Lovelace (DVD)

December 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Juno Temple, Adam Brody, James Franco
Director: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: December 23rd 2013

How do you make a true-tale movie where the facts are in dispute? Well, you either pretend they’re not in dispute, or you try to find a way to suggest you don’t fully know what happened. Or, like Lovelace, you try to do both and trip over yourself in the process.

The film is a biopic of Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried), the star of 70s porn chic hit Deep Throat, which by some reckonings is the most profitable movies ever made on the basis of budget versus its gross – however as much of the cash went through mob-controlled porn theatres, it’s impossible to know how much it actually made. Lovelace Trailer – Amanda Seyfried turns porn legend

July 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lovelace got a slightly mixed reception when it debuted at Sundance, but it certainly tells an interesting tale and has a great cast, including Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Juno Temple, Sharon Stone, Chris Noth, Adam Brody, Hank Azaria, Wes Bentley, James Franco and Chloe Sevigny.

Now a new trailer and a UK quad poster have arrived, ahead on the film’s August release.

The film is a biopic of Linda Lovelace, who’s a fascinating figure far beyond the titilation of being the star of one of the best known porn films in history – Deep Throat. Initially appearing in hardcore (and even bestiality) movies, at first Lovelace seemed to revel in her status. However during her divorce from Chuck Traynor in the late 70s, she claimed that he was violent and had forced her into pornography at gunpoint (with some evidence to back her up).

While there have been some disagreements as to the extent Lovelace was a willing participant in her porn career, there seems little doubt that her marriage to Traynor was viscious and cruel. She then became an anti-pornography champion, speaking at public events and testifying at government hearings on pornography. However she later said she felt used by the anti-pornography movement, which got a lot mileage out of having Lovelace as a convert, but which never helped her out. She died in a car accident in 2002.

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl) direct.

Uma Thurman Takes On A Biopic Of Anti-Gay Campaigner Anita Bryant

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

uma-thurmanIn the history of the gay rights struggle, few people have managed to raise the ire of the pro camp more than Anita Bryant, who spent much of the 1970s mounting a very vocal campaign against giving gay people any rights whatsoever.

Now Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (The Celluloid Closet, Howl, Lovelace) are planning a biopic about her, and THR reports they’ve signed up Uma Thurman for the lead role.

Bryant started out as a former Miss Oklahoma who became a singer, scoring a few minor hits in the late 50s and early 60s. After that she was known for starring in commercials, particularly for orange juice. However in the mid-70s she led a campaign against a Dade County, Florida ordinance that would have banned discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

This made her the poster-girl of the anti-gay movement, and for several years afterwards she travelled the country trying to strike down any laws that would make life better for homosexuals. Her name soon became synonymous in the gay community with bigotry and homophobia.

However her campaigning hurt her business interests and entertainment career. She lost her job as the advertising spokeswoman for the Florida Citrus Commission after gay people organised a boycott of orange juice (many bars removed screwdrivers from their menu and replaced it with the ‘Anita Bryant’, which was vodka and apple juice). She also got divorced, which harmed her standing with some fundamentalist Christians, who’d previously been her biggest supporters but many of whom don’t believe in divorce.

By the 1990s attempts to revitalise her career – including opening a venue where she sang and preached about her Christian beliefs – failed and she went bankrupt. Since then, while she’s been less publicly visible, she’s still been active, including heading up her own ministry.

The film’s screenplay comes from Chad Hodge, a gay man who managed to get Bryant to agree to meet with him, despite the fact she’s generally tried to shun the controversies of her past (she hasn’t changed her mind, she just wants to be known for other things). They apparently got on well and he forced her to confront her past. It’s believed the movie will cover both her anti-gay campaigning and this later meeting.

There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Sarah Jessica Parker Replacing Demi Moore In Lovelace

January 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Demi Moore in rehab (officially due to exhaustion and unofficially due to substance issues that led to a recently released 911 call when she fell into a semi-conscious state), she’s not going to be able to take part in Lovelace, which is currently filming.

Moore was due to play well known feminist and activist Gloria Steinem, and now Variety reports she’ll be replaced by Sarah Jessica Parker, in what is believed to be essentially a cameo. Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl, The Celluloid Closet) will direct, telling the story of porn actress Linda Lovelace, star of the infamous Deep Throat, who later became a noted anti-porn advocate.

Amanda Seyfried will play the title role, with Peter Sarsgaard portraying Lovelace’s husband, Chuck Traynor. Parker joins recently announced cast members Chloe Sevigny, Debi Mazar, Cory Hardrict, Adam Brody, Eric Roberts, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Wes Bentley, Sharon Stone and Juno Temple.

Chloe Sevigny Added To Lovelace

January 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lovelace started shooting recently, but it appears it hasn’t quite finished casting, as Variety reports Chloë Sevigny has signed up to join the cast. She’s set to play Rebecca, a feminist journalist on freelance assignment for a men’s magazine, who sets out to find out who the real Linda Lovelace is.

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl, The Celluloid Closet) are directing from an original screenplay by Andy Bellin (Trust). From the birth of the sexual revolution to the height of the feminist movement, Lovelace depicts the life of Linda Boreman who as ‘Linda Lovelace’ became the first erotic superstar in the 1970s. However Linda later renounced porn and claimed her time in the industry was virtual slavery due to her domineering husband.

Amanda Seyfried is playing the title role, with Peter Sarsgaard as her husband, Chuck Traynor. Sevigny joins a cast including Debi Mazar, Cory Hardrict, Adam Brody, Eric Roberts, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Wes Bentley, Sharon Stone and Juno Temple.

James Franco In Talks For Lovelace Cameo

December 21, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Earlier this year it was reported that James Franco was in talks to play the male lead of Chuck Traynor in the Linda Lovelace biopic, Lovelace. However a deal never came together and the part went to Peter Sarsgard instead. However Franco may still pop up and he’s now in talks for a cameo role as Hugh Hefner, reuniting him with the directors of Howl, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.

Amanda Seyfried is playing the title role of porn actress Linda Lovelace, star of the infamous Deep Throat, who later became a noted anti-porn advocate. James Franco’s involvement will be limited, with only one scene where Hugh Hefner invites Lovelace and Traynor to the Playboy mansion for a screening of Deep Throat

Variety also reports that Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth and Robert Patrick have joined the film. Hank Azaria will play Deep Throat director Jerry Damiano, Bobby Cannavale and Chris Noth will be Deep Throat financiers Butchie Peraino and Anthony Romano, and Robert Patrick will portray Linda’s father, John. They join recently announced cast members Wes Bentley, Sharon Stone and Juno Temple.

Shooting has just begun.

The Celluloid Closet (DVD)

November 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Tony Curtis
Director: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 4th, 2009

It’s a bit of a surprise that it’s taken so long for The Celluloid Closet to make it to DVD. The 1995 documentary, which looks at the history of gays and lesbians in film, won numerous awards and was a major success on its release, and yet it’s only just appearing on DVD now. Based on the book by Vito Russo, which was the seminal work on the subject, it’s a fascinating trawl through a topic that has always been present in cinema, but for most of its history was hidden away and never openly mentioned.

Starting right at the earliest days of moving images, The Celluloid Closet charts the different ways cinema has tried to deal with homosexuality, from Marlene Dietrich dressing in a tux and kissing a woman in 1930’s Morocco, to how The Hay’s Code insisted that any suggestion of homosexuality was stripped out of film adaptations of Tennessee Williams. Amanda Seyfried Up For Lovelace

November 2, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For a couple of years now there have been two rival movies about hardcore porn actress turned anti-smut activist Linda Lovelace in the works, but neither have actually got to the point where they’ve been ready to go in front of the cameras.

Actresses such as Olivia Wilde, Malin Akerman, Kate Hudson and Lindsay Lohan have flirted with playing the porn star (Lohan was essentially fired as they couldn’t get insurance for her), but now Amanda Seyfried has entered talks to play the role in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s (Howl) take on Lovelace’s life.

Variety also reports that Peter Sarsgaard is also in talks to join the film, playing Chuck Traynor, Linda Lovelace’s husband and porn director. Linda Lovelace is a fascinating figure far beyond the titilation of being the star of one of the best known porn films in history – Deep Throat. Initially appearing in hardcore (and even bestiality) movies, at first Lovelace seemed to revel in her status. However during her divorce from Chuck Traynor in the late 70s, she claimed that he was violent and had forced her into pornography at gunpoint (with some evidence to back her up).

She said that her marriage was plagued with beatings and rape, and that when she appeared in porn, it was basically enforced prostitution. While there have been some disagreements as to the extent Lovelace was a willing participant in her porn career (her assertions that everything was coerced have been questioned by many who were there at the time), there seems little doubt that her marriage to Traynor was viscious and cruel.

She then became an anti-pornography champion, speaking at public events and testifying at government hearings on pornography. However she later said she felt used by the anti-pornography movement, which got a lot mileage out of having Lovelace as a convert, but which never helped her out. She died in a car accident in 2002.

Epstein and Friedman (Howl) will direct from a screenplay by Merritt Johnson and Andy Bellin, which is adapted from Eric Danville’s book, The Complete Linda Lovelace. Production is finally scheduled to begin in January, around the same time as the rival movie – Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story – will start filming, with Malin Akerman in the lead role.
