Love or Whatever Trailer – A gay guy has to start over when his boyfriend dumps him for a woman in the new comedy

March 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are an awful lot of gay-themed movies about men in relationships with women who end up going off with a guy, but what about the other way around? After all, it’s not unheard of. That’s the premise for Love Or Whatever, which you can watch the trailer for above.

I’m a Porn Star Trailer – Why do guys decide to do the gay nasty on screen? (NSFW)

March 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

im-a-porn-star-cover
A quick look at the internet will tell you there isn’t a shortage of guys prepared to strip down and show everything they’ve got in the world of porn. But who are these people and why do they decide to do it? If is fun? Are they nympho perverts? Are they desperate for cash and will do anything to get it?

While there’s been a fair amount of attention paid to female porn stars – with opinions ranging from it being empowering to the exploitation of desperate and damaged women (it all depends on what the people looking wanted to find, funnily enough) – there have been fewer looks at the men of gay porn.

The documentary I’m A Porn Star attempts to redress the balance, and on the evidence of this trailer, wants to do so in a sexy way! It also suggests that with so much porn on the internet, those involved in the industry may not be as far away as you might have thought. It also includes interviews with the likes gay porn luminaries Brent Everett, Colby Jansen and Johnny Rapid.

An August US release has been set, and as you might have hoped there’s a warning that ‘This documentary is meant for adults and contains some scenes of graphic sexuality. Viewer discretion is advised.’ But I’m sure you’d only be interested in the more philosophical aspects of the doc, of course.

Take a look at the NSFW trailer below. [Read more…]

Man At Bath (Homme Au Bain) Trailer – Francois Sagat goes legit actor in the gay-themed drama

March 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Francois Sagat made a major splash in gay porn, but anyone who’s seen the recent documentary about him, Sagat, will know he’s a man who sees himself as a bit of an artist with his sex scenes being an extension of that. Now he’s branching out into legit acting with a lead role in Man At Bath, and we can get our first look at him in the movie with a trailer.

The Normal Heart Teaser Trailer – Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch and co. take on Larry Kramer’s classic play

March 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several years in development, The Normal Heart is finally on its way, with Glee’s Ryan Murphy directing an all-star cast for a film that will first air on HBO in the US on May 25th. It looks like it’s gonna be pretty good, with the movie bringing out the fear and confusion present in Larry Kramer’s classic play about the early days of AIDS, before those affected decide to fight back against a system that is almost as afraid of the type of people often affected by HIV as it is of the disease itself.

Mark Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which later was called HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matt Bomer is Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover. Jonathan Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. He later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

The rest of the world should get to see The Normal Heart shortly after its US HBO debut. [Read more…]

Annie Trailer – Cameron Diaz & Quvenzhané Wallis have a hard knock life

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The new version of Annie has always been slightly intriguing, with the 80s movie that was set in the 1930s brought up to date, with Will Smith and Jay-Z both involved with updating the score. Now we get out first taste of the movie, which seems keen to suggest that despite the shift in time, it’s not going to be too far from the musical many know and love – the sun will still be coming out tomorrow and it remains a hard knock life.

The plot also remains the same, with orphan Annie (Quvenzhane Wallis) having a hard-luck life in the foul orphanage run by Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). She’s then taken in by the filthy rich Benjamin Stacks (Jamie Foxx). In this version he’s running for office and initially just wants Annie so the press will se him being nice to an orphan, but he soon falls for the plucky youngster’s charms. And then Annie’s real parents are found, or are they?

Will Gluck is directing from his own screenplay, which was originally written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Emma Thompson. Annie is currently set for release December 25th, 2014. [Read more…]

Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four – Documentary about women accused of being lesbian, Satanic, child molesters

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the 1980s and 1990s there was a spate of accusations and prosecution based around the idea that children had been abused (or even murdered) as part of Satanic Rituals. These investigations often involved entire communities, resulting in numerous people being convicted and imprisoned.

However nearly all these cases have since been debunked, with virtually no evidence Satanic abuse ever took place (and tragically it often stemmed from individual children who were abused, whose suffering got swept up in hysteria that enveloped other children and adults who had nothing to do with it).

It is perhaps not too surprising that those who were primed to see Satanic abuse were often keen to see it amongst those living ‘alternate lifestyle’. This hysteria resulted in four Texan women, all lesbians, spending 15 years in prison. They were eventually freed ahead of an appeal, with the State dropping the case against them after they admitted that the medical evidence used to convict them was indefensible in court.

The documentary Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four looks at the story, and you can watch the trailer here. Work In Progress screenings of the film are currently underway. [Read more…]

The Circle Trailer – Love and passion in the early days of the European gay movement

March 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a tendency to think gay rights started at Stonewall and before that, there was absolutely nothing. However before the riots on Christopher Street, various organisations in different countries laid the groundwork for the emergence of the gay rights battles. Whether it was the Mattachine Society in the US, the Minorities Research Group in the UK or the Swiss journal Der Kreis, there was social and political movement for gay people for several decades before 1969.

The new film, The Circle, looks at Der Kreis, which was the only gay publication in Europe to publish during the Nazi era (interestingly Germany had been home to several gay groups that had seen quite a lot of success in the Weimar era, but they were brutally suppressed once Hitler took over).

Here’s the movie’s synopsis: ‘Zürich in the mid 50’s: The young shy teacher Ernst Ostertag becomes a member of the gay organization DER KREIS. There he gets to know the transvestite star Röbi Rapp — and immediately falls head over heels in love with him.

‘Röbi and Ernst live through the high point and the eventual decline of the organization, which in the whole of Europe is seen as the pioneer of gay emancipation. Ernst finds himself torn between his bourgeois existence and his commitment to homosexuality, for Röbi it is about his first serious love relationship. A relationship which will last a lifetime.

‘The film looks back from the present to the time when the „Mother” of all European homosexual organizations had its high point to the time it slowly fell apart. While the repression against homosexuals became increasingly more intense in Zurich, two young and very different men fight for their love and — together with their friends — for the rights of gays.’

Following its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the movie is currently screening at film festivals. [Read more…]
