In The Name Of Trailer – Take a look at the Berlin Teddy Best Queer Film winner

May 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year during the Berlin Film Festival, the Teddy Awards ran, which brings together some of the best LGBT films from around the world, handing out its gongs to the Best Feature Film and Best Documentary.

This year’s Best Queer Feature winner was In The Name Of (aka W Imie…), which joined the ranks of previous winners including Ira Sachs’ excellent Keep The Lights On, Marco Berger’s Absent, Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch.

Now a trailer has been released, so we can all get a taste of the film.

Malgorzata Szumowska’s Polish movie is about Adam, a Catholic priest who lives in a village in rural Poland where he works with teenagers with behavioural problems who fight and yell abuse. After turning down a woman’s advances, it turns out that celibacy is not the only reason for his rejection. Adam knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he eventually meets Lukasz, the strange and taciturn son of a simple rural family, Adam’s self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden.

Peccadillo Pictures will release the film In the UK later in the year (it’s currently set for November). No US release is currently set. [Read more…]

Gay Porn Star Johnny Hazzard Going Legit With Indie Movie Where We Belong

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

While Hollywood lore says many of those who end up in porn originally wanted to be legit actors, until recently it’s been virtually impossible to go from porn to proper films (with occasional exceptions such as Traci Lords). However straight porn actor James Deen recently made The Canyons with Lindsay Lohan, while gay hardcore star Brent Corrigan has appeared in legit LGBT-themed films such as Judas Kiss and The Big Gay Musical.

Now another gay porn actor is branching out – Johnny Hazzard. Under his real name, Frankie Valenti, he’s starring in the upcoming LGBT themed movie, Where We Belong. The film, from director Wade Gasque, is now looking for at least $15,000 funding on Kickstarter, with the hope of raising $30,000 or above to get the movie completely finished.

Roughly half of the movie has been shot, with the plan being to complete filming in June, once they’ve got some more cash.

So what’s it about? Well, the Kickstarter tells us, ‘Where We Belong is an intimate drama that explores the unique dynamic between two wildly different gay brothers. Younger brother Todd (Frankie Valenti) ran away at eighteen and never looked back while older brother Chet (Mark Strano) quietly assumed the burden of prodigal son. They are never able to really connect with one another until Dad dies. It speaks volumes about the tremendous force he had (and still has) over them and the internalized shame they both carry as a result. With our pride parades and general acceptance by the mainstream, why is telling Dad still so hard?’

The clip.trailer above suggests the film could be pretty interesting, so if you’re interested in helping out, head over to Kickstarter. It’s also proof that not all porn stars are terrible actors. [Read more…]

Zachary Quinto To Make Broadway Debut In Tennessee Williams Revival

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Zachary QuintoZachary Quinto is busy travelling the world at the moment promoting Star Trek Into Darkness, but he’s booked a great job for when that finishes – making his Broadway debut in a revival of the Tennessee Williams classic, The Glass Menagerie.

Quinto will play Tom Wingfield, the narrator and protagonist of the play, who works hard to support his mother and sister. His mom, Amanda, is a faded southern belle, obsessed with her youth and in finding a suitable match for her daughter, Laura. However Laura is a quiet and timid woman who prefers looking after her collection of glass animals rather than the company of others. Things come to a head when Tom brings home a friend from work, who Amanda assumes is a potential suitor for her daughter.

The character of Tom is often considered a stand-in for tortured gay playwright Williams.

Quinto previously starred in an off-Broadway production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America in 2010, but this will be his first proper Broadway production. The play is due to open on September 5th, although the theatre it’ll be staged in has yet to be announced.

TWO: The Story of Roman & Nyro – LGBT-themed documentary trailer

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TWO: The Story Of Roman and Nyro documents the 12-year journey of legendary songwriter Desmond Child (Livin’ On A Prayer, Livin’ La Vida Loca, Just Like Jesse James) and his lifelong partner Curtis Shaw, and the extraordinary way they met and connected with Angela Whittaker, the woman who would carry their twin sons, Roman and Nyro, into the world.

From preconception through the boys’ first 10 years, TWO is the personal and powerful story of these unique individuals whose lives become inextricably woven together in magical and unexpected ways. TWO is testament to the universal power and ultimate triumph of love — that it is love that makes a family, affirming modern families may be modern in their making, but timelessly human at their core.

TWO is premiering at the Nashville Film Festival on April 18th and making its World Premiere today (April 20th) at the Miami LGBT Film Festival. [Read more…]

Behind the Candelabra – Invitation To The Set Behind-The Scenes Video

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In less than a month, HBO will debut Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra, before it gets released in cinemas outside the US (it reaches the UK on June 7th). Now HBO has released a short new promo, giving us a look behind-the-scenes on the movie, which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his younger lover, Scott Thorson.

The film details their relationship, which saw Liberace publicly saying he was straight, while having his toyboy at home. Things went sour when they broke up and Scott sued the glamorous pianist for alimony.

The promo sees screenwriter Richard Lagavenese talking about the movie and what we can expect from the film.

Steven Soderbergh has also recent been addreesing how true the film is to Out.com, telling them that Scott and Liberace tell “completely different stories” about Scott’s plastic surgery. “So somebody is not telling the truth,” Soderbergh said, who has seen the depositions in their court case. “We went with Scott’s version because I love the image of Lee bringing the painting over and saying, ‘I want him to look like this.'”

This Friday, HBO will air The Making of Behind the Candelabra, giving people a closer look at the production, so take a look if you’re interested.

Playwright & AIDS Activist Larry Kramer To Receive Special Tony Award

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

larry-kramerTo some Larry Kramer is best known as a playwright who created the likes of The Normal Heart about the early days of the AIDS crisis, to others he’s the author of the controversial novel Faggots, while to many he’s best know for his AIDS activism, helping set up organisations such as the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP.

Now the Tony Awards has decided to honour 77-year-old Karmer, offering him the Isabelle Stevenson Award as part of the 2013 ceremony, which takes place on June 9th. The gong, named after a former president of the American Theater Wing, recognises a theatre practitioner who’s made significant contributions to humanitarian or charitable causes.

Kramer was at the forefront of the AIDS battle in the 1980s – few histories of that time fail to mention him – fighting to ensure the US government approved drugs that could help, in the face of bureaucratic apathy and a President who simply didn’t seem to care. Since then he had taken up other gay rights battles and never shied away from a fight he though was worth taking one.

A restaging of The Normal Heart in 2011 won three Tony Awards, including Best Revival, and is now being made into a movie by Glee creator Ryan Murphy, with the likes of Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer, Mark Ruffalo and Jim Parsons set to star.

LGBT Bridegroom Documentary Wins Tribeca Audience Award & Presidential Praise

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bridegroom-posterLast year the short video ‘It Could Happen To You‘ went massively viral. It told the story of Shane Bitney Crone and his boyfriend Tom, and how when Tom tragically died, Shane found himself completely frozen out by his boyfriend’s homophobic family, with no recourse as his rights were not recognised.

That quickly led to the idea of a feature-length documentary, which became Kickstarter’s highest ever funded project (at the time). The completed project has now premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it even got support from Bill Clinton, who introduced the film. He said, “This is really on one level a wonderful, sad, heartbreaking, yet exhilarating and life-affirming story, and on another level, it’s a story about our nation’s struggle to make one more step in forming a more perfect union, for which marriage is both the symbol and the substance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.”

There was more good news for the movie, as it picked up the Tribeca Heineken Audience Award, which comes with an award of $25,000.

Director Linda Bloodworth Thomason commented, “We are shocked. We were so grateful to just be selected for the Festival; we never imagined we would win the audience award, Hopefully the power of this story will propel the film into theaters across America and beyond.”

You can watch the trailer for the documentary below, and hopeful we’ll all be able to see it soon. (Source: The Advocate)

Transgender Actor Finally Cast In Transgender Role, In Film That’s Now Seeking Funding

April 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve become used to the fact that if a film or TV series has a transgender role, the person cast will be gender conforming (i.e. identifies with the sex assigned to them at birth). One of the more high profile cases recently was the TV series Hit & Miss, which launched a large search for a transgender actress, but then cast Chloe Sevigny as a woman born with male genitalia.

However now it’s finally happened – a film has cast a transgender actor in a transgender role! The film is question is the rom-com Boy Meets Girl, which now has transgender actress Michelle Hendley as its lead after a US wide hunt (Hendley was discovered thanks to a Skype audition). The movie is currently seeking funding via Indiegogo, where it’s hoping to raise $95,000 to make it a reality.

Here’s the plot description: ‘Boy Meets Girl is a tender, human, sex-positive romantic comedy that explores what it means to be “real”: to live and love authentically to the truth of one’s heart, regardless of the sex or small town you’re born into. Our story focuses on Ricky, a beautiful twenty-one year old transgendered girl living in Virginia with dreams of becoming a fashion designer in New York.’

Eric Schaeffer will direct, who’s previously made the likes of If Lucy Fell, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Stiller and Elle Macpherson.

The director commented to Queerty, “I’m passionate about breaking the mold of sexual and emotional convention in the pursuit of creating more unity in our increasingly fractured world. Being a ‘straight man,’ albeit one who admits to many things most straight men don’t, and living my life with a colorful spectrum of sexual and emotional tastes, desires and behaviors that don’t always seem to be accepted, I feel a duty to portray characters in my films who, like myself, admit to and accept without condition the parts of themselves and others that can be best described and must start being labeled as one thing and one thing only: human.  That is why I make any film.  That is why I am inspired to make this one.”

Jonathan Groff Joins Ryan Murphy’s AIDS Drama, The Normal Heart

April 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonathan-GroffUntil recently it seemed that only straight actors would play gay in high profile projects (that’s if anyone would play gay at all), in fear of getting typecast, but for The Normal Heart, Ryan Murphy has managed to put together a strong mix of straight and gay actors to take on Larry Kramer’s play about the early days of the AIDS crisis.

On the gay side the HBO film already has Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons, with straight actors such as Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch and Mark Ruffalo also signing up. Now the gays can add one more, as Glee and Broadway star (and Zachary Quinto’s boyfriend) Jonathan Groff has joined the cast, according to EW.

Groff will play an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend will be Taylor Kitsch, a character who starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Ruffalo is taking on the lead role of Ned Weeks, one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play. Julia Roberts will play Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matthew Bomer is set for Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover.

HBO is backing the movie, which should shoot later this year for release in 2014. Indeed Groff will be hoping to spend a lot of time on HBO next year, as he’s also shot a pilot for a show about a group of gay friends in San Francisco. As yet it hasn’t been picked up to become a series, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
