BlacKkKlansman Trailer – Spike Lee tells the true story of a black man infiltrating the Klan

May 16, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At its Cannes debut yesterday BlacKkKlansman was met with a rapturous response and a 10-minute standing ovation, with many saying Spike Lee’s movie captures the zeitgeist, using a true story from the past to talk about modern race issues and the bigotry of the Trump era.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, a time of great social upheaval as the struggle for civil rights rages on. Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) becomes the first African-American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department, but his arrival is greeted with skepticism and open hostility by the department’s rank and file. Undaunted, Stallworth resolves to make a name for himself and a difference in his community. He bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.

Posing as a racist extremist, Stallworth contacts the group and soon finds himself invited into its inner ‘circle. He even cultivates a relationship with the Klan’s Grand Wizard, David Duke (Topher Grace), who praises Ron’s commitment to the advancement of White America. With the undercover investigation growing ever more complex, Stallworth’s colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), poses as Ron in face-to-face meetings with members of hate group, gaining insider’s knowledge of a deadly plot. Together, Stallworth and Zimmerman team up to take down the organization whose real aim is to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.

‘Produced by the team behind the Academy-Award® winning Get Out, BlacKkKlansman offers an unflinching, true-life examination of race relations in 1970s America that is just as bracingly relevant in today’s tumultuous world.’

The film hits cinemas in August. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Spike Lee May Be Spinning Gold With Justin Timberlake

October 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spike-leeIn a few weeks we’ll get to see what Spike Lee’s take on Park Chan Wook’s Oldboy is like. However he’s already planning for the future, as THR reports he’s been approached to direct Spinning Gold, which has had Justin Timberlake attached to star and produce since 2011.

Spinning Gold is set to chronicle the life of Neil Bogart, who founded Casablanca Records in 1974 and is credited with discovering, launching and nurturing the careers of a generation of music superstars. KISS, Parliament, Donna Summer, and The Village People were just a few of the acts on the roster of Casablanca Records, whose sound and image would come to define 70s pop culture.

Neil’s son, Timothy Scott Bogart, is penning the script, and will also produce the film alongside his brother, Evan “Kidd” Bogart. There’s no info on when it might go in front of the cameras.

Josh Brolin Asks Why He Was Set Free In A New Oldboy Poster

October 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oldboy-poster2
It’s only a few weeks until Spike Lee’s remake of Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy hits cinemas, and to coincide with New York Comic Con, a new poster has been released via EW.

Here’s the synopsis for the movie: ‘OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, OLDBOY was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane.’

The film will hit US cinemas in late November and the UK in early December.

September 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While some are still furious that Hollywood has dared remake Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy, it actually look pretty intriguing, and Spike Lee is definitely an interesting director to take the project on. We’ve already had a poster and trailer, and now some new images have been released, featuring Elizabeth Olsen and Josh Brolin being all shirtless and locked up.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. Spike Lee Turns To Kickstarter For His Next Film

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spike-leeSpike Lee may well be a well-known name, but due to the fact he likes to make potentially contentious movies (at least in terms of how much they’ll gross), he often has difficulty finding funding for his movie. He’s now trying to get around that by launching a Kickstarter campaign for his next movie, which is currently known simply as The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint.

Lee is hoping to raise $1.25 million from the crowd-sourcing site. While most campaign are at pains to give as many details about the film as possible, Lee is keeping his cards close to his chest, other saying it’s about human beings who are addicted to blood. “Funny, sexy, and bloody (and it’s not ‘Blacula’),” he adds.

The director also spoke to Variety about why he decided to go the Kickstarter route, saying about crowd-sourcing that, “I never paid it much attention until one of my students told me about Veronica Mars, and then Zach Braff. I saw those two things and said, ‘I’ve got to give this a shot.’”

He added, “I always tell my students [at NYU], when they’re thinking about their thesis films, ‘Have an idea of how much money you can raise and then let that be the boundaries of your story.’ If you don’t raise your goal on Kickstarter, you lose everything. So, I picked a number where I felt that we could do it, and where I felt I could make the best film I could for that amount of money. Today is day one of the 30 days we have to raise the money, and if God is willing and the creek don’t rise, we’ll be shooting in November or December.”

He’s positioning his film as an alternative to the studio’s tentpole addiction, saying on the Kickstarter, “I understand now that, with the amount of money it costs to market a film, the studios need films that are going to be tentpoles. But I will go to my grave believing that there are still audiences that want something different. Not to eradicate these type of 3D, blow-up-the-world, ‘Transformers’-type movies. They’re cool, but now it seems like that’s the only thing they’re making.”

Head over to Kickstarter if you want to help Lee make his movie and take a look at the pitch video below.

Oldboy Red Band Trailer – Take a look at Spike Lee’s remake of Park Chan-Wook’s film

July 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As we were promised, the first trailer for Spike Lee’s version of Oldboy has been released, which partially seems to be about trying to assuage fans of Park Chan-Wook’s original that this will be its own beast, while keeping the best bits of the original. To be honest, I don’t think it’s gonna help, as those who love Wook’s Oldboy, really love it and pretty much see Lee’s film as sacrilege, whatever it turns out to be like.

It does look like it might be okay though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. Josh Brolin Is Out Of His Box In The First Oldboy Remake Poster

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oldboy-poster1While there are still a lot of people angry that Hollywood would dare to remake Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy, the fact is that it’s coming, with Spike Lee directing and Josh Brolin starring. Now the first poster and some images (via Facebook) have arrived, which suggest Lee is keen to put his own stamp on the film.

Indeed it makes it all look a little strange and mysterious. We’ll be able to get a better feel for the movie on Wednesday, which is when the first trailer is due.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. Spike Lee Takes On Gold

May 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spike-leeA couple of years ago, Michael Mann was planning to direct a movie called Gold, but he left the project behind quite a while ago. Now Spike Lee is taking it on, according to TheWrap, with Paul Haggis (Crash) on board as a producer.

The film is about a real-life story from 1993, following ‘following a rough-around-the-edges prospector who stumbles onto one of the largest gold mines in the world in the Indonesian jungle.’ However this turned into a scandal after the Bre-X Mineral Corporation made false claims about the gold.

There’s no news on when the movie might shoot.

Great New Posters For 300 Rise Of An Empire, Oldboy & R.I.P.D.

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

300-rise-of-an-empire-poster1
New posters have emerged for three films that have slightly got lost in the shuffle as the studio concentrate on their biggest summer tentpole flicks. Even so, there are a lot of people out there waiting for 300: Rise Of An Empire, R.I.P.D. and Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy.

300 director Zack Snyder tweeted the Rise Of An Empire poster (he’s producing and writing this time around, with Noam Murro directing). The follow-up stars Sullivan Stapleton as General Themistokles, who attempts to unite all of Greece in battle against the evil Persian ruler Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). The film hits cinemas this August.

R.I.P.D. follows a recently killed beat cop (Ryan Reynolds) who joins the Rest In Peace Department, where undead police patrol the underworld. He agrees to 100 years service in return for a shot at getting the guy who killed him, and is teamed with an old gunslinger (Jeff Bridges), who’s been dead hundreds of years. Robert Luketic directs, with a July US release date set (there’s no official UK date yet).

Oldboy follows an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley and Samuel L. Jackson also star. It’ll be in cinemas this autumn.
