New Zealand’s First Lesbian Web Series, Pot Luck, Needs Your Help For Season 2

June 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This time last year, most of the first season of New Zealand’s very first Lesbian web series. Now it’s hoping to come back for Season 2, but needs your help to do so. The makers have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Boosted, in the hope of raising $(NZ)16,500.

The series already has some funding NZ On Air’s Digital Fund. This has been bolstered by contributions from Wellington City Council’s Arts and Culture Fund and key sponsor Hell Pizza. But it needs the help of fans to top that up, with the hope of shooting starting in August.

Set in Wellington, New Zealand, Pot Luck Season 1 introduced the world to the lives of Mel, (Nikki Si’ulepa), Debs (Anji Kreft) and Beth, (Tess Jamieson-Karaha), three lesbian characters in their 30s and 40s. The universal themes of friendship, family and finding love have been positively received by a broad audience both in New Zealand and overseas, with the majority of viewers based in the United States.

Ness Simons, the writer and director, is looking forward to sharing the next stage of Mel, Debs and Beth’s friendship and romantic lives in season two, which picks up a few months after Season 1 finishes. She says, “The past few years have seen some great steps in terms of queer characters on screen but portrayals are still limited, and while there’s increasing mainstream acceptance of lesbians in shows such as Wentworth and Orange is the New Black, these characters are in jail and don’t really represent the everyday lesbian experience.”

Season 1 has had over two million views online, and has screened at festivals including UKWebFest, DubWebFest (Dublin), NZWebFest, LA based OutWebFest, Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Web Series Festival Global. It was a finalist in the LGBT categories at DubWebFest and the NZWebFest. Pot Luck recently swept the pool in the Rome Web Awards, winning 10 Merit awards in the LGBT category, which has led to 9 nominations in their Excellence Awards, to be announced very soon.

Take a look at the crowdfunding video below, and if you like what you see, head over to Boosted to help out. You can also catch up with Season 1 here. [Read more…]

Dusk Trailer – Duncan James stars in the second part of Jake Graf’s trans short film trilogy

June 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last year, trans director (and sometime actor) Jake Graf got huge amounts of praise for his wonderful short film, Dawn, which saw a blind man and a trans woman meeting while waiting for a bus. Dawn was the first part of a trilogy, which continues with Dusk, which has a rather dramatic trailer.

The film premieres tonight at the East End Film Festival in London as part of the New Queer Visions strand at the Rio, Dalston.

The short film is told through flashbacks over several decades of the protagonist ‘Chris” lifetime, exploring how the choices we make can change our lives fundamentally. The cast includes Duncan James, (Chicago, Legally Blonde, Hollyoaks), Victoria Emslie, (The Danish Girl, Downton Abbey, The Theory Of Everything), and US model and actor Elliott Sailors (Spectrum), and crew including award winning cinematographer Lorenzo Levrini and award winning composer Justine Barker.

Take a look at the trailer below. You can find out more about other East End Film Festival New Queer Visions screenings here. [Read more…]

A Gay Golden Girls, Called Silver Foxes, May Be Coming To A TV Near You Soon

June 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a very long time, The Golden Girls has been beloved by many gay people, who love the sassiness of four older ladies and their chosen family. Indeed, many have said it’s a show that could be about a bunch of gay men without chaging the scripts all that much.

Now there’s a TV series in the works that’s essentially a gay version of Golden Girls, but with four older gents replacing Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia. The guys behind it, Stan Zimmerman and James Berg, even wrote episodes of the classic 1980s sitcom, as well as the likes of Roseanne and Gilmore Girls.

They’ve written the pilot for the show, currently titled Silver Foxes, and they recently had a table read to test out the material, where they enlisted the help of such luminaries as George Takei, Leslie Jordan, and Bruce Vilanch.

Interestingly, while talking about the show to Party Foul Radio with Pollo & Pearl, they said that rather than being directly inspired by Golden Girls, they got the idea after watching the PBS documentary, Before You Know It. That film follows the difficulties many LGBT people face as they get older.

However, even they acknowledge the Golden Girls parallels, saying, “Every one of us is getting older. Especially with gays and lesbians and transgender, we create our own families – and that’s what The Golden Girls did. Those women came together and supported each other.”

Zimmerman and Berg are currently pitching the show to various outlets, including traditional TV channels and online streaming services. As yet, it’s now known if any of them will pick up the series. We hope they will. [Read more…]

Molly Shannon’s Recent LGBT-Themed Roles Were Inspired By Her Gay Dad

June 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The last couple of movies Molly Shannon has starred in have seen her playing the mother of a gay man. That was her character in both Other People and Miles, the latter of which was just released in US cinemas. It turns out this wasn’t purely a coincidence (or because they were the only gigs she could get). It was partially because her father gay, although she didn’t know this until towards the end of his life.

As reported by The Advocate, at a post-screening Q&A in Los Angeles last week, she said, “My dad was gay and closeted – born in 1926, where it wasn’t an option. Married.”

Shannon was unaware of her father’s hidden sexuality growing up, although now she sees that there were certain aspects of his personality that might have been a clue. “When I went to NYU drama school, I would send him pictures of like a head shot of Judy Garland,” she said. I didn’t associate that he might be gay; I just thought, ‘He’ll love this! And then when I got my first color head shots, my dad framed it and threw gold stars all over it.”

It wasn’t until later in life that he revealed his sexuality. Molly recalls, “He was 72 when he told me. He told me he was gay right before he died.We were sitting at the pool at the Four Seasons, and I said, ‘Have you ever thought you might be gay?’ He said, ‘Most definitely.’ And then we drove to Ohio and talked about it for the next 72 hours.”

As for her recent choice of movies, she adds, “All stories about people being gay and coming out, I’m just so attracted to. It was my whole childhood. My whole life. I was the child of somebody who had to keep that secret. So anything I can do to let that out and tell all those stories is the most important thing to me.”

In Miles, longtime LGBT advocate Shannon plays Pam, whose gay son (the titular Miles) can’t wait to leave high school so he can leave the small town he grew up in and go to college in Chicago. However, when Pam’s husband dies she discovers he spent all their cash – including Miles’ university funds – on his mistress. That sets Miles off on a mission to find some other way of getting out of his hometown, while his mother starts to explore life out from under the thumb of her husband. June 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Popping your cherry is a special moment in anyone’s life, but not everyone has a first time as a drag queen. However, that’s what one man is doing in Cherry Pop, which gives the regular queens – including one played by Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen – a chance to size him up, while he wonders what he’s doing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A bawdy, uproarious comedy about a newcomer’s wild night in a down-and-out drag club. Cherry Pop follows one wild, crazy night at a drag club, where the matriarch of the show Zaza refuses to come out of her dressing room, while a young newcomer, The Cherry, is tormented by the regular troupe of back-stabbing queens.’

The film stars Caldwell Tidicue (aka Bob The Drag Queen), Tempest DuJour, Detox Icunt, Mayhem Miller, Misty Violet, Allusia Alusia, Miguel Sagaz, Lars Berge and Latrice Royale.

In the US, Cherry Pop will premiere around the country this summer in a series of special screenings; starting in New York on June 19 as part of NYC Pride, followed by a special screening event on July 11 in San Francisco. Los Angeles and additional screenings to be announced. You can find out more over on the film’s website. [Read more…]

Center Of My World Trailer – Things get sexy & dark between two young men in the gay-themed film

June 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last few weeks, it seems Tumblr has been full of gifs from Center Of My World, as while it may focus on two teen boys who are still in school, it isn’t shy of a little full-frontal nudity. We really enjoyed the film when we caught it at the BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival earlier this year – and you can read our review here.

In the movie, after a summer away Phil arrives back hom to discover his free-spirited mother and his twin sister aren’t speaking, but they won’t tell him why. Once back in school, ne is immediately enamoured with new boy Nicholas, and is surprised when his crush seems to feel the same way. As a passionate – and pretty sexy – love affair develops, Phil learns more about the secrets that have split his sister and mother apart.

TLA Releasing will be bringing out the film in the US later this year, while Matchbox Releasing has set a UK cinema release of September 25th, 2017. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Anything Clip – First look at the controversial film starring Matt Bomer as a transgender sex worker

June 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it first became widely known that Matt Bomer was playing a trangender sex worker in the upcoming movie Anything, there was an immediate controversy. Many were angry that yet again a cisgender person was playing a transgender role, and there was also frustration that yet again that trans person was going to be involved in sex work.

The film is now preparing for its premiere this weekend in the LA Muse section of the Los Angeles Film Festival. Ahead of that the first clip from the movie has arrived, debuting over at Deadline.

The film is about, ‘Early Landry (John Carroll Lynch), who after losing his wife is forced to move to Los Angeles so he can be cared for by his over-protective sister (Maura Tierney), but escapes her clutches to start a new life in Hollywood. He quickly becomes enamored by his neighbor, Freda (Matt Bomer). His loneliness and need for companionship opens his heart to a remarkable new relationship, but their growing affection must be reconciled with the complexity of their disparate backgrounds.’

Marc Ruffalo, who executive produced the film, has defended Bomer’s casting, although its yet to be seen whether a wider audience will be prepared to look past the issues that have been highlighted. It’ll be interesting to see the first reviews following its premiere on Saturday at 3 PM at the Arclight Cinema in Santa Monica. Take a look at the first clip below. [Read more…]

Colton Haynes Reveals He Lost Hs Virginity At Age 13 – To Both A Boy & A Girl!

June 13, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Since coming out as gay, Colton Haynes certainly isn’t holding back. The engaged former Arrow star has now dropped another interesting nugget in  a radio interview, revealing that he’s not a ‘gold star gay’ as he popped his cherry at the age of 13, to both a boy and a girl.

Talking to Andy Cohen Live, he said, “I lost my virginity at 13 to a girl and a guy.  I’ve never said that before. The girl was two years older than me, and the guy was, I would say, around 16… Everyone participated. It was a real first time. It was exciting.”

While that makes it sound he decided to start out big with a full-on threesome, he then clarified that the boy and the girl were on two different occasions. She wasn’t the only woman he’s slept with, as he revealed that there are a total of four female notches on his bedpost, and that during high school he dated both men and women, as while he first came out at 14, he went back in the closet when he changed schools and dated several women.

Haynes also talked about the issues he had when he first arrived in Hollywood, when “I was literally told from the day that I moved to Los Angeles that I could not be gay because I wouldn’t work. My management team told me I couldn’t be this way and they tried to set me up with girls… It was horrible.”

Being forced into the closet didn’t help his anxiety issues, with the pressure to keep his sexuality secret leading to increasingly bad panic attacks and what he describes as the ‘mental break’ that caused his to leave Arrow, until he said, “Enough is Enough.”

Thankfully though, he’s keen to point out that since revealing his sexuality publicly and getting engaged, Colton says that he’s now, “Happier than I’ve ever been, and healthier than I’ve ever been.”

Take a look at part of the interview below. [Read more…]

Channel 4 Announces 50 Shades Of Gay Season, Featuring Rupert Everett, Stephen Fry & More

June 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of sex between men in England and Wales, and to mark that the UK’s Channel 4 has anounced an new season called 50 Shades Of Gay. The series of shows will be led be a documentary of the same name, in which Rupert Everett explores how life has changed for gay people in the UK in the last half a century.

So what else can we expect? Take a look at info about more of the programmes below:

Not Guilty
This film reveals how gay men continued to be persecuted long after the 1967 Act began to decriminalise homosexuality. Far from ushering in an end to prejudice, 1967 unleashed a backlash of homophobia enforced by the police and the courts, as many aspects of gay life continued to be illegal. The film tells the stories of some of the 15,000 men who fell foul of Britain’s homophobic laws during the past half century – and exposes how the injustice continues today.

Epidemic
This landmark film tells the behind-the-scenes uplifting story of how an unlikely coalition of Tory politicians, pioneering doctors and gay men came together to fight a deadly disease with no cure – and how Britain was changed forever by the battle against AIDS in the 1980s. Together they overcame a homophobic press, the ignorance of the medical establishment, and the outright hostility of Margaret Thatcher, in order to create a campaign that would change hearts and minds about AIDS – and gay men. Not only did their effort stem the tide of the AIDS plague – but by making us talk publicly about sex in a new way, they helped to create a more liberal Britain – that has lasted until today.

50 Shades of Gay
In this documentary, Rupert Everett delivers his personal and frank take on the developments in gay life in Britain since the decriminalisation of homosexuality 50 years ago. Rupert meets LGBT people of all ages and walks of life, from former royal butler Paul Burrell to the lesbian community of Hebden Bridge, and explores with them how the LGBT experience has changed on the journey towards the mainstream. Huge progress has been made – but has something of the edge and distinctiveness of gay identity also been lost?

Born This Way
After homosexuality was legalised 50 years ago, this is the story of how it was pop music that won the battle for hearts and minds, and made it OK to be gay.

While politicians and protestors focused on legal reform, another struggle was going on – the battle for hearts and minds. The fight to win mainstream status for queer culture was waged, and won, by a group of pioneers who used popular music as the stage for a revolution. Put simply: it was pop music that made it OK to be gay. Channel 4 marks this momentous anniversary with the story of the fearless & flamboyant artists– from global icons to hidden heroes – who used pop music as gay culture’s Trojan Horse, seducing us all with a soundtrack to die for.

Random Acts
Channel 4’s dedicated short arts strand Random Acts is partnering with Tate on its Queer British Art 1861-1967 exhibition, which marks the 50th anniversary since the decriminalisation of male homosexuality in the UK. The six shorts, which will be directed by contemporary LGBTQ directors, will explore queer identity and will be shown in the exhibition at Tate Britain from April to October, and on Channel 4 as part of its LGBTQ programming.

Britain’s Great Gay Buildings
In Britain’s Great Gay Buildings, presented by Stephen Fry, 7 famous gay faces champion the buildings that have helped define Britain’s gay history, revealing the groundbreaking events that happened in them and extraordinary people who lived and worked in them . The Reverend Richard Cole revisits Heaven Nightclub after many years to reveal its hedonistic past, Mary Portas visits Shibden Hall in Yorkshire to discover the secret diaries of a Yorkshire heiress, Craig Revel Horwood revels in the story of Britain’s drag scene at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Simon Callow tells the story of Oscar Wilde’s downfall at the Old Bailey, Rikki Beadle Blair visits the Theatre Royal Haymarket to discover how the British public showed their support for Sir John Gielgud after his arrest for cottaging, Liz Carr travels to Bletchley Park to visit the place that fostered one of Britain’s greatest scientists Alan Turing and Lord Waheed Alli tells the story of the Houses of Parliament’s recent battle for gay rights.

Raised by Queers
Kieron Richardson (Hollyoaks) will be exploring parenting in the LGBTQIA community and speaking to those who have been on this journey. The one-off (30 mins) documentary will release exclusively on All 4, Channel 4’s on-demand channel, and will see Kieron meet parents and children with first-hand experience of parenting within the LGBTQIA community, discovering more about the world of surrogacy and modern parenting, the challenges faced, and finding out how rewarding the experience can be.

Out on 4 Collection
All 4 will offer up a celebration of landmark Channel 4 shows including My Beautiful Launderette, Queer as Folk, Metrosexuality, , Terry and Julian featuring Julian Clary, Sugar Rush, Cucumber, Banana and Muslim Drag Queens.

Joel Edgerton & Lucas Hedges Teaming For Gay Conversion Drama, With Russell Crowe & Nicole Kidman Circling

June 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Aussie actor Joel Edgerton has seen plenty of success in the likes of Black Mass and Warrior, but The Rover and Jane Got A Gun show he’s a writer to look out for, and he’s also not bad behind the camera, as he proved in The Gift. Now he’s set his sights on the insidious world of gay conversion therapy, as he’s planning to act, write and direct an adaptation of Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir, Boy Erased.

Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea) is set to take the lead role in the film, according the Deadline, which will recount Garrard’s ‘harrowing time attending Love in Action, an entity that attempts to deprogram LGBT people. The son of a Baptist pastor in a conservative small Arkansas town, Conley was outed to his parents at age 19. Conley was faced with attending a church-supported conversion therapy program that purports to “cure” homosexuality. The alternative was to risk losing his family, friends and his religion.

‘He entered the program, but instead of emerging from the brutal Twelve-Step Program as heterosexual, he left with the strength to embrace his true identity. The drama covers the difficulty of coming of age as a gay person in a conservative community, and the struggles that can occur when one tries to suppress that sexual identity.’

The effects the organisation had on those sent to be ‘converted’ were previously seen in the excellent documentary, ‘This Is What Love in Action Looks Like‘.

Edgerton is set to play the man in charge of the therapy programme, and he’s also talking to Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman to play the role of Garrard’s parents. However, at the moment it doesn’t look like they’re close to signing on.
