird might shoot.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Eyes Shailene Woodley As Mary Jane

October 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Amazing Spider-man decided to go with Gwen Stacy as Peter Parker’s love interest, eschewing Mary Jane Watson, who’s always been Spidey’s main squeeze in the popular imagination. However it appears Mary Jane will make an appearance in The Amazing Spider-man 2, as Variety reports The Descendants star Shailene Woodley is in early talks to take the role.

Sony is also seeking an actor to play Harry Osborn, Peter’s best friend who was portrayed by James Franco in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. It is also rumoured that the studio is looking for someone to play Electro, a villain who gains the ability to control electricity after he is struck by lightning. The villain’s involvement has not been confirmed yet.

Marc Webb is directing the sequel from a screenplay by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Jeff Pinkner, based on an early draft by James Vanderbilt. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2013.
