Director Doug Liman Up For Railhead, Based On The Philip Reeve Novel

April 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanWarner Bros. has snapped up the rights to Philip Reeves’ upcoming children’s book, Railhead, which Doug Liman is already in negotiations to direct, according to THR.

The book is set in a futuristic world where trains travel through outer space through a series of portals. A young thief is hired to steal an object that is much more important than he is lead to believe. This starts him on an adventure that could alter the course of the universe.

The isn’t set to be published in the autumn of 2015, so with Warner buying the rights so early they must think it has a lot of potential.

Doug Liman’s next movie, the Tom Cruise sci-fi Edge of Tomorrow, arrives in cinemas in June. He also recently signed up to direct the video game adaptation Splinter Cell last month.

Tom Cruise & Emily Blunt Are Enhanced By Tech In A New Edge Of Tomorrow Poster

April 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

edge-of-tomorrow-poster4In a summer full of franchises, sequels and reboots, Edge Of Tomorrow is one of the few major movies that isn’t based on something everyone already knows (although it was originally the graphic novel All You Need Is Kill).

The trailers have suggested it could be something pretty cool, and that’s backed up with a moody new poster, featuring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The epic action of ‘Edge of Tomorrrow’ unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

‘Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

‘But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.’

The film’s due out in May.

New Edge Of Tomorrow Trailer – Tom Cruise just can’t stop dying in the massive sci-fi film

March 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While it’s difficult not to think of Groundhog Day when you see the plot of Edge Of Tomorrow, with this new trailer, the Tom Cruise sci-fi is setting out its stall to be one of the biggest original movies of the year.

It certainly does a good job of selling the film’s massive action set-pieces, which look a little like a videogame – and when you see what the plot is about, that’s probably not an accident.

Edge Of Tomorrow Tease – Take a brief look at the Tom Cruise sci-fi ahead of tomorrow’s trailer

March 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Trailers for trailer are a bit of an odd thing, but when it’s an original movie with a massive budget, you can understand why a studio would think letting people know a trailer is coming and what they might expect. Now a brief look at Edge Of Tomorrow has arrived ahead of tomorrow’s full trailer – and it’s here to show this is going to be sci-fi on a huge scale.

And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

‘The international cast also includes Bill Paxton (“Aliens,” HBO’s “Big Love”), Kick Gurry (Australian TV’s “Tangle”), Dragomir Mrsic (“Snabba Cash II”), Charlotte Riley (“World Without End”), Jonas Armstrong (BBC TV’s “Robin Hood”), and Franz Drameh (“Attack the Block”).

‘Liman is directing “Edge of Tomorrow” from a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie and Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth, based on the acclaimed novel All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.’

It’s out at the end of May. [Read more…]

Doug Liman Takes On Splinter Cell, With Tom Hardy Still Attached To Star

March 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanDoug Liman is currently finishing up work on his Tom Cruise sci-fi Edge Of Tomorrow, but he’s already thinking about what to do next, as THR reports he is in early talks to direct the video game adaptation Splinter Cell.

The movie still has Tom Hardy attached to star (he’s been involved since November 2012), who will play Sam Fisher, an expert operative for Echelon, which specialises in black ops. His job is to neutralise terrorist threats across the globe, using his combat training and an assortment of high-tech weapons and gadgets.

The video games, based on Tom Clancy’s books, have been incredibly popular, selling more than 23 million units worldwide.

Liman’s involvement suggests he really wants to work with Tom Hardy, as they were previously both attached to Everest, about George Mallory’s ill-fated attempt to become the first man to the top of Mount Everest. That project never got off the ground, partly because of a rival movie that is currently filming, which may be set in the present day, but still involves tragedy striking on the world’s highest mountain.

Doug Liman To Direct Tom Cruise In El Presidente

November 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanFor several years Tom Cruise has been attached to El Presidente but the movie has never actually got off the ground. Now he’s moving it back up the list again, with THR reporting that Doug Liman has signed on to direct the comedy.

Liman and Cruise have just worked together on the sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow, now they’re reuniting with a movie about a Secret Service agent (Tom Cruise) who is assigned to protect America’s worst former President, an alcoholic womanizer who was never elected President, but was elevated from Vice President after the Commander-in-Chief died.

As he has been for the last couple of year, Jack Nicholson is being eyed to play the former President, who must go on the run with his new protector when a threat is made on his life. However it’s not known whether they’ll be able to convince Jack to step on a movie set once more.

Jesse Armstrong and Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Daniel J. Goor wrote the initial script, with Paul Attanasio providing a rewrite. There’s no news on exactly when it might shoot.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Henry Cavill Or Tom Hiddleston May Go Up Everest

October 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

benedict-cumberbatchThe Fifth Estate may have bombed badly at the US box office last weekend, but Benedict Cumberbart is still very much in demand. That includes by Doug Liman, who wants him for his upcoming film, Everest, according the Deadline.

There are plenty of other hot names in contention, including Joel Kinnaman, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill, Luke Evans, Dan Stevens, Matthew Goode, and Jim Sturgess – although it’s not known which of those will actually end up in the film as the legendary George Mallory and his Australian rival George Finch . Tom Hardy was previously attached, but was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

The story is an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s non-fiction book Paths of Glory, which is all about explorer George Mallory’s attempt to get into the record books as the first man to reach the top of Mount Everest. The movie is all about Mallory’s obsession with the mountain, as well as his rivalry with fellow climber George Finch.

Mallory and his climbing partner Sandy Irvine failed in two attempts to scale the mountain in 1921 and 1922. They were spotted near the summit on their third attempt in 1924 but nobody knows if they actually made it to the top, as they died on the mountain. Their remains were discovered in 1999 by Mark Anker.

There’s also another movie called Everest in the works, which has Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke circling. That one is due to shoot this autumn and is about an infamous incident in 1996, when tragedy struck two separate groups who tried to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Doug Liman Circling Action-Thriller Narco Sub

October 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanBourne Identity and Mr & Mrs Smith director Doug Liman is in early discussions to direct the action-thriller Narco Sub, according to The Wrap. He’s certainly not the first director to show interest in it though.

Tony Scott had been attached to direct back in 2011, but sadly his involvement ended when he died. Last February Joe Carnahan flirted with the project. Now he’s gone and Liman is coming aboard. The title refers to small submarines that South American cartels use to smuggle their illegal drugs into the US. It’s previously been reported that it will be in the same vein as Tony Scott’s thrillers Crimson Tide and Man on Fire.

David Guggenheim (Safe House) wrote the screenplay. Liman is currently in post-production on the sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise. It’ll be out next June.
