James Franco May Play Man Who Went From LGBT Rights Fighter To Ex-Gay Activist

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-franco-600pxJames Franco is turning his back on the gays! Well, no, he isn’t, but he may be playing a character who does. The NY Post reports that Franco is teaming with director Gus Van Sant to make a movie about the controversial Michael Glatze.

Glatze started out as a young gay man who was passionate about helping LGBT youth, including marching in gay rights rallies and urging young people to celebrate their non-traditional sexualities. He also launched the magazine Young Gay America after working at XY, becoming a leading voice in the gay rights fight.

However in 2004 he had a health scare involving a possible heart defect, which caused him to turn to conservative Christianity. Shortly afterwards he completely renounced everything he had previously stood for and said that he was now ‘ex-gay’.

In 2007 he wrote in a WorldNetDaily article that, “Homosexuality, delivered to young minds, is by its very nature pornographic.” Shortly afterwards he revealed that he was “repulsed to think about homosexuality” and that he was “going to do what I can to fight it.”

He has been rather changeable though (as if he’s still searching for something), briefly becoming a Mormon as well as occasionally seeming to slightly soften his stance by talking about bisexuality and fluid sexuality. He’s currently married to a woman and perhaps most surprisingly of all, despite this entire journey he’s still only 38.

The movie will be made on a budget of $3.5 million, with the hope of shooting in New York in July. It’ll be interesting to see which way Van Sant takes it, as while gay himself he is known for having a bit of a counterculture penchant, leaving some to wonder if he will use Glatze’s story to pick apart gay assimilation. More like though it will be more the tale of a man’s tragic fall. Either way, as Glatze hasn’t (yet) decided gays are ok after all, it’s unlikely to have a happy ending.

Ben Stiller In Talks To Play Gay Choreographer In Alan Ball’s I Am Chippendales

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben-StillerSince the success of Magic Mike, the film world has known there’s a market out there for movies about male strippers. Now Ben Stiller may be starring in one, as Variety reports that he is circling I Am Chippendales, with American Beauty and True Blood’s Alan Ball set to write and direct.

The movie is based on the true story of how Paul Snider, Somen “Steve” Banerjee and lawyer Bruce Nahin founded the Chippendales nightclub. However after initial massive success, things rather went to Banerjee’s head as he helped orchestrate a plot to murder of three former Chippendales dancers he thought were now in competition with him, as well as attempting to have Chippendales co-founder, Bruce Nahin, killed.

He pleaded guilty to attempted arson, racketeering and murder for hire charges.

If a deal is finalized, Ben Stiller will play choreographer Nick DeNoia, who helped conceive the idea of the Chippendales, helping turn the male dance club into an international sensation. However DeNoia ended up being one of the people Banerjee wanted dead.

Banerjee was known for being incredibly flamboyant and sharp, not putting up with any dancer who didn’t meet his exacting dimensions. It’s also believed he slept with more than a few, although due to the fact this was the 80s and the Chippendales were so determined they were for female rather than gay eyes, there was also a lot of homophobia around. It’s now known exactly how the film will deal with all this, but as Alan Ball is gay himself and has dealy with LGBT themes throughout his career, it probably won’t shy away from it.

Ball is directing from his own screenplay, which is adapted from Rodney Sheldon’s book. It’s not known when it will shoot.

First Official Look At Neil Patrick Harris In Hedwig And The Angry Inch

March 31, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hedwig-neil-patrick-harrisHedwig And The Angry Inch is awesome – anyone who has seen John Cameron’s Mitchell’s film version can attest to that – but it’s never been staged on Broadway. Until now, that is!

The previews of the new version with Neil Patrick Harris in the lead role have now begun and the first official image has been released via EW. He’s certainly looking good as the transgender rocker. It’s certainly a different look, as he says, “I’ve lost 20 pounds. I’m in the craziest couture outfits, and I’ve got all this makeup on. But they made me custom heels, so at least those fit well.”

In the musical NPH plays the East German title character, who was left with an angry inch after a botched sex change operation. Hedwig then starts dating young Tommy Gnosis, who leaves her behind when he takes her music and becomes a rock star – leaving her understandably bitter but still very funny.

The show opens properly at New York’s Belasco Theatre on April 22nd.

British Gay-Themed Film The Only Colour Is Black Seeks Funding

March 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-only-colour-is-black-slideWe cover quite a few filmmakers on BGPS who are looking for money to get their gay-themed movie made on crowdfunding platforms, however few of them have been from our own backyard, the UK. However now one has come along which is indeed British and is hoping to raise £80,000 to get their movie made!

So what’s the movie about? Well here’s what the Kickstarter has to say: ‘Syd is an inspector in the police force and lives a lie. He may have a good job but it’s not really him. He may be married to a successful career woman but that’s not for him either. His mind and life have been taken over by a young black man who he briefly met and now spends his days searching the streets of London trying to find.’

The makers are keen to state though that, ‘This film is not just for gay or niche audiences, it is a film that appeals to anyone who has ever found themselves wanting someone that they may not be able to have. It is a film for anyone who has ever been brave enough to question the life that they have may not be the one they really wanted.’

If the movie can raise its funding, the hope is to shoot the movie this August. So if you’d like to help out this first movie from Portobello Road Films, head over to Kickstarter. and you can find out more on the The Only Colour Is Black website.

Sally Field Pens Heartfelt Open Letter About Having A Gay Son

March 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sally-field-and-sonYou gotta love Sally Field. Even before she knew her son was gay she wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she thought was right, and since her kid came out she’s become an outspoken and and fierce supporter of both him and all LGBT people.

Her actions won her the Human Rights Campaign’s Ally for Equality Award in 2012, and has never shied away from saying what she though parents of gay children can and should do for their kids.

Now she’s at it again, as in support of the Human Rights Campaign’s battle against the various “license to discriminate” bills (which seek to allow businesses to specifically disciminate against LGBTQ people, usually on religious grounds), she has penned an open letter about the difficulties her son Sam faced.

She writes: ‘The three things I’m most proud of in my life are my sons, Peter, Eli and Sam. They are kind, loving and productive people. Each with their own list of talents and accomplishments. Sam is my youngest son, by 18 years, and he’s gay. To that, I say: So what? Growing up, Sam wanted desperately to just be like his older brothers – athletic, rambunctious and even a little bit macho. He wanted to beat Eli at tennis, trounce Peter at computer football and learn everything about every basketball player on the court. But Sam was different. And his journey to allow himself to be what nature intended him to be was not an easy one. When I saw him struggling, I wanted to jump in. But his older brothers held me back. They told me I couldn’t travel that road for Sam. It was his to travel, not mine. I had to wait for him to own himself in his own time. I could make it easier only by standing visibly to the side, clearly loving him, always being there and always letting him know.

‘Finally, at 20, long after he beat his brothers at tennis and computer games and knew as much as anyone about basketball, Sam was able to stand up proudly and say, “I am a gay man.”

‘One of the great privileges of my life to have been allowed to be a part of Sam’s journey.

‘There are people out there – organizations and politicians, strangers who have never even met Sam – who would rather devote themselves to denying his happiness.

‘Why would anyone want to prevent my son—or anyone’s son or daughter—from having basic legal safeguards like family medical leave, Social Security survivors benefits, or health insurance? It doesn’t make any sense—but it won’t change until people speak out. I’m proud to stand with HRC to add my voice. Will you join me?

‘Whether you are LGBT yourself, a parent or grandparent of an LGBT child, or just a great person with strong convictions about what’s fair and right, I hope I’ve convinced you to stand with HRC for equality. You’ll be glad you did!’

HRC is hoping to raise money to fight the discriminatory laws, so head here if you want to help out.

Ellen Page May Be John Belushi’s Wife Alongside Emile Hirsch In A New Biopic

March 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ellen-Page
A couple of months ago Emile Hirsch and Miles Teller signed on to star in a biopic of legendary comic John Belushi. Now it’s time for the movie to get a bit of female energy, as TheWrap reports that Ellen Page is in talks to play Judith Jacklin, John Belushi’s wife.

Steve Conrad (The Weather Man) wrote the screenplay and is directing the biopic, which follows John Belushi’s (Emile Hirsch) life until his tragic death at the age of 33 from a heroin overdose. The story is said to be an allegory that illuminates the highs and lows of the American dream.

Teller is set to be Dan Aykroyd, became one of Belushi’s main comedy partners, working with him on Saturday Night Live and making the likes of Blues Brother together.

Jacklin meanwhile was Belushi’s high school girlfriend, who later became his wife. Both Page and Teller will have firsthand experience to draw on as Aykroyd and Judith (who now goes by the surname Belushi-Pisano) are acting as producers.

Travis Mathew’s Gay-Themed In Their Room: Berlin Is Online For Free, But Only For A Limited Time

March 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

in-their-room-berlin-slide
Travis Mathews has been getting a fair amount of attention for his movie I Want Your Love and his collaboration with James Franco, Interior Leather Bar. However for several years he’s been making In Their Room shorts.

He started off with In Their Room: San Francisco in 2009, which was initially just going to be a series of interviews with gay people in their bedrooms talking about their live, but as the project continued it took on a more intimate, sexual dimension. That was followed by 2011’s In Their Room: Berlin, which looked at the gay experience amongst a group of German guys, and most recently In Their Room: London (which Mathews shot while in the UK for a film festival).

While they’ve screened at fests and few of the segments have shown up online, due to their mix of documentary and explicit sexuality it’s been difficult to get them proper distribution. However now porn company NakedSword has stepped forward and put In Their Room: Berlin online for free at www.iwantyourlovethemovie.com – but only until March 30th, after which it will be behind the paywall in the member’s area of the NakedSword site.

NakedSword was the company that backed Mathews I Want Your Love short and followed that up by helping the movie version get made, as no one else was interested in the way he wanted to look at a more realistic depiction of gay sexuality. What the director does is certainly not porn, but because it isn’t afraid to be erotic, it’s not always been easy for him to get backing. That is starting to change though.

If you want to take a look at the 60 minutes of In Their Room: Berlin, go watch while it’s free!

Divergent’s Theo James Hopes To See A Gay Superhero, & Is His Film A Bisexual Allegory?

March 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Theo-JamesDivergent is currently taking the US box office by storm and making a star of Theo James. The actor has been chatting with The Advocate and suggesting that the movie the movie could be a bisexual allegory, and also that he hopes to see a gay superhero on-screen soon.

The movie is about a society where young people are sorted into groups based on their personality traits – however if they fit into more than one category they are ‘divergent’ and considered a threat to the social order. It could certainly be seen as a bisexual allegory, while the idea of those not fitting in being shunned relates to most LGBT people.

James agrees, saying “Yeah,  that’s an interesting parallel to make. I hadn’t connected those dots myself, but there’s definitely truth in there.”

He adds, “The five factions represent the basic levels of conformity and a divergent fits into not one of them, but multiple. Yeah, I can see it. That’s interesting.”

Theo would also be interested in seeing a gay superhero on-screen, but he’s aware that it might be a while until Hollywood feels the same. “It’s very hard to tell,” he says of when it might happen. “Because today there are great shows like Looking, poignant pieces of work that revolve around a central cast of characters that happen to be gay. But I remember when Queer as Folk came out and thinking, ‘Things are changing. Maybe there will be more [shows like this]’. And then suddenly there was a drought. Hopefully the day [we have a gay action hero] isn’t far away.”

First Look At Willem Dafoe As Gay Director Pier Paolo Pasolini

March 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

willem-dafoe-pasolini1
The first pictures of Willem Dafoe as famed gay director Pier Paolo Pasolini have emerged, which you can see above and below.

Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini certainly lived an interesting life, growing up in Mussolini’s Italy (his father actually saved the dictator’s life), becoming a communist before being thrown out after being charged with committing lewd acts in a public place, which was the first of several legal battles, partly based on the Italian government’s initial antipathy to him.

Those lewd act charges also meant that he was out as gay whether he wanted to be or not.

He then became a renowned but controversial director, helming films such as The Decameron, The Gospel According to Matthew and Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom. Tragically in 1975 he was murdered. A 17-year-old rent boy was convicted of the crime, but in recent years there has been speculation he was killed as part of an extortion plot or due to anger at his communist leanings.

The film, Pasolini, follows the directors final days and the confusion over his death. It’s directed by Bad Lieutenant’s Abel Ferrara, who told Variety,  “Seeing Salo was a great moment for me. Pasolini was not just a great film director, he was a philosopher, a poet, a journalist who wrote editorials, a communist but a Catholic who opposed birth control, a radical, a free-thinker on every level. There are not a lot of people about whom you could say that their death changed the course of history, but Pasolini was one.”
