Jupiter Ascending Trailer – The Wachowskis return to sci-fi and Channing Tatum gets Elfin

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Wachowskis are coming back with Jupiter Ascending, and if this trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to look as awesome as you’d hope from Lana and Andy. There’s certainly some unexpected imagery, including Channing Tatum channelling his inner elf.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.

‘Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

‘From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.’

It’s due out next July. [Read more…]

The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending Plot Revealed As Production Begins

April 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lana-andy-wachowskiAlthough Cloud Atlas didn’t break the bank, Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow, who backed The Matrix and Speed Race,r have been happy to get back in business with Andy and Lana Wachowski for Jupiter Ascending.

It’s now been announced that the film has started shooting (in fact things started rolling on April 2nd), and with it comes a slightly more in-depth synopsis, letting us now what we can expect from the film.

Here it is, ‘Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things.  Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks.  Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

‘Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike”) and Mila Kunis (“Oz the Great and Powerful”) lead an international cast that also includes Sean Bean (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy), Eddie Redmayne (“Les Misérables”), Douglas Booth (“LOL”), Tuppence Middleton (TV’s “The Lady Vanishes”), Doona Bae (“Cloud Atlas”), James D’Arcy (“Hitchcock”) and Tim Pigott-Smith (“Alice in Wonderland”).’

The film will shoot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK until June, at which time filming will move to Chicago for completion. It’ll hit cinemas in 2014.

Andy & Lana Wachowski’s Sci-fi TV Project Sens8 Goes To Netflix

March 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lana-andy-wachowskiAt the moment, the likes of Netflix and Amazon are in a bit of a battle for original programming, often going for more interesting projects the networks are wary of that – such as David Fincher’s House Of Card, Hemlock Grove or resurrecting Arrested Development. Now Netflix is teaming up with Lana and Andy Wachowski, along with Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski, for Sens8, which will be the The Matrix and Cloud Atlas directors’ first television project.

A press release describes the show as ‘a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted’. The current plan is to get 10 episodes made and stream on Netflix at the end of 2014.

There’s little extra info on exactly what the series will be about, other than the barely there description above.

The Wachowskis comment, “Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born… We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.”

The current presumption is that the Wachowskis will direct at least a couple of episodes, although that’s not been confirmed as yet.

Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.

What is Sens8? We still don’t know exactly, beyond that bare decription above. Reportedly it came out of a set of spec scripts the trio crafted, and we’re still working under the early assumption that the Wachowskis will direct some of the series.

The filmmakers do use the press release to explain why they wanted to work with the show’s co-creator:

We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.

Cloud Atlas (Cinema)

February 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Tom Hanks
Director: Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski
Running Time: 172 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 22nd 2013

At the beginning of Cloud Atlas Ben Wishaw’s Robert puts a gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger. Three tortuous hours later I wanted to do the same.

Cloud Atlas was on a long list of ‘unfilmable’ books that have become reality on the screen, but unlike Life Of Pi, which garnered many an Oscar nomination, this proves that the novel should have stayed just that. On screen it’s a complete mess – sprawling, often dull, frequently incomprehensible, utterly humourless and with a vaguely eco-message that is presumably supposed to save its faults – it doesn’t. Douglas Booth Heads For The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending

February 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Douglas Booth

Douglas Booth

Douglas Booth may look more like a fashion designer has carved him for the catwalk than a real person, but he’s certainly handsome and is building a respectable acting careers that’s seen him appear in Christopher And His Kind, LOL and as Pip in the BBC’s Great Expectations.

He’s got even bigger projects coming up with Romeo & Juliet, Noah and now Variety reports that he’s joined the cast of the Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending.

The likes of Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne, and Sean Bean are already onboard the sci-fi flick, which is set in a future where one supreme leader rules the universe and humans are considered the lowest form of life. Tatum will play a bounty hunter who is ordered to kill an Earth woman (Mila Kunis) who is the spitting image of the Queen of the Universe. However rather than completing his task, he starts to fall for her.

There’s no news on exactly who Booth will play, although I’d be willing to bet he’s on the side of the rulers rather than the subjugated humans.

It’s believed Andy and Lana Wachowski hope to shoot the movie in the next few months.

Sean Bean Heads For The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sean-beanAlthough Cloud Atlas didn’t do as well as Lana and Andy Wachowski probably hoped, they’re planning a slightly more mainstream sci-fi adventure for their next outing – Jupiter Ascending. Now a new cast member has signed up, with Deadline reporting that Sean Bean has joined the already cast Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, and Eddie Redmayne.

The story is set in a universe where humans are at the bottom of the evolutionary food chain, and one supreme leader rules all. The plot follows a young Earth woman (Mila Kunis) who is targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe, because she bears a striking similarity to the ruler. Channing Tatum plays the bounty hunter who is sent to kill the woman, but ends up falling for her in the process (so it’s all a bit Snow White). Sean Bean is portraying Stringer, who’s described as a ‘Han Solo-type character’.

Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski are directing from their own original screenplay. The last we heard an early 2013 production start was being eyed, although an exact start date isn’t known.

Chinese Release Of Cloud Atlas Removes Gay Sex Scenes

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cloud-atlasOne of the most interesting developments in film in the last few years is the rise in the importance of China and the particular issues with releasing movies there. It’s fast becoming one of the biggest markets on the planet, but China’s laws mean only a handful of foreign movies can be released there each year. One way around that is to make your film a Chinese co-production, which is how Cloud Atlas is getting released in China (normally it’s only Hollywood’s biggest movie that are brought out in the country).

However Chinese audiences are getting a rather different version of the movie than the one audiences elsewhere have seen. Producers Grant Hill and Philip Lee told The Wrap, “We were unaware that our Chinese partners, Dreams of Dragon Pictures, had cut almost 30 minutes from the film. We did know that, as with other countries, there were likely to be censorship trims and we trusted them to protect the integrity of the filmmaker’s creativity and vision.”

Dreams of Dragon Pictures provided just over $10 million of the $100 million budget.

According to E!, the bits removed “included sex scenes featuring both gay and straight characters, as well as violent set pieces.” However it’s not immediately clear if other elements of the relationship between Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) and Rufus Sixsmith (James D’arcy) have been altered.

Including homosexuality in movies is not unheard of in China, although it can cause issues with the censors and is seen as box office poison.

Co-director Lana Wachowski doesn’t seem that impressed, commenting at the premiere, “It sucks really, but I believe you can watch the full version online.” It was a jab at both the decision to severely cut the movie, as well as China’s rampant piracy problem.

Eddie Redmayne Joins Channing Tatum In The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eddie-redmayneCloud Atlas may not have been the critical and commercial success the Wachowskis (and co-director Tom Twyker) had hoped, but they’re now planning a return to the sci-fi arena with Jupiter Ascending. They’ve already got Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis attached to star, and now Variety reports that Les Miserables star Eddie Redmayne is in talks to join him.

The movie is set in a future where humans are considered the lowest form of life in the galaxy. Tatum is set to star as an intergalactic bounty hunter who is sent by the Queen of the Universe to kill an human woman (Kunis) whose genetic detailss are identical to the Queen’s. And as this is the movies, the would-be assassin begins to fall in love with the person he’s supposed to kill.

It’s not been revealed how Eddie Redmayne fits into all this. Andy and Lana Wachowski will direct from their own screenplay, with production scheduled to begin early next year.

Seven Great Cloud Atlas Character Banners Emerge

September 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cloud Atlas is certainly one of the most interesting movies coming in the next few months, and with good (if not ecstatic) buzz coming from festival screenings, it should be certainly worth a look. Now seven character banners have been released, which are certainly very eye-catching.

The movie, based on David Mitchell’s novel spans hundreds of years, showing how individual lives affect others in the past, present, and future through a series of stories. The actors, including Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent and Tom Hanks play different people in each story, jumping between different races and genders. It’s currently set for UK release of February 22nd, 2013.

New Cloud Atlas Trailer – Fresh look at the Wachowskis and Tom Twyker’s ambitious movie

September 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s still difficult to know if Cloud Atlas is going to fulfil its towering ambition, but the more we see the more of a must-see it’s becominh. A few weeks ago a six-minute trailer introduced us to the movie’s six interconnected stories, featuring the same actors playing different characters in various time periods. Now a new, more traditional trailer has shown up, which trades on the visuals and scope of the movie and makes it look pretty impressive.
