Martin Freeman Joins Captain America: Civil War In A Mystery Role

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martin-FreemanWith his trip to the Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit over, Martin Freeman is heading in a different direction by signing up for Captain America: Civil War, according to an announcement by Marvel.

There’s no news though on who he might be playing, although I think it’s safe to say he won’t be a Halfling with hairy feet, or indeed the companion of a super-genius detective. There’s also no hint on whether his deal is just for a single movie, or if this will set up his character for further films, either on the side of good or of evil.

My bet would be the latter, especially with the recent news that Civil War will directly set up the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Another interesting possibility is that he could also appear in Doctor Strange, which would reunite him with his Sherlock co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch.

In the comics, the Civil War storyline centres around the Superhero Registration Act, which demands that those with super-human powers register themselves with and serve the US government. Steve Rogers is unimpressed by this and rebels against it, while Tony Stark (yep Robert Downey Jr. is back) thinks it’s a good idea. As a result the various heroes split into factions that ending up doing battle with one another.

The movie’s due out May 6th, 2016.

Spider-Man Is Joining The Marvel Cinematic Universe

February 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spider-manIt sounds a bit ridiculous that a movie that grossed $700 million was considered a flop, but Sony was banking massively on The Amazing Spider-man 2, and unfortunately despite making more money than most people could ever dream of, it was considered a disappointment.

Indeed its lack of ‘success’ led Sony and Marvel to start chatting seriously about a full-fledged crossover last year (small ones has previously been discussed but never came to fruition), but those talks fell through. At the time most people thought that the whole idea was dead and it was a pipe dream anyway that Spider-man would become part of Disney Marvel’s cinematic universe. After all, it’s rare for two entertainment behemoths to team up in that way, especially as Sony wouldn’t countenance anything that allowed Marvel final say over Spider-man while they owned the rights, which would inevitably cause issues fitting him into their superhero universel.

However now to many people’s surprise it’s going to happen, with the two studios announcing that a new Spider-man (Andrew Garfield is unlikely to return) will appear in an upcoming Marvel movie, before getting his own film on July 28th, 2017. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the assumption is the Marvel film will be Captain America: Civil War, as Spider-man played a major role in that storyline in the comics.

Together, the studios will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger, but Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

To show this really is a collaboration and not something that will see the two studios competing, Marvel has also moved many of its other movies out of the way of the standalone Spider-man film. As a result, Thor: Ragnarok has been moved from July 2017 to November 2017, Black Panther goes from October 2017 to July 2018, Captain Marvel will reach cinemas November 2018 instead of July 2018, while Inhumans is headed for July 2019 from its original October 2018 date.

Sony meanwhile has delayed its Sinister Six movie – which was due to be the beginning of its own Spider-man extended universe. They still hope to make the movie, but it will have to wait until the new direction for Spidey is fully worked out.

Daniel Bruhl Joins Captain America: Civil War (& Possibly Doctor Strange) In A Villainous Role

November 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Daniel-BruhlIt’s always busy in the world of Marvel, and with Avengers 2 and Ant Man wrapped and now in post-production, they’re already hard at work on putting the pieces together for Captain America: Civil War. Now another has slotted into place with the company revealing they’ve added Daniel Bruhl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds).

There’s no news on exactly who he’ll play, although most sources suggest he’s take on a villainous role in the movie – even with that, there’s disagreement over whether he’ll be the main villain or not.

Some have also linked to announcement to the related rumour that the Doctor Strange villain will be introduced in Civil War, and that this is the role Bruhl has signed on to play. At the moment this seems like the most likely scenario.

Anthony and Joe Russo return to direct, with a May 6th, 2016 release set.

Robert Downey Jr. Coming Back For Captain America 3 & He’s Set To Start A Civil War

October 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iron-man-3-downey-jrWhile Robert Downey Jr. was always going to return for a third Avengers film after next year’s Age Of Ultron, but until recently all suggestions had been that other than that he was hanging up the exo-suit.

However recently he suggested that against all odds he may well make an Iron Man 4 too, and now Variety reports he’s set to be a huge part of Captain America 3.

It would seem that what’s convinced Downey to remain a major part of the Marvel world (other than the gargantuan pay deal he’s negotiating, said to be $40 million plus profit participation) is that it will allow him to be central to a massive development in the comic book universe – the eruption of Civil War, which it seems will start in Captain America 3.

That means it won’t just be Batman Vs. Superman pitted against each other in 2016, as the Civil War storyline in the Marvel Comics centres around the Superhero Registration Act, which demands that those with super-human register themselves with and serve the US government. Steve Rogers is unimpressed by this and rebels against it, while Tony Stark thinks it’s a good idea. As a result the various heroes split into factions that ending up doing battle with one another.

It means that in Captain America 3, Stark is likely to be close to being the villain, although we’re sure they won’t make him too bad.

There are also rumours that Anthony Russo and Joe Russo won’t just direct Cap 3, but will also take over from Joss Whedon for Avengers 3 & 4, but at the moment that is far from being confirmed. Captain America 3 is due out May 6th, 2016.

Captain America & Batman Vs. Superman Release Date Showdown Set

March 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-2-final-poster-slideA couple of days ago, Marvel head Kevin Fiege was talking about the fact that DC had moved its planned Batman Vs. Superman onto a release date that was already occupied by a then unknown Marvel movie. Fiege said they weren’t backing off the date, although wouldn’t be drawn on what the film they were making actually was.

Now we know, as THR reports that it’s Captain America 3 that’s set to be released on the same day as Batman Vs. Superman on May 6th, 2016.

So the current question is whether you would prefer to swoon at Henry Cavill or Chris Evans.

It’s turning into a massive game of chicken, as neither studio wants to end up losing audience to the other, but equally both wants to show its film is the most important and should get the prime Memorial Day release. There’s a chance both films will indeed come out on that day, although with more than two years to go, there’s a greater chance that either Marvel or DC will find an excuse to move to another date.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are confirmed to return for Captain America 3, although it’s not known exactly when it will shoot. It’s likely to be early next year.

Captain America 3 Already In The Works With Joe & Anthony Russo Set To Return To Direct

January 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-2-chris-evansIt’s still a couple of months until Captain America: The Winter Soldier is being released, but Marvel must be confident it’s going to be a success. It’s not that surprising that Marvel is already thinking about Captain America 3, but it certainly suggests they reckon the second instalment is shaping up to be good as they’ve already attached to directors of Winter Soldier, Joe and Anthony Russo, to helm.

Variety has the news that the Russo’s will probably be back, although they caution that official negotiations about their return won’t happen until after Winter Soldier’s release. However great test screening results for Cap 2 has ensured Marvel has moved to attach them to a third film.

There’s no news on when we might see the film. It’ll be a couple of years at least, as not only do we have Winter Soldier, but Captain America will also appear in Avengers: Age Of Ultron before he gets another standalone adventure.

Winter Soldier hits UK cinemas on March 28th and US theatre on April 4th.
