The Hobbit Beats Out Anchorman 2 At The US Box Office

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-desolation-poster5With a lot of films battling it out at the US box office, it wasn’t clear going into the weekend which would end up on top. In the end The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug took the number one spot, with $31.4 million.

That means it beat out the hotly tipped Anchorman 2, which came second with $26.6 million over the weekend and $40 million since it opened last Wednesday. Although not the mega-hit some had thought it might be, it’s still a pretty okay start and it should continue to have decent play of the Christmas period.

After expanding their screen count massively, both American Hustle and Saving Mr. Banks made their first appearance in the top 10 in fourth and fifth spot, with $19.1 million and $9.3 million respectively. It means that Hustle is playing ahead of expectations, which is likely to help its Oscar chances, while Saving Mr. Banks is probably going to need a few awards nods if it’s going to turn into a significant US hit.

Walking With Dinosaurs failed to attract much of an audience, earning just $7.3 million in its first three days. Although it will continue to play over Christmas, it’s still likely to be seen as a significant failure.

More impressive was Dhoom 3, which may have earned only around half of what Walking With Dinosaurs did, but it did so on less than 10% of the screens the dino movie had. It’s $3.3 million weekend is a record for a Bollywood movie in the US, which very rarely make the top 10.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 20th-22nd 2013.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug $31.4 $127.5
2 Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues $26.7 $40.0
3 Frozen $19.1 $191.5
4 American Hustle $19.1 $20.2
5 Saving Mr. Banks $9.3 $9.9
6 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $8.7 $321.7
7 Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas $8.5 $28.2
8 Walking With Dinosaurs $7.3 $7.3
9 Dhoom 3 $3.3 $3.3
10 Thor: The Dark World $1.3 $200.7

Transcendence Trailer – Johnny Depp gets shot and goes inside a computer

December 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Transcendence always sounded pretty intriguing, but this trailer suggests we could be dealing with something very cool, even if there is a slight whiff of the 1980s around a film about a computer that gets too smart for its own good.

And if it also brings to mind Inception, it’s probably little coincidence this is the directorial debut of that movie’s cinematographer, Wally Pfister.

Here the synopsis: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.’

Transcendence co-stars Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara and Paul Bettany. The film is due out next April. [Read more…]

Helena Bonham Carter Joins Suffragette, Opposite Carey Mulligan

December 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

helena-bonham-carterNowadays women have the right to vote (I hope that doesn’t come as news to you), but it wasn’t always that way, and a film is in the works to take a look at the women who fought to make it happen. Carey Mulligan is already attached to star, and now Variety reports that she’s been joined by Helena Bonham-Carter.

The film, ‘revolves around the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement: women who were forced underground in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State.’ Unfortunately there’s now specific plot details or info on who exactly the actresses will play.

The movie should shoot sometime next year.

Anna Paquin Cut From X-Men: Days of Future Past

December 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anna-paquin-rogueAs X-Men: Days Of Future Past went into production it seemed there were almost too many mutants for one film, with nearly all the original cast as well as their First Class counterparts signed up. Now it seems there simply isn’t time for all of them, as director Bryan Singer has revealed that Anna Paquin’s Rogue has already ended up on the cutting room floor.

Singer told EW  Paquin was due to be part of a rescue sequence that was shot early in the film’s production schedule. It also featured Magneto (Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore).

However, he added, “Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous. It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

He did want to add that the decision had nothing to do with her performance.”She did a fantastic job,” Singer says. “She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.”

He told Paquin the news personally, and .”She completely understood. It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”

The news also confirms that some of the original cast will have little more than cameos, and it’s possible a couple more may not make the final cut. We’ll have to see who ends up in the film when it’s released next May.

Transcendence Teaser Trailers – Johnny Depp gets into computers (literally)

December 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Wally Pfister has learned a lot about keeping things mysterious having worked with Christopher Nolan on most of his movies, so he’s keeping things close to his chest for his directorial debut, Transcendence. Now we have a couple of teaser trailers, and they really are teasers. You can take a look at them below.

Here the synopsis: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. Hugh Jackman May Be Blackbeard In Joe Wright’s Pan

December 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

les-miserables-hugh-jackmanHugh Jackman may be turning pirate as Variety reports that after Javier Bardem passed on the role, Hugh is in talks to play Blackbeard in Pan. Joe Wright is directing the Peter Pan prequel, which is in a bit of a race to the screen against Disney’s Peter and the Starcatchers, based on the ‘official’ Pan prequel novel.

Previously there haven’t been many plot details for Pan, but Variety opens up a little, saying ‘The origin story revolves around an orphan who is taken to the magical world of Neverland where he becomes a hero to the natives and leads a revolt against the evil pirates.

‘The idea is that Blackbeard is the film’s main antagonist while Hook would serve as Pan’s close ally before turning bad. Ryan Gosling was someone the studio had looked at among others for the part.’

The studio is now likely to hold an open casting for the role of Peter, and is also looking for an actress in her 20s to play Tiger Lily. It’s not clear when it might shoot.
