Win Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows On Blu-ray

May 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows is available on Blu-ray Triple play, DVD and digital download 14th May. Pre-order here. And we’ve got hold of a copy of the film on Blu-ray for you to win!

Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room… until now. Filmmaker Guy Ritchie returns to direct Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which stars two-time Academy Award® nominees Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law along with Rachel McAdams, Kelly Reilly, Eddie Marsan, Geraldine James, Jared Harris, Stephen Fry, and Noomi Rapace.

Around the globe, headlines break the news: a scandal takes down an Indian cotton tycoon; a Chinese opium trader dies of an apparent overdose; bombings in Strasbourg and Vienna; the death of an American steel magnate… no one sees the connective thread between these seemingly random events—no one, that is, except the great Sherlock Holmes, who has discerned a deliberate web of death and destruction. At its center sits a singularly sinister spider: Moriarty.

Holmes’ investigation into Moriarty’s plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, and moving perilously close to completing his ominous plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history. Read our review here.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (Blu-ray)

May 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Kelly Reilly, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Guy Ritchie
Running Time: 129 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 14th, 2012

All the way through 2010’s Sherlock Holmes, a shadowy figure lurked in the background who seemed to have a finger in every pie and used the mayhem Sherlock was involved with to his own ends.  In A Game Of Shadows that figure steps forward, with Jared Harris as Professor James Moriarty, who is Sherlock’s intellectual equal, even if he uses his brains for very different ends.

A series of explosions is rocking Europe and threaten to destabilise the already tenuous peace between the nations, with war a very real possibility. As you’d expect, Sherlock is soon deep in this conspiracy and has very quickly worked out that Moriarty is involved. However it’s not enough to know who’s behind it, as there’s no tangible evidence. As a result Holmes must investigate and work out Moriarty’s end game in order to stop the villain. [Read more…]

Underworld Awakening Tops The US Box Office

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Despite a critical drubbing and worries about franchise fatigue, Underworld Awakening has fought through to top the US box office in its first weekend, taking a respectable $25.4 million. That’s a little ahead on Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, although that movie didn’t have Kate Beckinsale or a boost from premium price 3D ticket sales.

Red Tails also got off to a stronger start than many had expected, with the George Lucas produced movie taking $19.1 million. Although not amazing, many saw it as a very risky venture, with Lucas funding the entire project himself because no studio would touch a WWII movie with an all-black cast. Although the film’s still got a long way to go to make Lucas back his $70 million plus, it’s on the right track.

Doing less well was the expansion of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which went from a few screens to over 2,000, but only took $10.5 million. While that wouldn’t be too bad for most dramas, it makes it the least attended movie for either Tom Hanks or Sandra Bullock in 15 years. However with bad reviews and a marketing campaign that never seemed certain what the movie was, it’s perhaps not surprising the movie has faltered.

The only other new entry was Haywire, which took fifth spot with $9 million. That’s about in line with several other female oriented action movies, such as Hanna, but it’s not a great start. It doesn’t help that despite seeming to go down okay with the critics, audiences coming out of screenings don’t seem to like it much, and so word of mouth is likely to be lousy.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend on January 20th-22nd.

Contraband Tops The US MLK Weekend Box Office

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although Martin Luther King Day is a four day weekend in the US, it isn’t one of the particularly big holidays for cinema-going. That said, the Mark Wahlberg starring Contraband did pretty well, scoring a $28.8 million debut to top the chart.

It beat out the 3D re-release of Beauty and The Beast, which made $23.5 million. Although not as big as the opening of The Lion King a few months ago, considering that the film (including the 3D version) has been available to buy of DVD and Blu-ray for ages – unlike Lion King – it’s a pretty impressive take.

The only other new entry was the Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah starring Joyful Noise, which took the number four spot with $13.7 million. Outside the top 10, The Iron Lady got a big boost when it expanded from five to 800 screens, taking $6.4 million and finishing in 11th place on the chart.

The Devil Inside Tops The US Box Office

January 9, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Paramount’s decision to set up a unit to make and purchase micro-budget genre movies for under a million dollars certainly seems to be paying off. They decided on the strategy following the success of Paranormal Activity, and with The Devil Inside it’s working far better than they expected.

The studio predicted an $8-$10 million opening for the horror film (which they bought for only a million), but in the end they got a $34 million weekend, which is the most any film has ever opened to in early January. It’s an impressive achievment, which many believe is down to a good marketing campaign that attracted young men, who’ve been conspicuous by their absence at the box office recently.

There were no other new openers in the top 10, although Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy made its first appearance in the top 10 after it expanded from 50 to over 800 screens. The movie added another $5 million to place ninth, and with the per screen average holding up extremely well during its expansion, it could become a significant indie hit as the awards season gears up.

Ghost Protocol Top New Year’s US Box Office

January 3, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If the studios were hoping for some four-day holiday New Year’s cheer at the box office, they didn’t get a huge amount, with Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol the only real bright spot. The overall box office was down over last New Year, but Ghost Protocol added another $38 million to take its total to $14 million in the US and $361 million worldwide. It’s a decent hit but not astounding.

There were no new entries, with just a few films shifting about. Among the Christmas openers, War Horse is doing best, moving up from sixth to fourth place on the chart (and it should be noted its sixth place finish last weekend was after only two days in cinemas). Other films such as Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and We Bought A Zoo continued to do modest but not horrific business.

It’s Tintin though that’s be the biggest failure, only making $50 million so far in the US, despite finding success in other parts of the world.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 30th-January 2nd.

Mission: Impossible Tops The Christmas US Box Office

December 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Christmas US box office is slightly unusual, as while it was a holiday four-day weekend, rather than releasing movie on a Friday, many of the studios decided to either release their movie early or wait until Christmas itself, largely because they now Christmas Eve always tends to be an unsually weak day (whereas Saturday is normally the best day of the week). The result is that while some of these new films movies got off to decent starts, they couldn’t beat out previously released flicks.

The chart topper was Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which is shaping up to be a decent blockbuster for Paramount. Expanding into normal cinemas after its IMAX start last weekend, the movie took a strong $46 million over the Christmas weekend, and should take a lot more leading into New Year..

The top new entry was at number four, with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo taking $19.4 million over the weekend following its release in the middle of last week. It’s an okay start for a rather serious, R-rated movie, but the studio was hoping that with David Fincher at the helm it would really hit it big.

The Adventures Of Tintin came in fifth with $16.1 million, which is a disappointment after the movie hit it big in the rest of the world, having already grossed $239 million internationally. We Bought A Zoo came next with $15.6 million, which is lower than had been hoped for, but it’s rather early to say if it can make up ground over the coming days.

Spielberg’s War Horse didn’t get released until Sunday, so it’s two-day take of $15.0 million isn’t too bad at all, especially for a period war movie. Many are thinking the film could well turn into a decent sized hit and will end up as the highest grossing of the Christmas releases. The final new entry was the sci-fi flick The Darkest Hour, which took a weak $5.5 million.

Overall the box office was up on last year, which will be a relief to Hollywood after several weeks where things have been in the doldrums. However, many have been predicting problems due to the fact the release schedule is ridiculously packed. It certainly seems that with so much competition, the new movies (and indeed the holdovers) have all opened lower than they might have if they’d had a clearer run.

Take a look below for the Christmas 2011 US box office top 10.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol $46.2 $78.6

Sherlock Holmes 2 Tops The US Box Office

December 19, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If Hollywood was hoping for a little pre-Christmas cheer, it didn’t get much over the weekend, after disappointing debuts for two movies there’d been high hopes for. Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows topped the chart with $40 million, more than $20 million down on the first movie’s take during Christmas 2009. It’s even lower than Tron: Legacy, which opened to weak reviews this weekend last year.

As A Game Of Shadows had good reviews and strong word of mouth, it’s not certain what happened to the audience (Warner Bros had been expecting a $50 million+ opening), but it does suggest it’s not just a dearth of decent films that’s causing people to stay away from the multiplex.

Doing even worse was Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which took $23.5 million, less than half what it’s predescessor made.

The one bright spot at the US box office was Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which took $13 million in limited released on only 425 IMAX and large screens cinemas. While it suggests the film will do well when it expands onto normal screens later this week, some may worry that the IMAX numbers were heavily skewed by the inclusion of a six-minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises, and that without that (it won’t be included in normal cinemas), it’s still difficult to know just how well the new Mission: Impossible movie will do.

Hollywood is likely to be worrying a lot at the moment. Studios have spent more than $600 million on movies being released in December, and so far every weekend has been significantly down on the comparable weekend from a year ago. They’re going to be hoping for a stellar period between Christmas and New Year to make up lost ground or it’s going to be a very bad end to a very up and down year.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (Cinema)

December 13, 2011 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Jude Law, Jared Harris, Noomi Rapace, Stephen Fry, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Guy Ritchie
Running Time: 128 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: December 16th, 2011

This sequel has a lot of expectations to live up to. The first Guy Ritchie directed Sherlock Holmes amassed over $524 million at the worldwide box office and remains in the Top 100 grossing films of all time.

As you’d hope, in Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows the original bromance is back with a vengeance! Guy Ritchie has delivered once again (after a few turkeys mind!), as the on-screen chemistry between Jude Law and Robert Downey Jnr. is superb – reminiscent of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The supporting cast is also tremendous in their roles, although some of the parts are just too small. Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade is most notably missing screen time – blink and you’ll miss him – as is the excellent Geraldine James as the long-suffering Mrs Hudson (though I can’t help but think of her as one of the prostitutes from Band Of Gold!).
