The Falls: Covenant Of Grace (US DVD Review) – Can gay Mormons RJ and Chris finally make it work?

January 9, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Benjamin Farmer, Bruce Jennings, Curtis Edward Jackson, Nick Ferrucci
Director: Jon Garcia
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: December 6th 2016 (US)

Not many gay films get a sequel and even fewer have become a trilogy, but The Falls has now done just that. The first movie followed young RJ (Nick Ferrucci) and Chris (Benjamin Farmer), who fall in love during their Mormon mission, knowing that they risk being thrown out of their religion if their relationship is discovered. The follow-up, The Falls: Testament Of Love, picked up the story several years later, with RJ living a gay life but Chris back deep in the closet, with a wife and child, trying to live a ‘good’ Mormon life.

Things still aren’t completely running smooth when The Falls: Covenant Of Grace opens. Chris is now out of his marriage, but he and Chris are still having difficulty sorting out where their relationship stands and where it’s going in the future, especially as they’re living in different parts of the country. After the Church of Latter-Day Saints announces that it isn’t just against the baptism of children of same-sex couples, but doesn’t think their kids should be welcomed into the Church at all, RJ and Chris decide to get together for the weekend in the hope figuring out where they stand. The Falls: Testament Of Love Trailer – First look at the gay mormon sequel

September 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac 7 Comments

Back in April we reported that director Jon Garcia was seeking funding for a follow-up to his great gay-themed flick, The Falls. Well, he got the cash and the movie will premiere on October 5th at the Portland Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, with a US DVD release set for November.

The first film followed young Mormon missionaries RJ and Chris, who fall for one another despite the fact they know they risk excommunication if their relationship is discovered.

The sequel, ‘picks up five years after the doomed romance between Mormon missionaries RJ and Chris. Though their lives have taken radically different paths, the death of a mutual friend unexpectedly reunites the two men at a time when both are attempting to establish their adult lives. As old feelings of love and regret are rekindled, RJ and Chris must once again confront their seemingly impossible love. Will their reunion prove that they’re fated to be together, or is it merely a temporary fantasy?’

The trailer makes it seem like it’ll be well worth a look, with one of the men having embraced his sexuality, while the other has put the church first and done his best to be straight, complete with wife and kid.

Starring: Nick Ferrucci, Quinn Allan, Brian Allard, Benjamin Farmer
Director: Jon Garcia
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 14th 2013

RJ (Nick Ferrucci) is a high school athlete who’s now out of education and keen to take on missionary work, spreading the word of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of The Latter Day Saints (aka Mormons). It’s something many thousands of young Mormons do, so RJ heads away from home and gets paired with Chris (Ben Farmer).

Together they are tasked with going out and spreading the word, trying to get as many people interested in their religion as possible, with the hope the newcomers will eventually be baptised as Mormons. Although they initially take to their task with fervour, Chris soon begins to flag and doubt whether they’re doing the right thing. Slowly the two young men fall for one another – something that’s particularly difficult in their church, which is deeply homophobic. [Read more…]
