Brie Larson Will Be Billie Jean King In Battle of the Sexes Movie

September 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brie-larsonThe battle of the Battle Of The Sexes movies continues with Variety revealing that Brie Larson has replaced Emma Stone in a planned film about the infamous tennis match between the legendary Billie Jean King and misogynist Bobby Riggs.

The film is one of two movies about the event in the works, with HBO planning one starring Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti, while Fox Searchlight is behind the one with Larson as King and Steve Carell as Riggs.

Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the script. Previously Danny Boyle was set to direct, but it now appears he’ll produce with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) helming.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

However Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world, took on the challenge, but lost to Bobby in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims. King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

These aren’t the only Battle Of The Sexes movies in the works either, as Will Ferrell has previously been reported to be working on a comedy version where he’ll play Bobby Riggs. However there hasn’t been any news on that film for some time.

Tom Hardy Responds To His Tetchy Encounter With A Journo Who Asked Him About His ‘Ambiguous’ Sexuality

September 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hardy-legendA few days ago there was a lot of interest in a moment at a Toronto International Film Festival press conference for the movie Legend, where Tom Hardy shut down a journalist from a gay publication who asked him about his ‘ambiguous’ sexuality, seeming rather frustrated at the line of questioning.

While many agreed with how he handled it (and admittedly it was rather smart what he did, whether he should hve done it or not), others were less impressed by what they saw as Tom being far more defensive than he needed to be, especially as one of the characters he plays in Legend is bisexual.

Now Hardy has responded with his take on what happened, telling The Daily Beast, “I think everybody is entitled to the right to privacy. There should be elegant ways to approach any topic, and there’s a time and place to approach anything and have a good, common sense conversation about anything. I do think that there’s a responsibility for people to own the way that they speak publicly. This doesn’t stop us from being human beings; some things are private. I’m under no obligation to share anything to do with my family, my children, my sexuality—that’s nobody’s business but my own. And I don’t see how that can have anything to do with what I do as an actor, and it’s my own business. If you knew me as a friend, then sure, we’d talk about anything. But that was a public forum, and for someone to inelegantly ask a question that seemed designed entirely to provoke a reaction, and start a topic of debate… It’s important destigmatizing sexuality and gender inequality in the workplace, but to put a man on the spot in a room full of people designed purely for a salacious reaction? To be quite frank, it’s rude. If he’d have said that to me in the street, I’d have said the same thing back: ‘I’m sorry, who the fuck are you?’

“What he had to talk about was actually interesting, but how he did it was so inelegant. And I appreciate that I could probably have more grace as a human being, but I’m just a bloke. I’m just a man. And I’m just a man doing a job. I’m not a role model for anyone, and you’re asking me something about my private life in a room full of people. I don’t want to discuss my private life with you. I don’t know you! Why would I share that with a billion people? Also, if you felt it was so important for people to feel confident to talk about their sexuality, why would you put somebody on the spot in a room full of people and decide that was the time for them to open up about their sexual ambiguity? There’s also nothing ambiguous about my sexuality, anyway. I know who I am. But what does that have to do with you? And why am I a part of something now that, however legitimate, I haven’t offered my services for? It’s not about what he and his publication stands for, none of that is offensive, and on the contrary, it’s very admirable, and an important issue. But how I was asked was incredibly inelegant, and I just thought it was disrespectful and counterproductive to what he stands for.”

Tom’s response has also met with differing opinions, with many agreeing that he has a right to his privacy and that there was something rather inelegant about the way the questions were put to him. However many others are less forgiving, seeing the ‘privacy’ argument as falacious, due to the fact it suggests same-sex attraction/experiences are something inherent ‘private’ in a way opposite sex attraction isn’t.

It was undoubtedly an interesting encounter that’s it’s possible to read in several ways, and to be honest neither the journalist (who did ask wooly, leading questions that deliberately avoided what he really wanted to talk about) or Tom (who got more defensive than was really necessary in a way that suggested discomfort about the topic more than how it was asked) covered themselves in glory.

The 70s/80s TV Show Hart To Hart May Be Getting A Major Gay Makeover

September 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hart-to-hartIt appears NBC is thinking about doing something that’s never really been tried before, a crime show led by two gay characters. The US TV network has put a remake of the TV show Hart To Hart into development, according to Deadline, with the ‘twist’ being the fact that this time it revolves around a gay couple.

The original show ran from 1979 to 1984 (followed by a series of TV movies) and revolved around Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers as self-made millionaire Jonathan Hart and his journalist wife Jennifer, who in each episode of their globe-trotting adventures got involved in murders, robberies and other crimes, using their amateur sleuthing skills to find the bad guys.

Carol Mendelsohn (CSI, Melrose Place) will produce the new version, with Christopher Fife writing the pilot script. The series will focus ‘on “by the book” attorney Jonathan Hart and free-spirited investigator Dan Hartman, who must balance the two sides of their life: action-packed crime-solving in the midst of newly found domesticity’.

Although shows with gay leads have a very mixed history on US network TV, several networks showed interest in the new Hart To Hart, to the point where NBC will have to pay major penalty if they don’t put the pilot into production.

It would be great to see the show make it to air, as it may be one of the first major shows with major gay characters where their sexuality isn’t the focus of the series.

Gay-Themed Film From Afar Wins The Venice Film Festival’s Top Prize, The Golden Lion

September 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

desde-alla-from-afarThe Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion award is one of the most prestigious gongs in the movie world, ranked alongside the likes of the Cannes Palm d’Or and Berlin’s Golden Bear. This year’s Golden Lion has now been given out, and the 2015 prize was handed to the gay-themed film, From Afar (aka Desde Allá), from Venezuelan filmmaker Lorenzo Vigas.

The movie follows Armando, a 50-year-old man, who seeks out younger men in Caracas and pays them just for company. One day he meets Elder, a 17-year-old boy who is also the leader of a criminal gang. It begins a slow-blossoming, and potentially dangerous, romance between the two, set against the backdrop of the economic and social crisis that’s rocked Venezuela, and the violence that has stemmed from that.

Vigas commented on the festival stage, “I want to dedicate this prize to my amazing country, Venezuela. I know we have a few problems, but if we talk about them we will overcome them.”

It’s a particularly impressive achievement for Vigas, as this is his first feature-film, and it is also the first time the Golden Lion has gone to a film from Latin America.

Brokeback Mountain Is Headed To The London West End Stage

September 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brokeback-mountainAt the end of last year Brokeback Mountain writer Annie Proulx surprised many when she said of her short story, “I wish I’d never written the story. It’s just been the cause of hassle and problems and irritation since the film came out.”

Her problem was that since the film came out, people haven’t responded to the story the way she would like, as they would prefer if it had a happy ending. “So they rewrite the story, including all kinds of boyfriends and new lovers and so forth after Jack is killed,” she said.” And it just drives me wild. They can’t understand that the story isn’t about Jack and Ennis. It’s about homophobia; it’s about a social situation; it’s about a place and a particular mindset and morality. They just don’t get it… The implication is that because they’re men they understand much better than I how these people would have behaved. And maybe they do. But that’s not the story I wrote. Those are not their characters. The characters belong to me by law.”

However despite her rather crotchety attitude it hasn’t stopped her cashing in, making a mint from the movie, turning Brokeback Mountain into an opera, and now she’s sold the stage rights to producer Tom O’Connell, who intends to turn it into a play due to be staged next year in London’s West End. At the moment, it’s not clear who will write the play (Proulx herself wrote the book for the opera, but it doesn’t appear she’ll be involved in that capacity here).

Playbill prints statement from Annie, saying, “I am looking forward with sharp anticipation to the stage interpretation of the star-crossed lovers of Brokeback Mountain who moved from the page to the screen and now, under the skilled hand of producer Tom O’Connell and the sensibilities of the company, to the stage —a strange journey for two messed-up wannabe cow-hands from Wyoming. The actors who pull on their scuffed-up boots will step into a difficult time in a hard place.”

There’s no specific date given as to when it will hit the London stage, or what theatre it will be at. You can follow the show’s progress at brokebackplay.com. [Read more…]

Tom Hardy Shuts Down Journo Asking Vague Questions About His ‘Ambiguous’ Sexuality

September 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hardy-legendTom Hardy says he doesn’t mind celebrities talking about their sexuality, but if you’re going to ask him about his, you’d better have a damn good question. He showed that in a recent interview where he expertly and rather smartly shut down a journalist asking roundabout questions linking the bisexual character Tom plays in the Kray twins biopic to the star’s own sexuality.

The journalist was fishing around the fact that a few years ago in an interview with Attitude, Hardy talked about the fact he’s previously messed around with guys, saying “I’m an actor for fuck’s sake. I’ve played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I’m in my thirties, it doesn’t do it for me.”

The new, slightly tetchy confrontation happened at the Toronto International Film Festival, when Graeme Coleman from Canadian LGBT-outlet Daily Xtra asked, “In the film, your character Ronnie is very open. But given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”

“What on earth are you on about?” Tom responds – which is fair enough, as he hasn’t exactly hidden his past, unless you think there’s something more he’s hiding.

“I was referring to an interview given to Attitude magazine a few years ago,” Coleman responds.

Tom isn’t having any of it though, saying, “But what is your question?”

A slightly flusters Coleman then says, “I was wondering if you find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality.”

“I don’t find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality,” Hardy answers, before adding “Um, are you asking me about my sexuality?”

“Um…sure,” says Coleman.

“Why?”, Hardy wants know.

Coleman can only come up with an inarticulate, ‘Um’, so Tom says a very final, “Thank you,” and moves things on.

You can take a look at the incident below. [Read more…]
