3 Generations Trailer – The trans-themed drama starring Elle Fanning, Susan Sarandon & Naomi Watts is finally coming

April 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in August 2015 we got the first trailer for a trans-themed movie called About Ray, which was supposed to be released not long afterwards in the US. However, then it dropped off the release schedule. There was also a slightly tepid reception at film festivals and anger among some that a female-to-male trans teenager was being played by a cisgender actor, Elle Fanning.

However, now it’s back on the radar, with a new title – 3 Generations – and a new trailer. It’s also got The Weinstein Company (TWC) revved up to fight the fact it’s been given an ‘R’ rating by the MPAA. The US certification body cited language including some sexual references behind the decision.

TWC has enlisted the help of top lawyer David Boies to advise on their dissent. Largely known for his pivotal role to overturn Proposition 8, California’s discriminatory ban on gay marriage, back in 2009, Boies has consulted on numerous human rights issues for TWC, including censorship of the Academy Award nominated film Carol, as well as a previous protest of the rating of the documentary Bully, which successfully fought to lower its rating from R to PG-13.

Executive producer Naomi Watts, who stars in the film as Ray’s mother Maggie, comments: “This film is a beautiful and touching story about family and identity. It is important for teenagers to see it and the R Rating doesn’t reflect today’s society. 3 Generations doesn’t have a bad bone in its body, it’s an expression of love, acceptance, strength, and honesty, values that could not be more necessary right now.”

However, the less charitable may see this social justice fight as a way to distract from the criticism the movie has received due to the cast of Elle Fanning, as well as to help link it to the current fights of trans teens such as Gavin Grimm and Mack Beggs.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘3 GENERATIONS tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has struggled with the body assigned to him at birth and is determined to start transitioning. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding.’

The film will be released in LA & New York on May 5th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Feud: Bette and Joan Trailer – Jessica Lange & Susan Sarandon take on Davis & Crawford

February 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Long before the word ‘frenemies’ had been coined, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were exactly that. Never afraid to share a bitchy comment about the other, or to jockey to either put themselves above the other or to push their fellow movie star down – their rivalry became legend.

However, after feuding for decades, the the early 1960s Davis and Crawford found themselves out of favour in Hollywood and struggling to get parts. As a result something happened that no one thought ever would, they agreed to be in a movie together – What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?

Now American Horror Story and Glee’s Ryan Murphy has created a new show about what happened during the making of the camp melodrama. Jessica Lange plays Crawford with Susan Sarandon as Davis, and as the trailer below shows, there’s all the cat-fighting and bitchiness you could possibly hope for.

The movie starts airing on FX in the States on March 5th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Natalie Portman & Nicholas Hoult Up For Xavier Dolan’s Death and Life of John F. Donovan

February 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicholas-Hoult

Back in 2014 Jessica Chastain, Kathy Bates, Susan Sarandon and Kit Harington all signed up to star in the first English-language film from queer Canadian writer/actor/director Xavier Dolan. It’s taken longer to get it going than originally planned (largely because he slotted in the upcoming It’s Only the End of the World beforehand), but Dolan has managed to hang on to his cast, along with previously announced actors such as Michael Gambon, Bella Thorne, Chris Zylka and Emily Hampshire.

However, he’s decided that isn’t an impressive enough ensemble, as Variety reports that Natalie Portman, Nicholas Hoult and Thandie Newton have joined The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. The film is about an American TV star (Harington) with everything working out for him who has a secretive correspondence with an 11 year old in London. When a gossip columnist (Jessica Chastain) makes the whole thing look indecent, his life is turned upside-down.

It’s not clear who the newly announced actors will play, but it is known that Kathy Bates is set to be the actor’s high-powered manager, while Sarandon will play his mother.

Film rights are currently being sold at the Berlin film festival, with plans to shoot later this year.

About Ray Trailer – Elle Fanning is a trans teen, alongside Naomi Watts & Susan Sarandon

August 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

about-ray-slideThere are quite a few high-profile LGBT-themed films starring well-known actors coming out before the end of the year, including Freeheld (starring Ellen Page and Julianne Moore) and Stonewall (with Jeremy Irvine). There’s also About Ray, starring Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, which we haven’t heard as much about, until now with the arrival of a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘About Ray tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they must deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has come to the realization that she isn’t meant to be a girl and has decided to transition from female to male.

As with the arguments raging over whether Stonewall will erase the contribution of trans* and people of color in the 1969 Stonewall riots, there are bound to be questions about a cisgender person playing a trans* character in About Ray, especially at a time of increasing awareness in the mainstream of transgender people. We will have to see what people have to see whe it arrives in US cinemas in September. [Read more…]

Susan Sarandon & Kathy Bates Join Queer Filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s First English-Language Film

December 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kathy-bates-susan-sarandonBack in September it was revealed that Xavier Dolan fan Jessica Chastain had signed on to star in the Quebecois filmmaker’s first English-language movie. Now she’s has some company, with the queer director ensuring that the film has plenty of impressive female talent by adding Kathy Bates and Susan Sarandon to the cast. Kit Harington is also set to star.

The new movie is called The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, which Dolan has previously described as “the story of an American movie star with everything working out for him who has a secretive correspondence with an 11 year old in London.”

THR expands on that, saying Kit Harington’s title character is famed for playing a popular superhero, ‘whose life and career are turned upside-down when his private correspondence with an 11-year-old fan is exposed and made to look indecent by a villainous gossip columnist (Jessica Chastain).’

Kathy Bates is set to be Donovan’s high-powered manager, while Sarandon will play his mother.

Dolan comments, “I’m so psyched about working with these two wonderful, mythical actresses. My excitement is almost convulsive.”

He adds, “Susan Sarandon’s role of the mother is tricky for me because it’s feels very real. The rapport my mom has with my life [since my profile has risen] — and of course I’m not as famous as the character of Donovan — is different now. I think all people can relate to this because whenever you walk out of the path that’s been traced for you, people from your old life find it a little menacing, because it questions their own worth.”

Dolan made waves when he won a prize at Cannes for his directorial debut, I Killed My Mother, which he helmed when he was only 18-years-old. He’s made four more acclaimed films since then (Heartbeats, Laurence Anyways, Tom At The Farm and Mommy), all of which have concerned the queer experience in one way or another.

Tammy Teaser Trailer – Plus a poster for the Melissa McCarthy movie

February 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Melissa McCarthy is living two lives at the moment. She’s great in movies and becoming a true star, but she’s also stuck in the frankly embarrassing sitcom Mike & Molly, which has achieved the almost impressive feat of managing four whole seasons with only one joke – look fat people!

However she’s spreading her wings on film, co-writing the script for Tammy and producing, while her hubby, Ben Falcone, directs and wrote the script with McCarthy. While we’ve had a couple of images, now the first teaser trailer and poster has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After losing her job and learning that her husband has been unfaithful, a woman (Melissa McCarthy) hits the road with her profane, hard-drinking grandmother (Susan Sarandon).”

Tammy is due in cinemas at the beginning of July. [Read more…]

Melissa McCarthy is stretching her wings with Tammy, which she doesn’t just star in but also co-wrote and produces. She was also due to co-direct, but in the end those duties went solely to her hubby, Ben Falcone.

Now the first image has arrived, featuring McCarthy alongside Susan Sarandon.

The movie is about Tammy (McCarthy), who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and discovers her husband is cheating on her at the same time. She decides to take a road trip with her profane, whiskey-swilling grandmother (Sarandon). Dan Aykroyd and Mark Duplass also star.

The film will be out this summer.

Susan Sarandon Joins Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy, With Kathy Bates Going Lesbian

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

susan-sarandonMelissa McCarthy is set to make her directorial debut this year with Tammy, alongside hubby Ben Falcone, working from a script they wrote together. Now she’s started to pull the cast together, with THR saying Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates are in talks to join the film, with Deadline adding that Mark Duplass has also signed up.

The screenplay is about a woman (McCarthy) who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and then finds out her husband is cheating on her. She goes on a road trip with her foul-mouthed, hard-drinking grandmother (Sarandon) to escape the problems in her life.

Shirley MacLaine was apparently in talks for the grandmother role, but that didn’t work out, and so Sarandon is on the process of stepping in. Kathy Bates meanwhile will be ‘the grandmother’s lesbian friend who saves the duo from some bad spots’. Duplass meanwhile is a man who McCarthy meets and develops a strange relationship with during the trip.

The film will shoot this spring.
