Allegiant (Blu-ray Review)

July 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Jeff Daniels, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort
Director: Robert Schwentke
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 11th 2016 (UK)

Poor old Divergent. Things started off well at the box office with the first movie, which helped Lionsgate decide they should expand their plans and turn the three books into four films. However, the second movie was slightly muted at the box office, and this one didn’t do well at all.

In Allegiant, Tris (Shailene Woodley) has opened the box, which suggests the city and its factions are part of an experiment, and that despite what they’ve been told, there is more to the world outside Chicago’s walls. Once out (despite many trying to stop them), Tris, Four (Theo James), her brother (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller), meet David (Jeff Daniels), the director of the experiment. He says they have been using Chicago and the factions to eventually find somebody genetically pure – the other people are defective – and that Tris may be that person. [Read more…]

Insurgent (DVD Review)

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Kate Winslet
Director: Robert Schwentke
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 3rd 2015 (UK)

Divergent arrived last year with a lot of fanfare and the hope on the part of its studio that it would become the new Hunger Games. While it did fairly good business at the box office, it didn’t exactly leave much of an impression. Now its sequel, Insurgent, arrives, which like its predecessor mainly leaves the viewers with the impression that, ‘Well, that happened’.

Following the events of the first film, Tris (Shailene Woodley) and many others are on the run. Meanwhile Jeanine moves on with her plan to take control of all the factions. Although she continues to see the divergents – those with multiple personality traits – as dangerous, she also knows she needs them, as it is only divergents who can open a box left behind by the city founders, which she believes will help her cement her power and end the divergent issue completely. Jeff Daniels Joins Divergent Series In A Key Role

April 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jeff-danielsJeff Daniels has left The Newsroom behind and following a bit of a hit with Dumb and Dumber To, he’s heading into teen action territory, as he’s signed up to star in the two-part conclusion to the Divergent series, Allegiant, according to THR.

Daniels is taking on a bit of a pivotal role, although if you don’t want to know how he fits into the world of fighting factions who don’t like those who straddle different personality types, you should stop reading now.

He’ll be David, the leader of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which set up the system where everyone is sorted into the factions of Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity, and Candor. As you may have guessed, their motives in doing this may not have been totally altruistic.

The films will see Tris (Shailene Woodley) on the run and trying to figure out the mystery of the world she was born into. Allegiant: Part 1 will be out March 2016, with Part 2 coming a year later.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent Trailer – Shailene Woodley is back in the divided young adult world

November 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

divergent-series-insurgent-poster1Divergent didn’t get a great reaction from critics, but audiences disagreed, as it grossed almost $300 worldwide and proved that Lionsgate was right to put three sequels into development before the first movie opened.

Now we have the first teaser for the clumsily named The Divergent Series: Insurgent.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.’

Naomi Watts Joins Divergent Sequels, Insurgent and Allegiant

June 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Naomi-WattsNaomi Watts hasn’t made many big mainstream movies since 2005’s King Kong, and when she has – such as the thriller Dream House – they haven’t done that well. It’s a smart move they to join the Divergent sequels, which are almost guaranteed to be a success when they’re released.

According to THR she’ll appear in Insurgent, Allegiant: Part 1 and Allegiant: Part 2 as Factionless leader Evelyn. Insurgent began production in Atlanta last week, so she’ll be stepping into the role very soon.

Insurgent will apparently shoot until Septmenber, as which point Watts will move on to Sea of Trees, where she’ll co-star with Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe.

Shailene Woodley and Theo James are both back for Insurgent as Tris and Four. Their character are now on the run from the power-hungry Jeanine (Kate Winslet), attempting to unlock the mysteries of the past that could alter the future of their universe.

Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer and Octavia Spencer also star. Robert Schwentke is directing from a screenplay by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.

Robert Schwentke To Direct Divergent Sequel, Insurgent

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-schwentkeAlthough some are wondering if Divergent will be the huge success the studio seems to think it will, Summit Entertainment is pushing ahead with plans for the sequel, Insurgent. They’ve now hired a director, as Robert Schwentke (Red) has been hired to helm.

Akiva Goldsman is writing the script, working from a draft initially written by Brian Duffield.

Insurgent continues the journey of Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) as war now looms. As the press release about Schwentke’s hiring says, ‘Sides will be chosen, secrets will emerge, and to uncover the truth about her world, Tris must be stronger than ever because shocking choices and sacrifices lie ahead.’

Divergent was written by first time author Veronica Roth and has topped The New York Times Best Sellers list ever since being published in April of 2011. Roth wrote the novel while she was earning her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University. It’s since been followed by Insurgent and Allegiant.

Summit’s current plan is to have Divergent out this March, with Insurgent coming March 20th, 2015, while Allegiant is slated for release on March 18th, 2016.

R.I.P.D Featurette – Inside the Rest In Peace Department with Ryan Reynolds

July 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To be honest, I’d be surprised if R.I.P.D. became a big hit, as despite a summer release slot in the US on July 19th (it doesn’t get until September 20th) and the presence of Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, plus a fun sounding plot, it doesn’t seem like Universal is pushing it too hard.

However a new featurette has now popped up online, which does make the movie look like it might be pretty entertaining.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two undead cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect our world from an increasingly destructive array of creatures who refuse to move peacefully to the other side. R.I.P.D. is directed by Robert Schwentke (Red) and produced by Neal H. Moritz (the Fast and Furious series, I Am Legend), Michael Fottrell and Mike Richardson.’ [Read more…]

Robert Schwentke To Helm The Finest Hours

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-schwentkeDirector Robert Schwentke’s next movie, R.I.P.D., doesn’t hit cinemas for a couple of months, but he’s already got a new project, as he has signed up to direct The Finest Hours for Disney, according to THR.

The studio picked up the rights to Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias’ non-fiction book of the same name in August 2011, but it’s only now that it’s moving forward. It’s set in 1952, when a vicious Noreaster storm devastated the New England coastline, with two massive oil tankers caught in the middle. When both ships were sliced in half, the Coast Guard mounted a heroic rescue attempt to save the crew members at sea.

The Fighter screenwriters Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson wrote the adaptation, with James Whitaker and Dorothy Aufiero producing. It isn’t known when it might start shooting.
