Princess Cyd (US Cinema Review) – Life opens & changes for a teenage girl in the lesbian-themed film

November 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Rebecca Spence, Jessie Pinnick, Malic White, James Vincent Meredith, Tyler Ross
Director: Stephen Cone
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: NR (US)
Release Date: Out Now (NY & Chicago), December 1st 2017 (LA)

Stephen Cone has been building a pretty strong reputation as a writer/director with contemplative LGBT-themed films such as Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party and The Wise Kids. Indeed, New York’s prestigious Museum Of The Moving Image has just finished the ‘Talk About the Passion: Stephen Cone’s First Act’ season, which featured a selection of his film, including his latest, Princess Cyd.

The titular Cyd (Jessie Pinnick) is a 16-year-old who lives with her depressed single father. For the summer she goes to visit her novelist aunt, Miranda (Rebecca Spence), which will both get her away from her dad for a few weeks, and allow her to catch up with her mom’s side of the family, who she hasn’t had a lot of contact with since her mother’s death. Starring: Natalie West, Tyler Ross, Conor McCahill
Director: Nathan Adloff
Running Time: 79 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 8th 2013

An unusual relationship that leads to a few important lessons is probably the only way I can sum up Nate & Margaret in a few words. However I have more than a few words so I’ll go into greater depth.

The film tells the story of 19-year-old Nate (Tyler Ross) and 52-year-old Margaret (Natalie West) as their somewhat unusual relationship is rocked by the arrival of Nate’s first boyfriends and Margaret’s pursuit of a career as a stand up comedian. [Read more…]

Nate & Margaret (DVD) (US Release)

September 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Natalie West, Tyler Ross, Conor McCahill
Director: Nathan Adloff
Running Time: 82 mins
Release Date: August 28th 2012

Nate (the slightly Bieber-esque Tyler Ross) is a young man studying film, who spends most of his time with his best friend, a 52-year-old woman called Margaret (Natalie West). It’s an unconventional friendship, but it works, with Margaret helping Nate with his films and Nate encouraging Margaret to further her interest in stand-up comedy. However when Nate gets his first boyfriend, a wedge starts to be driven between them.

Nate & Margaret could have been a very generic affair, and while it doesn’t exact break new narrative ground, it’s nice that it doesn’t go to the places you’d immediately think it would. Normally a film about a young man and a middle-aged woman would concern itself with asking why such a friendship would develop in the first place, but the film treats it as perfectly natural. Admittedly both are slightly socially awkward, particularly Margaret, whose lack of a husband and/or kids is at least partially the result of a history of abuse. [Read more…]
