Glee Star Matthew Morrison Donates Proceeds From Pre-Sales Of New Album To Marriage Equality Fight

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As a former Broadway star and now playing Will Schuester on Glee, there’s no doubt that Matthew Morrison has been exposed to plenty of things gay, despite being straight himself. Now he’s speaking out in support of gay marriage and putting his money where his mouth is, by donating part of the proceeds from pre-sales of his new album to the Human Rights Campaign.

Morrison has also made a video for the HRC, which you can watch above. The Human Rights Campaign is the largest LGBT advocacy organization in the US, with the Glee star stepping forward to support their Americans for Marriage Equality campaign.

In a statement, Morrison says, “I’m thrilled to join HRC in their vital work to bring full equality to all Americans. At this decisive moment, when there is so much work still ahead, I’m standing with HRC and LGBT people across the country until this fight is won.”

Morrison’s new solo album, Where it All Began, is out in the US in June. It features an assortment of classic standards, including many from Broadway musicals.

Michael Douglas Banned Giant Penises From Liberace Biopic, Behind The Candelabra!

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

behind-the-candelabra-new-slide
Steven Soderbergh has promised that his Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra won’t shy away from Michael Douglas and Matt Damon getting very gay. Indeed the director recently told THR that, “It’s intimate stuff, even if it was a guy and a girl. But for a lot of people it’ll be hard to see Jason Bourne on top of Gordon Gekko.”

However, while Douglas was fine with kissing an man-on-man sex, there was one thing he thought went too far – 14-inch penises!

In a profile in New York Magazine, he says, “Liberace loved sex, and I didn’t have a problem with that. But, at one point, Steven Soderbergh wanted to show Lee [which is what Liberace was known as to his friends] watching a gay porno. I said, ‘I’d like my kids to see this R-rated movie, but I don’t want to show them a 14-inch dick!’ It was the only thing I objected to, so we cut to different parts of the apartment during the porno… It may not have been 14 inches, but it was huge.”

So if you’d been hoping for full-on porn from the film, you have Douglas to blame for the fact you’re not getting any.

Behind The Candelabra will air on HBO in the US on May 27th, and will reach UK cinemas on June 7th.

Uma Thurman Takes On A Biopic Of Anti-Gay Campaigner Anita Bryant

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

uma-thurmanIn the history of the gay rights struggle, few people have managed to raise the ire of the pro camp more than Anita Bryant, who spent much of the 1970s mounting a very vocal campaign against giving gay people any rights whatsoever.

Now Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (The Celluloid Closet, Howl, Lovelace) are planning a biopic about her, and THR reports they’ve signed up Uma Thurman for the lead role.

Bryant started out as a former Miss Oklahoma who became a singer, scoring a few minor hits in the late 50s and early 60s. After that she was known for starring in commercials, particularly for orange juice. However in the mid-70s she led a campaign against a Dade County, Florida ordinance that would have banned discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

This made her the poster-girl of the anti-gay movement, and for several years afterwards she travelled the country trying to strike down any laws that would make life better for homosexuals. Her name soon became synonymous in the gay community with bigotry and homophobia.

However her campaigning hurt her business interests and entertainment career. She lost her job as the advertising spokeswoman for the Florida Citrus Commission after gay people organised a boycott of orange juice (many bars removed screwdrivers from their menu and replaced it with the ‘Anita Bryant’, which was vodka and apple juice). She also got divorced, which harmed her standing with some fundamentalist Christians, who’d previously been her biggest supporters but many of whom don’t believe in divorce.

By the 1990s attempts to revitalise her career – including opening a venue where she sang and preached about her Christian beliefs – failed and she went bankrupt. Since then, while she’s been less publicly visible, she’s still been active, including heading up her own ministry.

The film’s screenplay comes from Chad Hodge, a gay man who managed to get Bryant to agree to meet with him, despite the fact she’s generally tried to shun the controversies of her past (she hasn’t changed her mind, she just wants to be known for other things). They apparently got on well and he forced her to confront her past. It’s believed the movie will cover both her anti-gay campaigning and this later meeting.

There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Winning Dad Film Hopes To Look At A Post-Marriage Equality World (& Seeks Funding To Do So)

May 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Quite a lot of LGBT-themed film projects come to our attention that are seeking funding on on various crowd-funding platforms, some of which look like they might be better than others. One that does look like it might be pretty good is Winning Dad, which has just launched a Kickstarter campaign looking for $30,000 of funding.

The money will be used to complete principal photography, which is due to begin in July in Washington State.

The film’s synopsis says, ‘Colby’s dad knows his son is gay, but he doesn’t like talking about. He respects it, but ignores everything about that aspect of his son’s life – he doesn’t even know about Colby’s long-term boyfriend, Rusty.

‘Increasingly committed to Rusty, Colby hatches a plan to trick his father into camping with Rusty under the pretense that Rusty is Colby’s straight friend and future business partner. Colby is convinced that, given the chance, his father and his boyfriend will get along great…’ Chuck Sigars, Jake Street, Arthur Allen and Ellen McLain are set to star.

The film will be the directorial debut of Arthur Allen, a Seattle performer who decided to leave the theatre behind during the recession of 2008. After spending some time washing windows on the Space Needle, he decided to join the US Merchant Marine. It was during his years on ships that he wrote Winning Dad – greatly influenced by the male-dominated culture he found there.

The film hopes to take a look at how the narrative of the LGBT struggle in America will change after marriage equality is achieved, as well as tackling the generation gap that divides the country’s stances on issues of LGBT equality. (Washington State began to offer same sex marriage late last year after a popular vote approved the measure).

Director Arthur Allen describes the heart of the film as accepting complexity. “It doesn’t matter what kind complexity we’re talking about. I think that as a country, complexity terrifies us. We like things to be, if not simple, at least consistent, and homosexuality and the entire LGBT spectrum is a direct threat to that because it’s specifically complex, and that’s what the movie is about: finding a gentle way to make everybody comfortable with their own complexity and with other people’s complexity.”

Study Finds Viewers Don’t Care If Gay Actors Play Straight Roles

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Margin CallOne of the barriers to people coming out in Hollywood has been the fear (mainly felt by paranoid producers) that if viewers know an actor is gay, they won’t accept them in straight roles. While many have suggested this isn’t true, the fear of it has been a barrier to both people coming out and gay people getting straight parts (indeed I’ve spoken to actors who’ve had roles withdrawn when they refused to go into the closet).

Now researchers from South Carolina’s Clemson University having been looking at this question, to see whether viewers really do care about the sexuality of an actor on screen. The study, published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture, suggests an actor coming out has no measurable effect on how they are accepted by audiences.

400 college students participated in the study, which involved them answering questions about a male actor’s fictional Facebook page. The page gave them a photograph and basic information, including sexual orientation. They then watched a video of the actor’s performance, before rating the performance and their likelihood of casting the actor if they were putting together a production.

Paul Merritt, a professor in the psychology department at Clemson University commented, “Early research showed that people tend to perceive a direct connection between sexual orientation and established gender roles, especially in the entertainment industry.”

“However, these new findings indicate that knowledge of an actor’s sexual orientation doesn’t necessarily cause their performance to be perceived in light of stereotypes about gays and lesbians.”

While some may suggest the fact the study only included college students may have biased its findings in favour of the sort of people who wouldn’t care about sexuality, it is suggestive that the fears of Hollywood may be unfounded.

Those fears and feelings do exist though, whether valid or not. Rupert Everett has said several times he would advise any actor wanting a major career in America not to come out, as it limits their options. Bret Easton Ellis (who is gay himself) meanwhile sparked controversy last year by saying Matt Bomer was ‘too gay’ to play Christian Grey in the film version of Fifty Shades Of Grey.

There was also anger at Newsweek magazine writer Ramin Setoodeh’s 2010 article ‘Straight Jacket’, which suggested that once people knew an actor was gay, perceptions of their performance changed, and that if they played straight, it felt like they were hiding something. (Once again, Setoodeh is gay).

However as Zachary Quinto acknowledged just last week, he’s ‘only worked more’ since coming out.

Jonathan Groff Starring Gay Friends Series Gets Picked Up By HBO

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonathan-GroffHBO loves getting a bit gay, such as backing LGBT-themed documentaries and funding the Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra. Now it’s going to get a big gayer, as the cable network has ordered eight episodes of a TV series about a group of gay friends living in San Francisco, according to Deadline.

A pilot was recently filmed, starring Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez and Murray Bartlett, ‘who explore the fun and sometimes overwhelming options available to a new generation of gay men.’ Groff plays Patrick, who’s professionally very successful as a video game developer, but his personal life is a bit of a disaster area. Frankie Alvarez is Patrick’s best friend, Augustin, whose ego and feisty politics make it difficult for him to settle down with a boyfriend.

It’s been described as a gay version of Girls.

The show still doesn’t have a name, but I’m sure it will get one soon. It comes from Brothers & Sister creator David Marshall Grant and Bored to Death’s Sarah Condon, based on a film script by Michael Lannan called Lorimer (which was adapted from his own short).

UK Trailer For Behind The Candelabra Concentrates On Matt Damon as Liberace’s Lover

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Steven Soderbergh’s Behind The Candelabra will debut on TV in the US (HBO to be precise), in other countries it’s heading for cinemas. In the UK it’ll hit screens on June 7th, and now a trailer for the British release has been released.

Unlike the HBO promos, this one concentrates more of Matt Damon, who plays Scott Thorson in the film, who becomes legendary pianist Liberace’s much younger lover.

Here’s the official UK synopsis: ‘Before Elvis, before Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was LIBERACE – infamous pianist, outrageous entertainer and flamboyant star of stage and television. A name synonymous with showmanship and extravagance, he lit up every stage he performed on, as bright as his candelabras and with a unique flair that gained him millions of devoted fans across the globe.

‘In the summer of 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson walked into Liberace’s dressing room and, despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair. To the outside world Scott was an employee, at most a friend, but behind closed doors his life with Liberace was an intense rollercoaster of hedonistic fun, flamboyance and excess.

‘Starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as Scott Thorson, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA tells the fascinating true story of their glamorous life together and their tempestuous relationship — from the glitz and glamour of the early days in Las Vegas to their very bitter and public break-up.’

Trailer For Sean Hayes’ New Gay Single Dad Sitcom Debuts

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the weekend, Sean Hayes’ new sitcom, Sean Saves The World, was picked up to air on US TV this autumn. Hayes seems to have spent the last few years trying to escape the shadow of Will & Grace, but now he seems happy to channel his inner Jack, although slight less camp this time around.

Now a trailer and a couple of clips from the sitcom have been released, giving us a look at Hayes as a gay man raising a teenage daughter as a single dad.

To be honest it all looks a little generic, but it could fun. We’ll get to see more later this year.

Gay TV Channel Here TV Goes International With A Paid Youtube Channel

May 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Here-TV-logoOne the things countries such as the UK are severely lacking, is a TV channel for gay people (well, there are gay chat/dating channels and porn, but they don’t really count). The US has been greedy and has got two, the loosely LGBT-centred (but getting less gay) Logo and the more homo-dedicated Here TV.

However now Youtube has announced they’re launching new paid channels, which people can access for a small monthly fee. One of those channels comes from Here TV, and the great news is that it won’t just be available to the US, as content will also be accessible in Canada, Great Britain, Spain, France, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and Brazil.

To subscribe users must sign into a YouTube account on a computer and have a Google Wallet account. Here TV’s channel will then be available for viewing on computers, phones, tablets and TV.

Here TV has promised that titles available on the channel include fan favourites Dante’s Cove and The Lair; the Emmy Award-nominated documentary 30 Years From Here; She’s Living for This, starring drag sensation Sherry Vine; political talk show For & Against, hosted by Jim Morrison; dating and sex advice show Threesome; the marriage equality special Pride & Groom; the network special The Dinah Girls; and many more.

“We are very excited to launch our YouTube paid channel to bring our expansive, original, LGBT programming to a new global viewing platform. With a reach of more than one billion potential customers, Here TV continues to explore and embrace the latest innovations in program distribution to best serve our diverse audience,” says John Mongiardo, Here TV’s Senior Vice President of Programming Operations.

The New Normal Gets Cancelled, But Sean Hayes’ New LGBT-Themed Sitcom Is Picked Up

May 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-new-normal-pic2It’s pretty bad news for gay characters on US TV, as the network axe is falling as they prepare to announce the shows for next season, and LGBT characters aren’t doing well. As THR reports, Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal, about a gay couple and the mother of their surrogate child, has been cancelled. It joins the Michael Urie and David Krumholtz starring Partners, 2012’s other predominantly gay-themed show, which was cancelled earlier in the season.

Smash, which featured four LGBT characters in major role, is ending after two season, while other LGBT friendly shows such as Go On, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 (created by the openly gay Nahnatchka Khan), Malibu Country, 90210, Emily Owens M.D., The Office, L.A. Complex, Happy Endings and Southland are also coming to an end.

Just a few months ago, GLAAD reported that there were more gay characters on American television than ever before, but that’s unlikely to be true now, as while the likes of Glee and Grey’s Anatomy continue, many others gay-friendly shows have been cancelled.

There is one bright spot though, as Sean Saves The World, starring Sean Hayes as an gay dad raising a child as a single father, has been picked up to air this autumn. We also don’t know yet how many gay characters will be featured in the slew of other new shows that the networks are lining up, although it’s difficult to imagine there’ll be as many as there were when last season began.
