Bret Easton Ellis Says Matt Bomer Is ‘Too Gay’ For Fifty Shades Of Grey Film

August 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

For the last few weeks American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis has been trying to pimp himself out to write the script for a planned movie based on Fifty Shades Of Grey. A couple of days ago, it was revealed he was off the shortlist of possible writers, and so as is Ellis’ penchant he took to Twitter.

However he wasn’t content with just saying he was sad he was no longer in contention for scripting duties, but also decided to tell the world he feels that, ‘Okay. Let’s finalize this. Matt Bomer is totally hot and a very good actor. He is NOT right for [Fifty Shades’] Christian Grey and it [his being gay] complicates the role’. He then added, ‘I don’t care how good an actor you are but being married to another man complicates things for playing CG.’

This has sparked off lots of accusation of Ellis being a self-loathing homophobe, although what Ellis is talking about it is actually more complex than knee-jerk reactions would suggest. What he’s discussing (although often muddily and badly phrased) is whether audiences – and even more than that, risk averse producers – are prepared to accept a gay man in as sexually frank a straight role as Christian Grey.

While people inevitably get bashed on the head for talking about things in the terms Ellis has, it is something that’s more of an issue than we’d perhaps like to think. Yes, in an ideal world, it shouldn’t matter and it is acting – Tom Cruise isn’t really an all-action secret-agent, but audiences are fine pretending he is. However there is actually a genuine question here over whether audiences will accept a gay actor in a very straight role, with part of the problem being that it’s never really been tested in a mainstream film.

I also know personally that some of my friends do find it tough to view actors as anything other than gay, once they know their sexuality, no matter what the role is (one even had the same reaction to Bomer in Magic Mike as Ellis is suggesting, as she felt that despite him playing a straight stripper, ‘He’s so gay’). There is undoubtedly a level of homophobia working there, but the fact is it exists and quite widespread. While it shouldn’t matter, when Hollywood looks at the bottom line, they’re undoubtedly going to go with the safer, straighter choice. It’s not right, but sadly that’s the way it is, and it’s as much a reflection of the truth about how society views gay people as it is about the way Hollywood works.

Reese Witherspoon Is Gonna Be A Gay Man’s Beard

August 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Reese Witherspoon is planning on dating a gay person, at least on screen (and in many a gay man’s desperate wishes, that’s what she was doing with Jake Gyllenhaal too), as she’s signed on for a romantic comedy called The Beard, according to THR.

The title refers to someone who acts as a date for a gay person so that they appear to be straight. There’s not much more info about the movie than that, but we’d be willing to bet the plot will see Reese getting into all manner of confusion when she agrees to publicly be a gay guy’s date, but then meets the man of her dreams.

Witherspoon is currently shooting Devil’s Knot, Atom Egoyan’s take on the West Memphis Three murder case. She will also produce The Beard, although there’s no info on when it might shoot.

Documentary Coming About Legendary Continental Gay Bathhouse

August 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nowadays, gay bathhouses have a reputation that’s solely about sex, but back in the past, when there were still few places to gay people to meet up, some of them offered a lot more than dark rooms and glory holes (although they did offer that too). Perhaps the most famous is New York’s Continental Baths, which will be getting a feature-length documentary made about it, and is currently looking for funding through Kickstarter to get it through post-production. There are just a few days to go to reach is $12,000 target.

So why is the Continental worth making a doc about? Well, here’s what the Kickstarter page has to say, ‘The Continental Baths was a seminal gay New York City hotspot that existed from the late sixties to 1974. The baths themselves were a lavish Roman style affair, which were opened in the late 60’s in a newly post-stonewall NYC. Owner Steve Ostrow wanted to create a decadent and luxurious clubhouse where newly liberated men could explore with wanton abandon…

‘Along with the baths, The Continental was home to glamorous shows that attracted first class performers such as Cab Calloway, Peter Allen, Wayland Flowers, Patti Labelle and a then unknown Bette Midler, who (with her piano player Barry Manilow) became ringmaster to the revelry.

‘Continental is a stylish examination of a lively and lascivious piece of real estate that transcended sexual identity and acted as a beacon to the hip, beautiful and infamous. Housed at the former site of the legendary Ansonia Hotel at 230 W. 74th St., the Continental ultimately became one of the most important metropolitan keystones for a sexual revolution, fostering an environment of tolerance and indirectly contributing to a level of mainstream gay acceptance the likes of which has never been seen again.

‘Told through archival footage, photographs, music and the voices of owner Steve Ostrow as well as patrons, performers and opponents,Continental will be a thorough examination of a time and a place not so long ago when the word positive wasn’t so negative.’

Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar, Bear Nation) will direct. If you fancy helping out, watch the film from Ingram above and then head over to Kickstarter.

James Duke Mason & Matthew Mishory Plan An LGBT-Themed Thriller

August 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Duke Mason (son of Belinda Carlisle) is an actor who to be honest hasn’t really had that many roles, but he’s became well known for being incredibly active for LGBT causes and being one of the few very young actors (he’s just 20) prepared to stand up, say they’re gay and actually use that for a bit of activism (it doesn’t hurt either that he’s quite the hottie). Now he’s teamed up with director Matthew Mishory, whose LGBT-themed film Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean is currently doing the festival rounds (you can watch the trailer here), to put together a political thriller called Disappear Here.

They’re currently looking for funding and have set up a Kickstarter campaign hoping to raise $25,000. The film is described as, ‘Disappear Here is set in the parallel shadow worlds of Hollywood and high-stake national politics, where emotions and loyalty are mere commodities, and where privacy is an outmoded 20th century notion. This moody, stylish thriller asks who sets the price of a lie worth telling — and who pays? Though staged in the present day, the film will echo classical Hollywood film noir of the 1940s, the color palettes of early 80s album covers, and the music from those albums. Disappear Here weaves a tale of blackmail, sexuality, and personal courage. Part murder mystery, part meditation, it is a moral tale for our time.’

There’s a great team behind this one, including Sex Lies & Videotape producer Matthew Mason (who’s also James’ dad), and it’s well worth taking a closer look at to see whether you want to support it over at Kickstarter. You can also find out a bit more by watching the video above.

Is Brad Pitt Looking For A Gay Role To Spite His Mum?

August 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago, Jane Pitt, mother of Brad, was revealed to be against gay marriage in a letter she wrote to her local newspaper, saying people should vote for Mitt Romney even though he’s a Mormon, because, among other things, Barack Obama is for equal marriage.

It was reported soon afterwards that Angelina Jolie was furious, as she and Brad are well known gay rights advocates. Now the National Enquirer (so feel free to take this with a pinch of salt), says Brad is actively looking for a gay role in the hope of showing his mum she’s wrong, or indeed just distancing himself further from her opinions.

The Enquirer reports Pitt’s mother’s ‘gay-bashing fast-tracked the deal’. A source says, ‘It turns out Brad’s actually wanted to play a gay man for years, feeling it would add dimension to his work as an actor.’

After Jane’s letter was release, the magazine says Brad told producers, ‘I’ll do whatever it takes to make this film happen.’ The fact the article seems undecided if Pitt is putting together a particular project or just looking for one, does make the entire thing seem dubious, although don’t be shocked if Brad does find a gay role, as it’s difficult to believe he’d be against it. Indeed, he’s already got very homoerotic in Interview With The Vampire and, arguably, Fight Club, and he recently played the judge in a staged reading of Dustin Lance Black’s play 8, about the legal battle over Prop 8 in California, which would ban gay marriage in the state.

Author, Screenwriter & Gay Rights Advocate Gore Vidal Dies Aged 86

August 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gore Vidal was many things. Often pompous and dismissive of others, he was nevertheless a somewhat revered writer, essayist, thinker, politician, screenwriter and one of the earliest advocates of gay rights, writing positively about same-sex relationships as early as 1948. Vidal has now died at his home in Los Angeles at about 7.45pm on Tuesday 31st July local time, due to complications from pneumonia. He was 86 years old.

Gore broke new ground in 1948 with his novel The City and the Pillar, which was among the first books to feature openly gay characters and caused outrage at the time. Many bookshops refused to have anything to do with it and Vidal had to write under a pseudonym for several years because of the controversy. The book was dedicated to JT, who Vidal later revealed was James ‘Jimmy’ Trimble III. He was killed in the Battle of Iwo Jima, and described by Vidal as the only person he had ever loved.

He refused to define his own sexuality, although said he’d had over 1,000 sexual encounters with both men and women. He once said, ‘Homosexuality is as natural as heterosexuality. Notice I use the word ‘natural,’ not ‘normal’.’

His screenwriting work covered both film and TV, including adapting Tennessee Williams’ controversial Suddenly Last Summer in 1959 (which had to have all reference to homosexuality removed), work on Ben-Hur (he claims to have wanted Stephen Boyd’s character to be in love Charlton Heston’s, with Heston not knowing that) and Spartacus (including the infamous ‘snails and oysters’ scene between Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis). He also wrote the porn-meets-art movie Caligula, although he disowned the film after changes were made.

He was certainly a fascinating character, who never failed to support both gay and straight relationships. Indeed, he was a fan of sex in general, once saying, ‘I never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television.’

First On-Set Pic Of Damon & Douglas In Liberace Biopic, Behind The Candelabra

August 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For the last couple of years, director Steven Soderbergh has been slowly putting together a biopic of closeted gay entertainer Liberace, called Behind The Candelabra. Now the cameras are rolling, with Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his younger lover, Scott Thorson.

The first image of the two actors on set has been snapped, via E!, which sees Douglas and Damon really rocking the 1970s look for the HBO movie.

While Liberace went to his grave never publicly saying he was gay, after his relationship with Thorson broke up, the younger man – who had plenty of troubles of his own, including drug addiction – sued the entertainer for palimony. They settled out of court shortly before Liberace died of AIDS in 1987. The film about the two of them should arrive sometime in 2013. It’s due for an initial TV airing in the States, but may get a cinematic release over here.

Trans Matrix Director Lana Wachowski Makes A Rare Appearance In Cloud Atlas Video

July 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before the release of 2008’s Speed Racer, it was revealed that Lana Wachowski, who had directed the likes of The Matrix movies as Larry, was in the process of transitioning from male to female.

Lana completed her transition at some point after the release of Speed Racer, and then set to work, still alongside Andy, on several ambitious projects. One of her planned films, described as a ‘gay Iraq war love story’, couldn’t find funding, but they’ve now shot Cloud Atlas, with Run Lola Run’s Tom Twyker joining them for the multi-story film, which stars the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw and Hugh Grant.

Now Lana has made her first official appearance since her transition (she and Andy never have made many public appearances, so it’s unsurprising it’s taken a while until we’ve seen her) in a video in which she, Andy and Tom joke around and explain the creative process that went into making Cloud Atlas. You can watch that video above, and we’ve also embedded the epic and fascinating trailer they’re talking about below.

Help Gay-Themed Film Best Summer Ever Get Funded

July 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’re a bit of a fan of crowd-sourcing at BGPS, as it’s allowing a lot of very interesting gay-themed movies get made, which would have great difficulty getting funded through normal sources. One good-looking project is Best Summer Ever, but there’s only a few days until its Kickstarter effort ends, and it’s only a third of the way to its target, so now’s your chance to help.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘BEST SUMMER EVER is an adaptation of the popular teen novel TALE OF TWO SUMMERS (Simon & Schuster). It is about two teen best friends who spend their first summer apart from each other and, to keep in touch, send videos back and forth. Chuck (the straight one) is going away to a summer theatre camp while his bestie Hal (the gay one) is staying at home and learning how to drive. It ends up being an unusually exciting summer when they both fall in love for the first time.

‘What makes this film unique is that it explores the intense, dynamic friendship between a gay teen and a straight one, something rarely depicted onscreen. Chuck and Hal have known each other for 10 years and, now as they both get involved in their first relationships, the question is whether their friendship will survive the changes that brings. And, as both of these characters fall in love (Chuck with his leading lady and Hal with a hot French teen), they’ll be recording it all with intimate and personal videos, providing an intense glimpse into the exciting ups and downs of first love.’

Director/writer Brian Sloane plans to get the actors to record the video diaries etc. that make up the movie on iPhones, which is an interesting idea and should keep down the costs, but he still needs $25,000 to get the project up and running. If you fancy finding out more and helping out, head over to the movie’s Kickstarter page.

The film is a psychological thriller centered on the life of an illegal Russian boy who after losing his family, is pushed into becoming a gay escort – ultimately trying to come to terms with who he thinks he is. You can find out more at movie’s Facebook page. The film should be released in 2013.
